hachiroku Posted April 12, 2017 Posted April 12, 2017 Hi! I think this is one of the most dificult SW vehicles to make in Lego. I had some ideas about it and this is the best result I could get. Some bricks aren't avaible in orange, so I change the colour digitally, but they are in the yellowish-orange, so it's possible to build one: Lego Twin Pod Cloud Car (with instructions) by hachiroku24, en Flickr Lego Twin Pod Cloud Car (with instructions) by hachiroku24, en Flickr Lego Twin Pod Cloud Car (with instructions) by hachiroku24, en Flickr Here is a video with more shots and building it: Quote
Hold0511 Posted April 12, 2017 Posted April 12, 2017 Sweet - I love Cloud Cars, it would so be on my UCS wish list...such a shame there are so few orange bricks. Quote
Ellisss_2 Posted April 12, 2017 Posted April 12, 2017 Great job, the shaping look excellent, I love the central intake! Quote
LOBOT-OMY Posted April 12, 2017 Posted April 12, 2017 JUST Brilliant! Great work and thanks for the vid. Superb ! Quote
JDbricks Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 Saw this on /r/lego today, great work. Cloud cars are such an awkward design, but you captured the shape very well. -JD Quote
BEAVeR Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 I love it! I have been planning/dreamin of building the twin pod cloud car myself, and now you've given me some extra ideas I'll take with me . I fancy how your creation really captures the feel of the vehicles. A lot of MOCs of this vehicle try to replicate the curvature of the original as closely as possible, but because this is only Lego, this can't be perfectly done and they often end up disrupting the flow of the ship. Then you might have a model that represents the shape well, but not the smoothness and the flow of the ship. Yours strikes just the right balance. I especially like the "rim" of the pods (almost reminds me of bumper cars!) With its pleasing shape. Great attention to detail by making this protrude in the back! However, in the front this protrusion is too big since the nose is too slender in my opinion. If you could separate those two wedge slopes by one stud and place a similar curve between them - possibly a bit more to the front to maintain the pointiness of the ship - this might be improved. The way you did the segmentation of the cockpit is great. If you could get the front window to slope, it might even be better, but still this is about the best representation I've seen of it. I just think it's weird you didn't recreate some details that aren't too hard to incorporate, like the little notch on the top of the cockpit, the detail on top of the engine or the laser barrel (I think a clip and a piece like the lipstick could do the trick, if you find something similar in the right color. But that's only what you notice from up close, and it hardly takes away from how attractive this model is. A great feat considering the limited amount of bricks in orznge indeed! I think you could go for red as well and have a model that doesn't need color adjustments, especially because I think the color of the original is somewhere in between. So a great model that wouldn't be out of place in the Lego catalog! Although you'd probzbly have to add some stud shooters here and there Quote
Borex Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 I think/hope that eventually lego will make some better curved bricks to give us a twin pod cloud car set. It's one of my favorite sw ships. The colour, the shapes, the bizarre design (why would it be a good idea to have two seperate cockpits like that?) And of course their pilots. Your moc is a good start. I'm not really convinced on the cockpits and i still find it a bit too blocky, but then again, such a hard ship to recreate in lego bricks. So cheers! Quote
hachiroku Posted April 14, 2017 Author Posted April 14, 2017 Thanks everyone! I'm glad you like this. It was really ugly Quote
LOBOT-OMY Posted April 15, 2017 Posted April 15, 2017 It would be great to get a collective group ideas/LDD topic started where any of us Cloud City fans could all throw in ideas about how to build the ultimate Twin Pod Cloud Car. There have been some very good MOCs on EB over the years but it would be great to combine the best of all those builds into one awesome 'ultimate cloud car. The example here is very good however and all it needs is the thin landing gear underneath each pod, and an angled front windscreen which must be possible? (look at how the glass has been angled on the forthcoming UCS Snowspeeder). Quote

Moppo Posted April 16, 2017 Posted April 16, 2017 Great design! Any idea what the part number is for the arched bits on the middle beam? Quote
