After some playing around in LDD I managed to construct a 3 strand braid . This will be quite sloppy when you would build it in real life, but the excercise was fun. Anyone else having some LEGO braid ideas?

Click the image to download the LXF-file. You can copy-paste the structure and connect it to the already present one.

Nice!!  I like it a lot!  (From the title I was expecting another braiding machine  )

I too would be curious to see how this idea could be developed further...

That's neat. I tried doing braids with flex axles a while back but was not successful Those pesky axles are very difficult to handle/twist/bend/maneuver ...

I've just made it in real life, and of course it works perfectly.  Maybe it would be possible to make a "puzzle ring" along the lines of these:

Edit: I think this could work...  I just tried replacing every third connector along each strand with a #5 - the ones that go "over the top" of another strand.  As I hope, this gives the whole thing a gentle curve.  One could probably continue like that and join it up to form a (large) loop.  Other just adjustments might allow a smaller radius loop...
