AoM, Town: House Phase I

A traditional Northern home, found far north in the Wolf Clan lands, here in the ever growing village of Mid-River under leadership of Clan leader Finn.

The children get used to the icy cold from a young age, until they are ready to become men and true clan members.

While fairly uninspired for Cat B of Challenge V (but nearly a full story-board for Cat C ), I thought why not go back to building for AoM again, as there's still plenty to build, and also a good opportunity to start building for a new village/town. I'll give more information later on but I'm hoping to locate it at the base of the mountain in the North Wolf Clan territory, between the two rivers flowing from the mountain (hence the "imaginative" name, Mid-River ), with a traditional Northern, viking-esk, architecture style.

- Thanks for looking :classic:

Splendid scene and architecture! Great work on all the details from the terrain to the cottage. I especially like the greeble work on the rooftop and the stockpiled wood section. The trees and rock formations are also really nice touches of detail.

Great work all around, really like this one

Nice house, Legofin! It is very appropriately northern. I think it might look better with a differently colored door, though, maybe dark brown or dark green; just something to set it off a bit more from the rest of the house. Your snow looks great, and I echo what others have said about the covered area, as you did it very well. I like what I see.

As a future suggestion, though, since I assume you get lots of snow up in Mid-River, you might want to think about making steeper-sloped roofs the norm in your village, to shed snow more readily; a shallow slope like that will accumulate heavy snow and put considerable stress upon the beams and roofing materials. If you look at old Norse architecture, as well as Alpine architecture, the roofs are usually quite steep for that reason. Just a thought.

Very nice build, I feel like the amount of snow on the roof seems disproportionate to that on the ground, and perhaps adding a few tiles to the roof might look better. Overall, this is an excellent build, looking forward to the others!

Thank you, glad you like it :sweet:

Looks very nice Legofin, great slope to the low roof and I really like the stone foundation you've got!

Thanks, the house I took inspiration from for this was all wood, but that didn't seem very wise with all the snow and possible damp for this build, so stone foundation seemed like a good idea for realism :classic:

Perfect little cabin for the frozen clanlands.  Love the covered area for the firewood.

Thanks, the covered area is what really made me want to build this :classic:

Thank you, maybe a different coloured door would have worked, although I wouldn't of had the parts necessary in the colors you suggested  :sceptic:  And yes, worry not, future Mid-River builds do have steeper roofs planned  When I was researching for Norse/viking architecture, I found this nice little house (what I assume was a reconstruction), and it had a roof like this, and I just thought it would be nice to try in a build

Thank you, I feel like that may mostly be due to me getting carried away with the snow on the ground, as I didn't intend to have as much snow when I built the roof  But hopefully I won't disappoint for future builds

The roof extending over the firewood pile looks fantastic, and gives a nice bit of asymmetry to the layout of the building  The stone foundation is great as well, as are the snowscaping and path.
While a different color door could be nice, I personally think that the plain RB works well here. Overall a fabulous build, looking forward to more like it! :classic:

Really fabulous homestead  I've wanted to do a house myself with a long overhang on one side, similar to this. Now I'm even more motivated
Excellent snow/path combination, and a clever smoke design too

Really cool! I love the asymmetric design to the house and the texture of the wooden planks.  The snow and vegetation on the roof is awesome, and the small little brick build pines are cool, too.  I'm not 100% convinced on the smoke, but I think it's an excellent idea at building it (smoke is probably the most difficult thing I have seen to build with Lego).  I love the attention to detail, too--like the firewood being under a sheltered portico and the slightly recessed paneling between frames of the structure.  I think the minis were well-chosen as well and make the scene lively and believable.  Awesome job!

So your base works fine for greater buildings as well!

I really like the roof, and the low shed is great as weel. Good job

Well I think the biggest it works on is probably 32 studs wide, although I'll have to try it on a large scale build one day when in ready for them kinda builds  And thank you :sweet:

Thank you, the roof was definitely the main focus on this build, as for the door I guess we can just say Clans-people have better things to with their time than painting their doors  Well (hopefully) there should be plenty more coming, although probably after Challenge V is over :sweet:

Thank you, smoke is definitely difficult to build, I some feel like this technique is maybe a bit cartoon-y, but I'm yet to find a better way of doing it, and this scene was very much built just to represent average everyday life in the northern Clan lands :sweet:

I think this is a very inspired build despite your opinion. I like the texture of the cabin and the snowscapping is quite nice.

Well thank you, I'm glad you think so :sweet:
