hollisbrick Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 I saw Hinck's post in the "TLG's stupidest decision?" topic so i thought why not have a bit more positive topic, the title says it all! what are some of the things that TLC have done good for you, some one else or just plain good! *y* Quote
BerndDasBrot Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 (edited) wow. i absolutely concur. although somehow you can think easier of the "worst decisions" than of the good ones... first of all: they made the brick. second: they made 8880 (this was my favortite set from childhood - and I'm more into (old-fashioned) technic) third: they made UCS fourth: factory and LDD is also a good idea. (i only build'n'bought one set from factory but that was a nice experience... ;-) ) positive vibes ON! Edited January 21, 2008 by BerndDasBrot Quote
MatthewUSA Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 I would have to say that overall TLC has made some great items through out the years. I know many of you out there have negative comments towards TLC for the color variations. But remember this the next time you see a questionable color, "Here today, gone tomorrow". TLC has released parts in various colors, and the next year that color is gone. Wouldn't you think this would make that color/part special? That part/color has now become rare & hard to find. That particular color/part is now a collectible item. I would agree with all of you that TLC has released some very questionable sets/themes over the years as well. As for the strange sets/themes, look at them for their parts. TLC may have hidden some special color/new part among those sets. Another thing TLC has done with their sets/themes is the limited quantities. I have always liked how TLC puts a limit on the manufacturing of each set/theme. This is another way that TLC has made their products more of a collectible than a toy. We all have negatives towards TLC for the decisions they have made. But we need to take the changes that TLC has done and roll with them. I could go on with negative feedback towards TLC for many of their decisions through out the years, but they do me no good. Over my years of collecting, I have taken the changes and used them to my advantage. Now I look at strange colors, parts, sets & themes as expansion items. I look at these things and say to myself, "What MOC can I build using this as a foundation". My advice is look at TLC changes as positives. You can always build something from the different colors, parts, sets & themes. Model On!! Quote
Hinckley Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 The first three that come to mind are Giant Trolls, Fabuland and Modular City building. *sweet* *y* Great topic hollis to the brick! Quote
Minifig Lecturer Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 Yes the modular building design is a great innovation. My personal fave thing is Lego Factory and online shopping. Quote
msavageesq Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 The Lego I grew up with was awesome, late 70s and 80s - as a child it gave you the opportunity to let your imagination run wild and create the world as you wanted it to be. It tested you and challenged you, where other toys often served things up ready-made for you. As a townie fan, seeing the return to that kind of stuff again (gradually) alongside all the other licensed themes etc. is wonderful, particularly as I watch my kids pursue it as enthusiastically as I did/do. Particular things that stand out? I suppose creator and the factory facility from the current line. The compromise between out and out 'reality' Playmobil style stuff and the old Lego quirks of single-person vehicles is a nice direction that offers the best of both worlds. Quote
Tohst Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 The thing is, TLC has done so many good things. Thats why everyone here is a fan. I mean, where do you start? 1978 and classic-space. I mean, talk to any engineer of a certain age and you have a good chance this helped them down the road of science and engineering. I know I know, the open endedness of the (lack of) story doesn't focus group well today. But with space exploration being a very real topic of news at the time, this allowed kiddies at home to start their own adventures and dream. 2001 and Bionicle? This is lego? and yet ....the cash probably saved Lego from doing something dumb like selling out to Hasbro. The ball joints allow a lot of flexibility as seen in Exo-Force. Bionicle, even for people who hate Bionicle, has to be considered a good thing. and 200 things in between and even one or two after 2001 like the modular buildings. -Tohst Quote

Cardinal Brick Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 Well as TLC has done so many good things over the years I shall confine myself to just a few. Lego Star Wars Market Place, Caf Quote

Brickmaster Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 Technic supercars, Monorails, Unitron, Making Set 4508 (Best set like ever!) Just to name afew of my favourites of all time :-$ In recent news, I do love the 2007 castle line, and innovative techniques of Mars Mission. All that and given the company as a whole, has allowed me to expand my knowledge, creativity, and made friends from all over the world - that and its just a great hobby to have *sweet* Quote
MrCustomizer Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 The Town Plan, Cafe' Corner, ect. It tided me over until Indiana Jones!!! *y* (pat on Jonny's back) You did good. I know It is a lost cause.. :'-( :'-( :'-( I have doubts about this theme. Goodbye Harry Potter!! :'-( of course Lego invented the :-) face! lol Quote
mutley777 Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 Well star wars was the line that bought me out of a very long dark age so it has to be that for my number 1. The creator line has been such a great line for diversity of sets and loads of great parts :-) . Quote
blueandwhite Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Listened to its fans. How many other companies can say that they have the kind of relationship LEGO does with its fanbase? We have ambassadors, fan-made sets, UCS Star Wars models aimed at older collectors, shop @ home exclusives, sets like the Cafe Corner, Eiffel Tower, VW Bug, and the return of old favorites like castle. LEGO does slip up from time to time, but when compared to its competition nothing else comes within a country mile! Quote
hollisbrick Posted January 22, 2008 Author Posted January 22, 2008 I reckon it's the ability to make what once just was a toy, into something that even adults play today! Quote
Deinonychus Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Just about everything When something inspires enough passion that people spend hours on the Interwebs ranting about how its now being screwed up, well, there's no better indicator of something meaningful. LEGO has given us something we can enjoy doing and, as an extension, enjoy discussing with others who enjoy it. That's success. And, they gave the world the Minifig for crying out loud...that's Nobel Prizeworthy stuff on its own Quote
Batbrick Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 When something inspires enough passion that people spend hours on the Interwebs ranting about how its now being screwed up, well, there's no better indicator of something meaningful. Wow! I think that has got to be the best description I've ever read, it totally sums it all up! :'-) Batbrick Away! >:-) Quote
Brickadier General Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 I would say that, in general, the quality of sets, especially town/city, has increased dramatically in the past five years alone. In that respect, change has been a very good thing. Listening to AFOLs moreso than before is also a plus. The Hobby Train and Modular Town sets are perfect examples of the good that can come out of this partnership. And I look forward to seeing what the Power Functions train sets will look like, especially since Lego is consulting AFOLs. And I also think that to some degree, the licensing has also been a good thing. Star Wars in particular was a smart move. Many people wanted to recreate Star Wars vehicles before the line came out, and several built their own MOCs. When the sets debuted it was like a dream come true for them. For me though, I like the Super Hero deals. I loved Batman as a kid, and it's great to see him in minifig form. Quote

RupeeClock Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Well, the good things TLC has done in 2007 .... are.. letme thinK!!! ... errr .. No i DO know something !! Just let me .... uhmm .. ah Quote
legotrainfan Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 I am pleased to notice that the juniorisation process has finally stopped. The building techniques to create new models have increased again. You can see that there has been immense thought in creating them... as it should be. And the other good things they have done are: Cafe Corner, Market Street, Christmas Train, Santa Fe engine plus waggons, BNSF engine plus container waggon, Hobby Train Set. Well, these are the recent sets for which I worship TLC. But TLC also did something good to me when I was a child. From 1985 to 1995 I found the sets brilliant! Quote
Shadows Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 I'll stick to themes this time around, and maybe add more specifics later. The one that started it all for me: Classic Space. The one that almost prevented my dark ages: Pirates. The one that got me back in: Star Wars. Good topic! *y* Quote
