Specifically part #2736? I am attempting to assemble a battleship tripod mast, and need to anchor the two rear supporting rods... but I'm not all that familiar with technic, and have no 'go-to' knowledge of what I'm looking for to fit these pieces so I can plant the mast.

2736 isn’t a “Technic towball,” it’s a “System towball on a Technic Axle”   As such, it fits newish 14704, 14418, 14419, 63082, 98263, and older 3730, and 3183.

It can also connect between two horizontal clips (such as the clips of 60470), but it’s not recommended as towball connections are vertically centered with the middle of a plate whereas clips are vertically offset (between the middle of  a plate and the top of the plate), so the two parts wouldn’t be “in system.”

The thing to know about those towballs is that it's very old and in the past it was fully frictionless. It's new -female- parts that have been made with friction, meaning that the very old -female- parts are still frictionless, while the very old male parts work with friction in the new system. Lots of other parts have towballs, it's a pretty good system.
