These are my entries for CCV:

on the 11th July 1302 the battle of the Golden Spurs took place near Kortrijk in Flanders. This day is also the Flemish holiday. The Flemish were sick of the French demanding more and more of them and started rebelling against them. The French king was mad and sent a big organised army to those Flemish unorganised farmers.

But the Flemish were smart, and defended the area behind a small river that flood around Kortrijk. The french army consisted of footsoldiers, archers, and a 5000-man knight army. The Flemish forces existed of militia, farmers, some noblemen who remained with the Flemish and laborers. The French first attacked with their footsoldiers and archers, pushing the Flemish forces back. The knights, who wanted their glory, ordered them to pull back, so that they could get their victory. A glorious charge of heavy cavalry took place, but the Flemish stood ready with their long "goedendagen". The cavalry got stuck in the sticky, muddy banks of the river, when the Flemish slaughtered them from above. No single knight was spared.

The golden spurs of the knights were collected, and because so much spurs were collected, the battle was named "the battle of the Gulden Spurs" (de Guldensporenslag). From now on Flanders was independant.
