robinnilsson403 Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 (edited) This is were Aludra is telling about the raid against Poseidons Crest. The events leading up to this can be found here. This is my entry for Challenge 2 B, Strike your colours! "You see, my parents used to live on Poseidons Crest in Le Bellan," Aludra began her story. "But a few years ago the crops failed. They were starving. I had already been sent to Breshaun to study, but I used to get lots of letters from them. One day a letter arrived. They had gotten a chance go with a ship, exploring the new world. It took some time for the next letter to arrive. They had found a nice island, and started a colony and they were happy. The land was fertile and all was well. As a tribute to their old home they named it Poseidons Crest." "But one day... It was in their eight month, something happened. I went there about a year after. I've had no replies to my letters. I found their diary. They wrote down what had happened to them... One day a ship arrived. It didn't fly any colours, so they didn't know what to expect. It turned out it was soldiers from Corrington." "They had been sailing for a long time, and they were running out of supplies. They had guns and a forced themselves into the settlement." "And they took everything... All the food that was left. They even took the pig!" "As I said, I arrived about one year later. The colony had starved to death. Including my parents. That is why I hate the Corries. I'd do anything to make them bleed." Critics and comments are welcome. I have nothing against Corrington, Aludra does. A few more pictures can be found at my Flickr page. Edited March 20, 2016 by robinnilsson403 Quote
Gideon Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 (edited) Filthy redcoats!! In the build, my favorite part is probably the roof Nice try at forced perspective, but I think you've gotten the wrong parts of the picture out of focus (did you do the blurryness digitally in the computer instead of with the camera...?) It is important to the illusion that everything in the foreground is fairly in focus and that the blurryness feels natural. Edited March 20, 2016 by Gideon Quote
Captain Dee Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Interesting story... and those "filthy redcoats" look like some rough and surly characters... Yes, that roof is lovely. And Gideon's pointer on proper focus for forced-perspective is exactly right, as the bluriness in the foreground of the first pic distracts from the overall effect slightly. But it's still a neat little build. Quote
TitusV Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 That background looks pretty sweet! Some more texture on the ground would have added a lot, but I really like it! Quote
Elostirion Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 I've never seen a roof like that before and I love it. Great job! Quote
Kai NRG Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 That roof looks really good! The rest of the scene looks pretty nice as well! Quote
blackdeathgr Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Damn you Corries!!! You let innocent people to die from starvation??? Quote

I don't have a fancy pants camera to work with, so I tried to do it digitally. Perhaps not so smart of me to try it out on a challenge, but what the heck. Probably wont try that technique again for a while. Interesting story... and those "filthy redcoats" look like some rough and surly characters... Yes, that roof is lovely. The idea was that it was someone telling of something they read, and stories like that usually don't have so much detail. I guess it came out wrong. I've never seen a roof like that before and I love it. Great job! Never? I hardly think I can be the first...? Thanks anyhow! That roof looks really good! The rest of the scene looks pretty nice as well! Thanks! Damn you Corries!!! You let innocent people to die from starvation??? Well, their intention was to not starve themselves. Quote
Ayrlego Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 Hmm, those are some nasty looking redcoats... not sure I approve!!! Probably actually Sea Rats dressed as Corries!!! I like your concept of using a flashback for the challenge, it was something I toyed with at first but in the end went for the 'safer' option! Your house, while simple, looks really good - especially the addition of the 1x1 tiles on the roof as others have noted. I also really like the brick built sky and hedge in the background. Great entry! Quote

It's probably easier to achieve a natural look using photo technique than in post production. I can see from the exif data on flickr that you had your camera fairly zoomed out when you took the shot, if you zoom in as much as possible you will get a shorter depth of field to play with Moving the background further back (a gap between them which is obscured by things in the foreground works great) to make it blurrier then works also. Just make sure to nail the focus then on the subject you want to emphasize Edited March 27, 2016 by Gideon Quote
