Lasse D Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 I have tried to build an alternate model of 7991. The model should use parts in new ways and have a lot of functions. After a lot of building, scrapping and rebuilding I can now present the result: Another garbage truck! Inspired by American front loaders, I used exhaust pipes as lift arms and mudguard as a grabber to make the loader The front had to be different from the standard one LEGO puts on all new City trucks and the black plate on top makes it look better shielded from falling debris The rear end has a grabber as well and it can unload (the goggles are supposed to be the exhaust) and I didn't forget to make a lifting mechanism underneath. There is even a drive shaft and some greeble down there The hand truck is mounted on the side instead of on the roof where the minifig can't reach ... while the brush and shovel are on the other side The leftover parts It is fun to play with because the functions actually work. I have also tried to make something out of the cement mixer 7990, but I have not found a way to use the big blue parts yet. Any ideas of how to use them? I have tried to make a rocket car and a helicopter, but they looked terrible! Brickshelf gallery with more pictures Quote
Commander Andrew of 501 st Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 cool front loading action 8- Quote
Section8 Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Wow, that would be an awesome model for the alternate models they put on the back of the box...if the set was anything but a garbage truck already ;-) Looks like you'd easily be able to modify your model to lift larger dumpster-style waste bins. Hotshot Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 (edited) Thats cool *y* Edited November 10, 2007 by Hotshot Quote
zeki Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 i love the way you made the front end of a car! it is impressive! Quote
Lt. Col. Thok Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Very nice! Do you have instructions for it? Quote
Lasse D Posted November 11, 2007 Author Posted November 11, 2007 I have no plans of making instructions for it. There should be enough pictures in the gallery for those who want to make something similar. By the way. Have any of you tried to make an alternate model of 7990? Now that is a real challenge! I'm glad you like the garbage truck, but to make something serious out of 7990 would really be something. Quote
Asuka Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 A very clever idea and a marvelous accomplishment. *y* The use of that mudguard piece Quote
Hewman Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 That's a fantastic effort, I'll have to see if I can replicate it with mine. Quote
jedikermit Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 This is the City set I'm most excited about that I don't already have...I'm resisting it only because I know my two boys will fight me for it. I know the simplest solution would be to buy three of them, but my wife would go all *vader* on me if I did that. Quote
the overseas kiwi Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 Nice models!! Time for a play!!! Quote
john cleese Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 I tried to build an alternate with this set and failed miserably, but I had a very specific design in mind. Still kuds to you! Quote
ExoBuilder Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Wow you made a great alternate for this set! I might just build an alternate of this when I get it. Quote
MatthewUSA Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Really *sweet* alternate model Lasse D *y* . You did a great job modifying this set. Model On!! Quote
adik_sa_lego Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 great alternate! makes me think of getting another one just so they have both a garbage truck and a recycle truck hahaha! Quote
iamded Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 A very cool alternate model! Packed with loads of play features, the front is great, this is really cool! *y* *y* ~Peace Quote
adik_sa_lego Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 just finished trying to replicate this alternate mod. i have way more unused pieces than this. still better looking than the real thing, though it's a bit fragile to play with (trash can doesn't fit in the wheel fender; lifting mechanism sort of unstable). Quote
AzMean Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 nice MOC Lasse. I wanted to make a similar one but had trouble finding the correct pieces for the Front Loader Arm. Looks like you found a creative way of using the exhaust! NICE! :-D Quote

I'm aware of the problem. I usually place a lid upside down on the top which makes it work better. It only the garbage bin was about 2mm wider, then it would fit perfectly. I'm glad you all seem to like it. I would like to do something with 7990 as well, but there is no success with that... yet. Quote
Siegfried Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 This is a really smart and intruging rebuild! :-D I didn't buy this set, but my boy has one that he doesn't use... 8-| Quote
Lasse D Posted November 24, 2007 Author Posted November 24, 2007 Thanks. But I'm not so sure about taking his. There might be toys that kids don't use, but as soon as something is gone, all hell might still break loose! I will suggest to buy another one... or two :-P Quote
