jedikermit Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Here are some SW minifigs I probably made about three or four years ago, I just dug them out of the bottom of the LEGO bucket and thought I'd share here. I'm a big time Sculpey-er and Painter. I know how offensive that is to most of you, but it's how I was raised. I gots problems. In any case, here goes: I really like the Ewoks. It bugs me that we haven't seen any new Ewok sets since Ewok Attack, so I'm glad I stocked up when I did. I added some Sculpey details (feathers, skulls) to some of them, and painted six of them, leaving some all-brown. If you know names, there's a Logray and Chief Chirpa and Teebo and Warok and others there...but I just consider them all my short furry friends. And at least they're not Gungans. If LEGO ever made a Salacioius Crumb, I figure he'd be about this size--I just added Sculpey and paint to a 1X1 round brick, and he looks pretty okay. Medical Droids FX-7 and 2-1B. They're totally ripped off of someone else's Brickshelf design. They're alright. Bounty Hunters Boussh, Bossk, IG-88 and Dengar. I'm not sure why I didn't make Zuckuss and 4-LOM, except that they suck. Assorted Protocol Droids. I don't know what I was doing. Same for the Astromechs. Admiral Ackbar and Nien Nunb--two of my favorite slobbery aliens. If I could convince TLG to make just one alien Minifig, it'd be Admiral Ackbar. How can we avoid traps without him? Quote
Lt. Col. Thok Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Very nice! I like your assorted Ewoks. Quote
SirNadroj Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Personally, I don't like custom things like that, but you changed my mind! *wub* I love all of them, especially the ewoks! *y* Your Ig-88 reminds me of Brickology's from Bricklink: Link: http://www.bricklink.com/store.asp?p=brick...&itemID=8986032 All in all, superb job! *y* Quote
mutley777 Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 I agree with everyone else, some very nice customs but those ewoks are excellent! *y* Quote
zero1312 Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 *wub* Beautiful!!! *wub* I love you for making those!! :-D :-D Quote
Batbrick Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Excellent customs jedikermit! *sweet* While I don't custom things myself I see no problem in other people doing it. The Ewoks are great, and look so much better now, good desicion to leave some generic ones too! ;-) Salacious Crum is so cute, and actually looks pretty good on a head! *y* IG-88 is my favourite though, very simple, effective! Him and Admiral Ackbar! I agree that Ackbar MUST be made, seriously, how many people want him so they can just make him go: "It's a Trap!" :-D Excelent customs! Batbrick Away! >:-) Quote
iamded Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 Nice! I have no problem with people customising Lego (with paint and sculpey etc.), so long as it looks good! You've done a nice job here, especially with the Ewoks! *y* ~Peace Quote
jedikermit Posted November 11, 2007 Author Posted November 11, 2007 Aw, thanks guys! I was expecting more bashing! Yeah, the Ewoks are probably my favorite too; wish we'd see some more of the little furballs at some point. Quote
Hinckley Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 Aw, thanks guys! I was expecting more bashing! Yeah, the Ewoks are probably my favorite too; wish we'd see some more of the little furballs at some point. *throws self in front of speeding hand-painted ABS truck* Noooooo!!!!!!! Not the mini-figs. The licensed ones, too!! Oh the humanity. Why? WHy??!! :'-( :-P I'm not going to bash them. Most members here don't bash things. We are a pretty friendly community. ;-) Onto the minifigs: I do like the ewoks, they are quite good. They remind me of the hasbro figs the way you've painted them. All the other ones make me cringe on the basis of painted ABS. It's hard to judge the paint job when I just am of the personal mindset that they shouldn't be painted. I use waterslide decals myself, so I'm no purist, but the paint makes me sad. I don't want you to regret it ten years from now when those ewoks are going for $45 a pop on Bricklink...If you want to paint them, I suggest using stencils. Not on the ewoks, they look great. But the straight lines and concentric circles on the other figs would be served well with a little more precision. The sculpy pieces are nice. One thing that makes them stand out as non-LEGO parts though is their edges. You should use a sanding blanket. They have them at hobby shops. They're great for getting small surfaces more polished. I think this will make them blend in better. I definitely think this is a great start and I applaud the creativity, but I also encourage you to do some research on some more hobby skills to execute your great creativity more thoroughly and precisely. I hope this didn't come off too harsh. I think you're a great new member and I'm glad you shared this with us and I hope you continue to share your customizations with us, as I'm sure your skills will improve, especially considering these are from several years ago... :-) If I could convince TLG to make just one alien Minifig, it'd be Admiral Ackbar. How can we avoid traps without him? This is my favorite quote of the week! *wub* Quote
Pate-keetongu Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 ewoks are lovely!! *wub* first, (is he logray?) is best. very good! i like nie numb-two, too. but ewoks are best! Quote
Wout Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 the ewoks look great with the different colours. I think TLC maybe can make them, because they also make pieces for 2008 which are soft on one side and hard on the other. :-) Quote

Mmmm...ewok... :-$ Sorry. I guess this is why I shouldn't put whiskey in my cereal... Quote
jedikermit Posted November 11, 2007 Author Posted November 11, 2007 Thanks, guys--and especially, thanks for the tips and constructive criticism, Hinckley; I would definitely do some things different if I were to do these today (as opposed to what I did in 2002-2003 or whenever it was). I can see myself really getting into the decals or other more professional design work someday. This was mostly for my own entertainment, and are done with acrylic paints and a regular Uni-Ball ink pen. My cartooning days moved from paper to three-dimensional stuff. Someday I'll post a link to my 768 customized Fisher Price Little People, and then you'll see what REAL crazy looks like. Anyway. Thanks. MAN, I like this place. *wub* Quote

I'm glad you appreciate the feedback. I do waterslide decals and love to come up with new torsos, unfortunately my printer is not printing correctly, because I would like to start selling them. Either way, you can see some of my better customs here. And yes I assumed when you said three years ago, your skills and interest would've grown by now. So, if you want PM me about new techniques for customizing and stuff. I love seeing all these new custom minifigs around here. It's like the custom mini-fig movement is growing! As far as sculpey and custom pieces go, I think you'll find some good articles on Brickjournal.com and classic-castle.com and I think our sister site Classic-Pirates will soon have some good articles soon, too. At least that is the rumor I hear! :-$ Welcome jedikermit!! I'm glad you like it here. Quote
casewindu Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 Those ewoks are absolutly outstanding especially the one with the little skull on his head! So much more cooler than the official ones! *wub* Your Salacious Crum scares me. His glare is terrifying! 8-| :-D great work! Quote
jedikermit Posted November 11, 2007 Author Posted November 11, 2007 I do have to give total props to LEGO for their Ewok sculpts...there's so much detail in those faces, that they're very easy to paint and simply bring out the detail that LEGO has already built into them. In any case, thanks for the kudos. I loves my Ewoks. Quote
