Logan McOwen Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Okay, so I'm a pretty big fan of the Slizers - They were great, innovative little sets, which were full of character and colour, and they really opened the doors to the world of constraction like nothing else could. But sadly, the little disk-throwing dudes didn't really have much in the way of a backstory. Just what do we know about them and their universe, past their beachball planet and the supposedly mutagenic meteorite? Quote
WARHEAD Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Pretty much everything we know has been covered in the article you posted. Also consider that back then Lego wasn't really making stories for their IPs yet, it was all very loose back then and the actual storymaking was left to the consumer to keep with the traditional company values. Of course Bionicle changed all that like a year or two later but y'know... Quote

Of course Bionicle changed all that like a year or two later but y'know... Not just that, but the story was not unified worldwide and various markets were left to decide the role of the sets themselves. The meteorite may have been mutagenic in the Slizers storyline, but in the Throwbots' case the four new sets in 2000 were actual new characters, rather than mutated forms of the previous ones. Quote
avatarbrickman Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Did they specify who was evil and who was good or was it just everyone fighting everyone? Quote
Dr_Chronos Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 The "good" Slizers were Fire/Torch, Sub/Scuba, City/Turbo, and Ice/Ski. They faced off against the "evil" Slizers who were Judge/Jet, Jungle/Amazon, Rock/Granite, and Energy/Electro. I use quotations because we don't have any actual information on what each side was fighting for. We're not even sure how they fought, some comics show them fighting an open plane while another shows them at the dome playing some kind of disc-throwing game. They were described as gladiator-like figures and that's all we really have to go on. The discs they had showed various scenes. I forgot the relation between the power level and the picture, but I do recall some types. One had each Slizer facing off an environmental enemy, another had them flying in their pod, traveling across their environment, and one had an object that would power them up. The last type is the most mysterious, because Judge's power up had a beam of light launch from the dome implying his motivation was the control of the planet or perhaps unlimited power. Later on the Meoteor hit and the story became more convoluted. Jungle and Judge fused into Blaster as evidenced by his face, but the rest of the new bot's identities is up to theories. We do know that Millennium fought against Blaster in a game not unlike the previous Slizer games, but that comic is not confirmed canon. Quote
Logan McOwen Posted February 12, 2016 Author Posted February 12, 2016 (edited) Very interesting... We do know that Millennium fought against Blaster in a game not unlike the previous Slizer games, but that comic is not confirmed canon. What comic is that? Also, I found some extra little bits and pieces from some old Lego Mania magazines here. EDIT: Check out this May 1999 issue of the UK Lego Technic magazine! Bigger Fish Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 I have never thought I'd see the day where I'd hear a LEGO be described as "creamy". Quote

xboxtravis7992 Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Some of those combined models look UGLY. But that page about alien life with the Sluzer's planet behind it for some reason just yells "Christian Faber did this!!" to me for some reason. It matches his style soooo much; and halfway through reading I almost expected to spot the Great Spirit Robot somewhere. Someone should ask him if that work is his. Quote
MakutaOfWar Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Man, I miss that kind of marketing... Quote
HawkLord Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Wow, great find. Those pics take me back, as I had a couple Throwbots. Agreed that those combined modes look horrible, but the individual bots have some character. Quote

MakutaOfWar Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 What kind of marketing? 90's tacky-ness. Quote
Bigger Fish Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Yeah, that's some good marketing. Also, I really want a BIONICLE storyline that involves them fighting CCBS versions of the Slizers as alien invaders, that'd be cool. Quote
DraikNova Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Or just have Slizers as mysterious, enigmatic and horrifying background characters, to help match their complete lack of clear backstory. Quote

DraikNova Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 What I was thinking was significantly more disturbing than a humanoid dragon with an octopus for a head, but unless you want it pm'd to you, I'm going to try to avoid posting the link. Quote
Bigger Fish Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 I'm not sure I want to see that. But speaking of dragons and Slizers, am I the only one who gets a Megazord type vibe from the combiners? Especially the hero one. Quote

Especially the hero one. It's nothing gross. Just extremely creepy. And yes, while I am only slightly familiar with zords, that's pretty much the look I get from all early constraction combiners, including Wairuha and the like. Quote

Dr_Chronos Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 What comic is that? This is just an uncommon photo comic depicting Blaster and Millennia "fight". It's most likely not canon considering the crowd, but it does hint that Blaster and Millennia were on opposing sides. What I was thinking was significantly more disturbing than a humanoid dragon with an octopus for a head, but unless you want it pm'd to you, I'm going to try to avoid posting the link. I'd like to see it if you don't mind. Quote
geezerman402 Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Oh the nostalgia. I had all of them except Blaster. And despite also reading the Lego magazine, I cannot recall a single story element behind them. Interesting to read what little there is today. Quote
MakutaOfWar Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 That's a pretty interesting picture mentioning RoboRiders. Is there any fiction relation? Dumb question but I've never seen that picture before. Even Bionicle didn't mention HF, and I'm guessing RoboRiders didn't advertise Bionicle. Quote
Bbrink1996 Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 (edited) Wait, Throwbots/Slizers was a different theme than Roboriders? I always thought they were the same because they looked kinda similair. The Outsider Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 I also recall that Slizers lived in separate, single-biome planets in the North American version (including the Judge Planet); which made the whole meteor storyline even more confusing, as they suddenly were in a single planet. And they were Throwbots in the European market. Also, I found the disk gallery. Wait, Throwbots/Slizers was a different theme than Roboriders? I always thought they were the same because they looked kinda similair. I think they reused some pieces, but other than that they were a completely different line, with a completely different story. Slizers were canceled to give way to Roboriders, and Roboriders was canceled immediately afterwards to give way to BIONICLE. Quote
