Matn Posted November 10, 2007 Author Posted November 10, 2007 Indeed, these are very similar so I've merged these threads.Since I liked the title/description of MasterKenobi better, I kept that one for the merged thread. It will not be forever Christmas? :p Okay, you're right. ;-) Quote
Eurobricks Emperor Bonaparte Posted November 10, 2007 Eurobricks Emperor Posted November 10, 2007 It will not be forever Christmas? :pOkay, you're right. ;-) True but since you wrote in your first post: For Christmas and NewYear (yes, it's early) should I ask money? Or:- Marked Street or - Spongebob sets or - Some Castle sets I just can't choose... But I will be happy to change the title for you once X-mas and New Year is over ;-) Quote
Opproperaar Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 (edited) LOL, ok then, just so you know Sinterklaas is based on Nicolaas of Mra from Turkey. So in that case it bears little resemblance to Christmas. I just went on wikipedia to read where people celebrate it. Apparently it's typical to Belgium and the Netherlands. And to a lesser extent it's celebrated in Luxemburg, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France, Poland, Chechya and Slovenia. No other countries Ain't that neat? X-D *y* Gosh I love that old man on his white horse Edited November 10, 2007 by Hairy Ruben Quote
zeki Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Okay guys, it's almost "Sinterklaas" in our country, a cousy and non-relegious version of christmas. non religious? The saint Nicolaus brings the gifts on Sinterklaas... We call it Sveti Miklav Quote
Derek Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 If you are in the US you should ask for the (almost) half price airport at Target on Black Friday. I know im getting it! DP8 Quote

Matn Posted November 11, 2007 Author Posted November 11, 2007 (edited) Here he names Sint-Maarten, it's indeed the religious version of Santa. The story goes that in de Middle Ages there was a man called Maarten that cuts of a half of is cape and give it to a poor man on the street. That night Jezus with some angels on the bedside of Maarten and said that Maarten is the man that helped Jezus out, he has to be a saint. I don't know why we get presents today (Maarten is on the 11th of November) and why are there black people around him?!, but I like it! I think the 'Zwarte Pieten' and that he lives in Spain is from the Netherlands, were Nicolaas is praised. In some locations in the Netherlands they have a Maarten. I got the yellow Heavy Loader (form 2006) from my parents and some money of my grandparents. Edited November 11, 2007 by Matn Quote
Opproperaar Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 I simply thought he was based on that one bisschop from Myra in Lycia, Turkey who was a protector of children keeping them off the streets and preventing them from going into prostitution. But as the matter of fact, Santa Claus was derived from Sinterklaas. Dutch settlers in America kept on celebrating it and of course, people who speak English tend to pronounce words in a different laguage horribly so Sinterklaas became "Santa Claus" So we get two christmasses a year, X-D :-P Quote
CF Mitch Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 (edited) I think Hairy Ruben's story is most correct. That's what my father used to tell me as well. I don't think our family will be celebrating Sinterklaas this year, I don't believe anymore, nor does my li'l sister. So perhaps some family dinner with my grandma, and that's it. But perhaps this will lead to more presents for Christmas >:-) As for a wishlist for Sinterklaas and/or Christmas: I seldom ask for Lego, since no one really knows what I like, and I like a lot of other stuff as well (dvd's, playstation games etc) so I usually ask that, and buy lego myself ;) Edited November 11, 2007 by CF WeaZZel Quote
Wout Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 I think my wallet will help Saint-Nicolas to give me presents this year, but that's not a problem ;-) Actually Saint Nicolas was a religious catholic feast in the Netherlands. When in the 16th century The most of Holland became Protestant, Some orthodox protestants said that people must stop with Saint Nicolas. The idea of giving presents would be going to chistmas. But it doesn't work. People still partied Saint Nicolas and the idea of Giving children presents with christmas passed over on Father Chistmas/ Pere Noel/ Weinachtsman/ Santa Claus , who maybe is based on Saint nicolas but also maybe not. Matn Posted November 11, 2007 Author Posted November 11, 2007 I think Hairy Ruben's story is most correct. That's what my father used to tell me as well. As for Sinterklaas, he is. But my story of Maarten is way different and also correct. I just think that Maarten en Klaas are two different people. So here there are not two the same feasts. :) Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 You've been a bad boy this year rupeeclock! You're not getting anything........... We are taking you on the ship to Spain! :-D No, that garbagetruck and that crane look awesome! Quote
Lord Of Pies Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 Well, I learned much about Sinterklaas by reading this thread!! All the sets are awesome, especially the rubbish lorry. *y* Quote
Wout Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 I forgot to say that for the last 150 years it is not so important more that it is a christian feast. Most people feast it and it is for all people. BTW: Saint- Nicolas (Bram van der Vlugt :-P ) have stated that taking bad children to Spain is old-fashioned and not of this time. *sad* ;-) Quote

Tanotrooper Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 st. maarten? That isn't celebrated here (around Ghent) though... Nicolas was a knight, I only remember the story about his cape, and that he comes from Spain (supposed to be burried they somewhere too) and has the "zwarte pieten" with him as his helpers. (perhaps going back to the days of slavery 8- Quote
Hinckley Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 Wow. Everyone wants to share want they want for Christmas. Yay. I'm merging this one with the one already in existence, although I like the discussion going on about different people's traditions! *sweet* Quote
xwingyoda Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 And this a community topic so I'll move that ;-) And to reply to the question: I'm a tiderian, only money !!! :-P *yoda* Quote

Brainbox Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 New sets!!! Simple.... Well if lego had a good distribution system :-| Well, isn't that what we all want? But seeing as how this is the UK, which is behind on distribution with, frankly, everything, it's never gonna happen. I remember one year when I had to wait till March for the new sets. :-| Quote
ExoBuilder Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 I have a dilemma as well, I could either get the XXL Mobile Crane, Model Town House and Airbender temple or a bunch of small sets, what should I get? Quote
Lt. Col. Thok Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 No help from me, I'm afraid! :-( I can't decide: Three Dwarves Mine and a moderately large Bricklink order, or two castles and an SSA? Quote
ExoBuilder Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 Hmmm, three Dwarves Mines would be really cool if you combined them altogether. Quote
Trudop561 Posted November 30, 2007 Posted November 30, 2007 Because of my budget, I choose to get only #7664 Tie Crawler X-D Quote
Derek Posted November 30, 2007 Posted November 30, 2007 What does it matter if YOU have a low budget? Are you getting yourself an X-mas present? :-D Anyway, I asked for a few City sets i need to catch up on, as well as a couple Castle and SW sets. DP8 Quote
