sbarker300 Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Maybe I'm not wanting to fully commit to what I have seen or not. Maybe I'm hoping Lego is pulling a fast one on everyone. But there are a couple things that may be think that way and I apologize if I have missed the explanation through the numerous forums I have been reading through about the new DS. 1) The price. Why is the DS rumored at $500, when the Disney Castle, which has a higher piece count (less MF's), is priced at 350$ 2) From what I have seen in the past (granted I'm fairly new to collecting), but so far out of all the leaked images, I haven't seen one that show the UCS graphic. I started back up in collecting right after the last DS went away and have been looking for to the new one. I'm probably going to buy it, probably not a Sept 15th purchase IF what is out there is true. But to me, for what was supposed to be a UCS, it seems like a BIG step backwards even compared to the Disney Castle as far as looks. I was kind of thinking/hoping the new DS was going to be some form of the two previous ones molded into one. Quote
Robianco Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 True... I can't see Tatooine Han on the box at all. Also... although it's nice to have the Falcon on there and have some glimmer of hope it's an easter egg it dulls the sensation to also see a Y-Wing, B, Wing, 4 X-Wings and several TIEs on there also albeit less obvious. Brickdoctor Posted August 18, 2016 Author Posted August 18, 2016 All right, let me first say that EB staff made the decision to lock the topic, so before you guys start complaining about TLG trying to censor discussion and keep it all under wraps...that's not the case. This topic was locked because no one was listening to Josh when he told you not to share the leaked pictures. I understand that you have a lot to say about this set and you all want to see pictures, but these are obviously leaks from a non-official source, so let me make this very clear: Do not post them. Do not ask how to find them. Do not in any way use EB to share them or ask for them to be shared with you. Don't try to be clever or try to find loopholes. We don't prohibit discussion and we don't care how well you use Google, but sharing the images is a no-go. We will Chamber members who use EB to share leaked images or repeatedly ask to be shown leaked images. Thank you. Quote

legobagel Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Seeing as I couldn't get the old Death Star, I can't get this, BUT, I actually like how similar it is. I like how the minfigs are in the same spot as a kind of "Throwback" I guess. Still, hyped for this either way. Quote
Alexastor Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Just seen a high-res image. The new Han hair piece looks splendid. Quote
Terrasher Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Having 10188, I'm happy this set looks similar enough to it. If it had been different, I'd probably want to buy it, but it's not, so it's an easy pass. Although, I'm sad because, for me, it's a wasted UCS slot. Quote
Raskolnikov Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 (edited) Seems to me that an unfortunate mismatch between rumors and reality is what caused disappointment. We heard pretty early on that a death star was coming and that it was going to be "bigger." If the rumors from the get-go had been "they're going to release an update to the 10188 because all the figs look super outdated," I doubt it would have caused much of a stir. Anyway, I'm in the boat of not having a 10188, so I'll probably get this one. The outdated figures on the 10188 were a big turn off for me. Now, at least, I'll be paying for a bunch of minifigures that I can use -- including, finally, a gray-uniformed Tarkin. And although adding cheese slopes is a bit of a joke, it seems, I plan to add a ton of them to the set-- give it a bit more of a finished look (might do some other modifications, too). Edit: Noticed a couple nice surprises in the high res image. So the Navy/Death Star Troopers have backprinting, which is new. There also is a black uniformed officer with a black cap, and it looks like he has a rank insignia on his torso. Very excited about that. So it's kind of hard to see, but it looks like this guy: This topic was locked because no one was listening to Josh when he told you not to share the leaked pictures. I understand that you have a lot to say about this set and you all want to see pictures, but these are obviously leaks from a non-official source, so let me make this very clear: Do not post them. This is just a well-intentioned suggestion: But are you guys able to change the titles of posts? The rumors topics all are titled "LEGO Star Wars Pictures and Rumors." To me, that sounds like a place for pictures that are related to rumors. So I'm thinking that maybe a new title would help prevent what seems to be a constantly recurring issue. Something like "LEGO Star Wars Rumors Discussion (Don't post leaked pictures)," perhaps? Edited August 19, 2016 by Raskolnikov Quote
That Orange Thing Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Can't wait for that new princess Leia to arrive in cheaper sets. Looks really good. Quote
Darth Malgus Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 If we have such a good relationship with TLG is there a chance we can have a chat with them to tell them how good a job they have been doing or tell them how much we don't like some of their AFOL pitched sets recently? This year is kind of a big kick in the guts to people who have some of these sets. I was looking forward to a reboot. Good thing you can't plagarise your own creation, lego seems to have done that to SW this year... Quote
Nom Carver Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 I have seen the new images and they don't seem legit to me, I mean that some parts of the box like the SW are missing like if someone slightly modded the original set and replaced the figs with updated ones, or it can be a new merchandising technique by TLG to punch us in the face with something really awsome, I am not eager to buy a DS any time soon but I had hopes to see something interesting and this is just too lazy for our beloved company, far below their standards, or maybe this is the begining of a new dark age for TLG, "The Downfall of the Brick". Ashnflash Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 This should've been either Star Killer Base or it should have been related to Rogue One Quote
ElectroDiva Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 I really don't get the decision making process at TLG. There are classic rare sets that people would love a remake of - UCS Falcon, UCS Imperial Star Destroyer, UCS Tantive IV, UCS Shuttle, Motorised At-At - that get passed over year after year. Any one of these would generate huge sales Instead they waste premium D2C slots on a minor update to a Death Star set that has barely been out of sale for a year and a complete mess of a Hoth play set. Where's the logic in what they're doing? They have shown that they can still produce fantastic premium sets (Ghostbusters HQ, Porsche, Disney Castle) so it isn't a design problem, it's a decision making problem. It's almost as if there is no one there paying any attention to what the Star Wars Lego community want Quote
Ceroknight Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Not great. I expected little, but I still got disappointed Quote
namioik Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Okay. Rehash of the old Death Star. Hype over. Rogue one time!! Quote

As active as the AFOL community is, the target market was, is and always will be children. LEGO will always produce products for children first, adults second, and a lot of AFOLs seem to forget that. analogkid81 Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 What kid gets a $500 playset? A lucky kid! Quote

I don't really buy the argument that sets (particularly at the premium end) have to sacrifice AFOL appeal for kid friendliness You can service both groups with good design - see the GB HQ, Disney Castle, Ewok Village, Temple of Airjitsu or even something like the Haunted House In any case, the main beef people seem to have with this set isn't that it's a play set, it's the fact that it is a lazy re-hash of a set that hasn't been out of circulation for long. There are so many other ways they could have used that premium slot to better effect Quote

We don't always remove pictures. Historically, there have been many cases where official, non-prelim pictures leaked before release, and we weren't asked to take them down. We don't have any sort of set-in-stone rule that says "remove all pictures." Additionally, once the pictures are officially released, they do get posted here and this topic can be used to discuss them. Quote
ChiefPie Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 I think they could have done way better for the Death Star then they did. Can't wait to have the Rogue One sets in hand though! Quote

There are so many other ways they could have used that premium slot to better effect I don't think you can call it a "lazy re-hash." As many people have pointed out, 10188 was extremely popular, as evident by being widely available for 8 years. It's logical that this update is virtually identical to the original. Quote
Jacob_9821 Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 (edited) I have a bit of a guilty pleasure for the Death Star, I wanted it back when it released back in 2008, but I was a kid then and my parent's didn't want to get me the set. Fast forward two years ago and I finally go the set and was amazed by the set. I think what people don't necessarily get is that, LEGO wouldn't be rehashing the Death Star if they knew they would make money on it. Anyway, as far as Death Stars go, this is still a great design. My biggest grip with it is they have the same exact rooms with minor changes. But then again, LEGO did a great job representing every major room of the Death Star back in 2008, so what more could they have added? Darth Vader's meditation chamber perhaps? The new minifigures included are a smart choice for more casual fans, in the next 5 years I'm not sure if we'll have every single figure available in the Death Star available in other sets, so that's a good thing for fans. The only thing that confuses me is that they currently, right now, have a majority of these figures available. The only exclusive ones are the Blue R2 unit, Tarkin, black Imperial officer and possibly Leia (face print?). Part of the reason I bought the old Death Star, even though I still loved the set regardless, was that nearly all the figures were exclusive because they were old and different, almost from a different era. This won't happen with the new Death Star because LEGO has had about the same licensed set head print quality since 2009, and I haven't seen any major changes since then. But that isn't a huge issue as you buy a set for the set, not the minifigures (at least when it's $500!). Ultimately the major issue with the set is the price $100 more for the same set isn't a pill I would be willing to swallow even if I didn't own the set. Edited August 19, 2016 by Jacob_9821 Quote
xboxtravis7992 Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 So I just saw the "leaked Death Star" photos on FBTB. Any bets it's a fake or could it be real? I didn't get the first one so I wouldn't mind a rehash but it does seem very lazy... Quote

I think a lot of you are just in denial that LEGO actually did something this horrible. Quote
