FillyMatty Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 It would be nice if TLG had made some covering on the Death Star, for example, those pieces that Falcon has...but they wouldn't as I can see? And I hope that the DS in the picture above is some kind of 'old display' in a store, not the 75159 set.. 'case that looks shity Quote
Brikkyy13 Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 That set in the window is clearly 10188 with the superlaser dish missing the outer ring of parts Quote
FillyMatty Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 That set in the window is clearly 10188 with the superlaser dish missing the outer ring of parts sounds good and makes smt clear at last Quote
That Orange Thing Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 I think we all need to lower our expectations for this set if that picture is that disappointing. By all accounts they could put the new DS in that window, retake the picture and you would have a really good game of spot the difference. Quote
misterpersonguy Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 I totally get TLG wanting to still sell this "flagship" set but needing to bookend the 8 year old minifigures that no longer match up with their newer sets and current branding. It's like a very popular car model on the lot that's still being sold with a cassette deck. So they retire the set, Make a few minor updates + a mini-fig facelift to match the times and represent the current brand. Then sell it again thousands of times over. I own the old, probably getting the new. Quote
CM4Sci Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Here's a list of what I wrote down and remembered of the differences between the old and "new" Death Star Quote
Bolingbroke Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Lol. Lego is probably phoning this one in, knowing that a lot of people are suckers for minifigures and will buy it anyway if it features a new c3po with printed arms or a luke with a new random freckle. Quote
Forresto Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 I find some of the color changes to be a bit odd. From dark red to bright yellow? Seems rather garish but if it looks good in the end I guess it looks good. Lol. Lego is probably phoning this one in, knowing that a lot of people are suckers for minifigures and will buy it anyway if it features a new c3po with printed arms or a luke with a new random freckle. Must have Hammil accurate freckles man! Quote
darththeling Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 (edited) Isn't it possible that TLG knows exactly what they are doing by re-releasing the same Death Star? 10188 had been available for so many years that it needed a 'fresh coat of paint' before sitting on shelves another 5 years or so. / Inflation, etc of value in 10188 People like the exposed, multi-playset approach (I know I do!) Not everyone can drop that kind of cash all at once. If I were a child or a student, I know I'd be piggy banking for a year or more to turn this around and in the meantime there are many cheaper temptations. This new set will likely be available through 2020-2022 before retirement. I'm shocked at how little attention that post received at the time. Surely a mod like that would be no easy feat, and as far as I know, nobody else has ever really attempted something on that level even to this day. Thanks for the link! Cheers, Nokturn. I think etcknight's efforts to shell his 10188 were most certainly underappreciated. If only we had a better idea of how he made his perimeter attach securely - and strong enough to hold the wedges themselves, which are very clear in construction in the photos posted. Still, I'm going to take a stab at it and I'm glad this thread was able to confirm we aren't getting a shelled DS so I can get to work on it. Edited August 16, 2016 by darththeling Quote
RetroInferno Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 (edited) Gonna be VERY interested in that designer video explainning the new model, as if Hoth wasn't already awkward. Thanks CM4 for that painfull job, photoshopping this must have taken longer than updating the actual model. And I'm all for makeovers when needed, but this is not a new paint coat of the actual model, mini fig wise it is, but certainly not of the new model by the looks of it. Richpepperell Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Here's a list of what I wrote down and remembered of the differences between the old and "new" Death Star Sounds like it's going to be a game of spot-the-difference! I particularly liked the "random cheese slope" - I wonder if that'll get highlighted in the set description? I'll be buying it anyway! Quote
Ceroknight Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 CM4Sci, I respect all the posts you write about future sets, but I'm hesitant to believe the changes are THAT minimal. Quote
That Orange Thing Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 (edited) It does indeed look like a lick of paint at this point. If i were to redesign aspects of the model I'd certainly concentrate on some of the more structural problems rather than cosmetic updates, such as a better central lift system, an updated lift in the hanger as mine was always twisting and not lining up properly and a far more stable laser dish that doesn't fall to pieces by just looking at it. Boromir Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 CM4Sci, I respect all the posts you write about future sets, but I'm hesitant to believe the changes are THAT minimal. Why not? It's not as if they haven't done pretty much exactly the same kind of thing before. Just look at last years WInter Village set. Small updates here and there and a significant price hike from the first Toy Shop. Quote

It is a scary tought indeed, but I don't imagine he would go in lenght about all those small details just for trolling us. Well, at least those little cheese wedges won't feel so alone anymore. bootz Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Jeeze, I feel like one of the people defending Insult on Hoth, but I missed out on the last DS and am eagerly awaiting this one. I'd have bought the last one were it still on sale when I had the money and I'm not bothered at all by this being just an update to that one, though I can certainly see it being underwhelming if you already own the previous model. Quote
Lobot Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 I'll be interested to see the final price point of it. Considering that 10188 was initially released in 2008 and remained at the same price for 8 years, it was genuinely excellent value especially in the last couple of years. £275 for 3,800 parts and 24 minifigures; I can't envisage that any SW set will ever be as good. I'd guess that the new one will be £400 - £425, taking into account inflation and the recent 'premium' pricing strategy. That could be the major sales blocker; such a visible jump in cost from a model that has only just out of production.... Quote
Nokturn Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 (edited) I can certainly see it being underwhelming if you already own the previous model. Oddly enough, I am still struggling to decide whether or not to purchase this, even though I've owned the previous model since 2009. The minifigs alone are enough to tempt me, as I actually don't own any recent versions of a lot of the figures included for some reason. Plus, my 10188 isn't exactly in the best state right now, it's very dusty and a lot of the stickers are already peeling. I know those seem like a silly reasons to buy an entirely new set, but it seems far more convenient in my VERY specific case. I don't think I could bring myself to spend as much money as it would take to Bricklink the changed pieces, get a new sticker sheet, as well as update all of the minifigs. One can surmise that the minifigs from this set are going to be sold at insane prices. I may as well just get the new set rather than trying to restore & update my old one. However, I will say that the Rogue One sets are still very much a priority for me, so I'll be getting all of those first. Edited August 17, 2016 by Nokturn Quote
Cjd223 Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 I mean, you gotta remember, TLG easily can get away with releasing a "new" Death Star for people who are going to see Rogue One advertisement and suddenly want the newly released Lego Death Star. Quote
jee_ace_guy Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 To me it is not odd to believe that there will be minimum changes apart from the updated minifigs For exemple, is there a lot of differences from the last AT AT and the previous version ? And Keep in mind that the death star is the longest availability for a set ;-) Quote
Robianco Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 75105 wasn't hugely different from 7965 but had enough changes to make it feel like it was a new set (besides the obvious dish change). Some nice touches like the new Dejarik table on the interior too. I wasn't sure how much CM4SCI was kidding with his photoshop work but he must have studied it to notice rogue cheese slopes if that's really the case. Quote

Yeah, that's a good point. I'm curious if Rogue One had anything to do with this decision - if not, it's still a good time to capitalize on it. A New Hope never really left the public eye, but I can only imagine the resurgence of popularity that RO will bring. I do honestly wish that a few RO scenes/characters were included in this, especially to replace relatively useless rooms like the Droid repair room. May have been an issue of spoilers though, as we don't know how many scenes will take place actually onboard the Death Star. Could be something really important. HawkLord Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Between RO this year and the anniversary of ANH next year, I bet the timing of the new DS was very purposeful. Quote
FillyMatty Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Waiting for the first photos and reviews, 'case I want to make my own conclusion based on the DS appearance... How soon is it gonna be? Release is on the 15 September..but IMHO TLG should show it a month before, so sooner or later... Quote
