Since I do not appear to have the ability to make a poll quite yet I was wondering:

When you set out to build a set (preferably something with multiple numbered bags) do you assemble them by opening the bags one at a time and build as specified in the instructions?

-or-

Do you dump everything out more than likely doubling or tripling the time it takes for you to make a build?

I personally dump everything out. I like the fact it will take much longer. I don't want the fun and experience to go away!

I just built the X-Wing UCS set (approx. 1600 pieces) and it definitely took me 7 hours+...but it was fun and I was sad when it was over.

I mostly open all bags and put the parts in one bowl, then build from from that.

Depending on the set i might take it slow enjoying the whole of the build.

With some sets i however rush them, if they are just part of a setup or similar.

When making reviews, i do follow the instructions however, opening one bag at a time offcourse.. Nessecary for the pictures.

Also when building with my sisters twins, we only open a bag at a time. They are 5 years old, so its easier that way. :classic:

Try BrickLinking a large set over many months time - and then we'll talk...

Seriously though, waiting weeks between orders, and thus often weeks between building sessions, is some of the most delectable self-torture that there must be.

Nice to hear @KlodsBrik I'll need to check out your reviews. :)

And @notaromantic I thought about BrickLinking the UCS Millennium Falcon but I don't know...I'm heard about the labor of love and other horror stories (as you mentioned). I BrickLink off to the side but simple stuff, few lots. But never a major set...yet.

Hehe ... Never bricklinked any sets. However for the first time im in the process of making a huge build that other bills put a halt to.

Now i wont have the money till february / march .... The wait is driving me crazy

I only have one review up here ive made. And that was from a small set. So not really anything to check out here yet

But with time a lot more will be posted. Its a long process to make fantastic reviews. Still learning . Just recently found out how much fun it is to make em.

Everything gets poured out and sorted into ephemerally categorised pudding trays because I like to part stuff out before building. This probably decaheptuples the time taken for the whole process between busting open the box and 'MIRIN the built thing, but it means I don't have to do some future rummaging through several bins of parts when planning to build a MOC that requires the bits from it.

'scuse the verbosity, this happens when I drink wine.

Like storage and sorting, this topic just keeps coming back. Different title, same topic, same folks give same answers. Here's my same answer.

1. I like numbered bags. It allows me to keep my build organized and build in stages. So I can easily pick up where I leave off.

2. I also sort by type, size and function to help me find be parts as needed.

A side benefit of the sorting is I get to see the parts before I need them so I can try to figure out how it may be used.

All of this increases my enjoyment of the building process.

ahahahaha, you just try technical building and making one motor activate multiple functions in sequence, and then we'll talk. The only time I could see building a set as exquisite self torture is via bricklink. The only thing that even came close for me was the 42043 Mercedes Arocs, with all the pneumatics. Oh, and being forced to stop building in order to go to work is the worst, in a bad way.

You should try a MOC and photo a day project for a year. Now that's masochistic and turn any sorted collection into a disaster.

For building sets, I go by the numbered bags. Opening too many bags at once just gives the cat more opportunity to hijack more parts.

I don't always build the entirety of sets. I decide the sections I intend to have in my display collection and build those bag-by-bag. The rest gets sorted for spare parts.

There is another form of self-torture through LEGO: not opening sets you have. I have the LotR Lonely Mountain set. I've had it for months but am waiting for an extra special occasion to assemble it. I'm dying to get my hands on Smaug!

Once I have a set, I simply must build it. And I do like to use the numbered bags, but with smaller sets I don't see the need because the hunting for the correct piece is part of the fun as well. I just don't like the idea of building a 1000+ piece set with everything dumped out because I would worry about losing parts.

Yup. From start to finish, I took 13 months to order and build 10179. I simply couldn't afford to go faster.

I am a masochist, I dump it all in a pile and then spend hours searching for bits. The only set I haven't done this with is the Death Star, where I dumped each box individually!

I tend to just build while searching through the different bags whether they're numbered or not. I know there's easier ways to do it. The search is kinda fun. I had one seasonal build that was new and sealed but had a couple parts missing and it was frustrating to find that out half way through it, although luckily it was a really small build. (I didn't know about BrickLinking then)

Ooo, same here! My Lonely Mountain is tucked in my closet with about 30 other unopened sets that I've been saving for just the right moment (which really means, when I have a few hours of quiet time to myself to enjoy building.) Hence the backlog of sets I've been waiting to build - working 50 hour work weeks is great for being able to buy Lego, less great for having time to build and MOC.
