Siegfried Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Btw, am I the only one who finds it nicely similar to the desert skiff from SW-episode VI (certainly because of the nose is the same :-$ )? If it makes you feel any better I can see the resemblance; but it is hardly surprising as the skiffs aren't exactly a complicated design. Perhaps this is how they were designed... :-P Quote
Vader Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Went with the first one, it just stood out to me. Quote
szww Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Both entries are at really high level, that's real top-designers-smackdown :) As all, what i wanted to say was already said, I just sum up agreeing with Sinner, that moc #2 looks like GOOD futuristic mecha - but IMO it's not a steampunk :/ Like the name says, steampunk needs steam...in moc#1 usage of steam engine is clear, in moc#2...well i cant see it :-| But that has good points :) both creations were marvelous, and i couldn't decide which is better...so i just voted the one, that is more "stempunk" IMO X-D Quote
Dragonator Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Have to say I am voting for number one. Both Moc's are great, however, the first one is just that bit more superior. I just love how it looks, especially with only 50 pieces! X-O :-D Well done to both contestants though, a great go at it! *y* Quote
Holodoc Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 I voted for number 1. *y* Number 2 dosn't look as steampunk to me. Exactly my opinion. No. 2 is well build as well, but more futuristic. I like it, but not for steampunk. I do have an idea what building is from whom... *sweet* Quote
xwingyoda Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 I like these topics, they are fun to read !! Definitly NOT a fan of steampunk, thats probably why I really am not a fan of either entries but I still prefer the first one which has a Jules Verne adventurer feel to it ;-) And since I'm not a fan (and far from it) of mecha and mixing old with new colours I am not a fan of the second MOC ;-) So may the more liked entry win !! *yoda* Quote
Eurobricks Emperor Bonaparte Posted October 10, 2007 Eurobricks Emperor Posted October 10, 2007 It was a close call, but my vote went to.... #1. Quote
Starwars4J Posted October 10, 2007 Author Posted October 10, 2007 This definition of steampunk might help make it clearer what the genre is about, since it seems a lot of people can get confused :-P Often times this: Steampunk is a subgenre of fantasy and speculative fiction which came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used Quote
Asuka Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Thank you, Starwars4J. *y* Retro-futurism.... oh, I love how that sounds.... *wub* :-P Quote
gylman Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 http://www.scifimoviepage.com/art_steamboy.html Steamboy. Probably the most stereotypical steampunk movie. Highly recmmended. Quote
Asuka Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Highly recmmended. Aahh.... a movie by Katsuhiro Quote
Batbrick Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 I voted for #1, for me it just has a blatant steampunk feel, not to say I don't like #2, which is also very good. *y* When do we find out who did what MOC? I don't know a lot about steampunk like some here, but I am a fan of it! ;-) TTFN! >:-) Quote
alex54 Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 ...but I still prefer the first one which has a Jules Verne adventurer feel to it ;-) Exactly! I like this feeling! It's like we can fly through the clouds, exploring some new words... Entry #2 is well done too, but I'm not a big fan of that kind of mechaknight so... Quote
Shadows Posted October 12, 2007 Posted October 12, 2007 For fans of Retro-futurism, I'd suggest playing Beneath a Steel Sky, a previously commercial game that the developer has released into the public domain. It's incredibly good, both in the genre and as a straightforward graphic adventure with quirky jokes and situations. The game and ScummVM interpreter necessary to run it are available here. A few of the jokes are slightly adult in nature, but it's tame compared to most of what is out there and despite reviews to the contrary, I like it's slightly comical tone which I think provides a contrast to the deadly serious nature of the situation, similar to the classics of the 80's like Space Quest. This commercial has been brought to you by the letter B for babble *wacko* Quote
El Bucanero Posted October 12, 2007 Posted October 12, 2007 Voted for #1. I don't know alot from steampunk, but I think the colours make it look more steampunk. The second one is also very nice, I wouldn't be able to build that. But it looks more like a man in robot suit to me. A bit to modern. Both are very cool, especially for MOCs with only 50 pieces! Smackdown on! And may the best smacker win.. Quote
Norro Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 Late addition to the votes ;-) God Bless, Nathan Quote
Stauder Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 (edited) Hinckley without the 39 gets my vote.... ;-) But, meesa like both of em. Can we have the instructions to the exo suit thing? :-) Stauder Edited October 14, 2007 by Stauder@55 Quote
optimus-convoy Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 Gotta go with the mysterious flying vessel. It just radiates steampunk to me, also nice use of the rock raider cages. *y* Quote
Hinckley Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 The time has come to reveal our secret identities... :-P MOC 1 is mine and MOC 2 is jipay's. Thanks to everyone who voted and made this a super fun competition! X-D jipay-Great job, buddy! I look forward to pissing you off again so we can have another fight! You are certainly a worthy competitor. I will have a new avatar and title ready for you soon >:-) Quote

An excellent example of steampunk on your very first try! *y* Can't wait to see the results of your impending evil creativity >:-) Seriously though, if it's any consolation, it was a very nice moc Jipay, it just didn't scream steampunk like Hinckley's. I'd demand a rematch sometime ;-) Quote
Batbrick Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Wow! I thought the second one was Hinckley's! X-O :-$ They are both very good though, well done to both of you! TTFN! >:-) Quote
Siegfried Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Wow! I thought the second one was Hinckley's! X-O :-$ Any reason why? Quote
