Richard Dower Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 I have had my eye on 7632 for some time, because it looks awesome + imo it could easily pass for a Technic sets, so i picked put a few sets from City that i think could be very cool to build a collect, i am in the process of collecting the parts to build 7632 as i think it looks the coolest....what do you think? 7249: http://brickset.com/...XL-Mobile-Crane 7344: http://brickset.com/...44-1/Dump-Truck 7632: http://brickset.com/...1/Crawler-Crane 7685: http://brickset.com/sets/7685-1/Dozer Quote
A Gallifreyan Cat Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 I think the reason these don't pass as Technic is that they have no functionality. If they had more mechanical functions, they would pass for technic. Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 None of those sets you have posted would count in my book ,as the others have said they miss the mechanical functions and the technic parts. Quote
zux Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 These would be more close to Creator sets that use some Technic pieces. Quote
Karle Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 They may not be "true Technic", but they are good looking Lego models. The challenge would be to add power functions to them. Quote
Kristof Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 I'm missing the point of this thread. No matter how well designed, these sets clearly belong to lego City line, fitting there with every aspect (parts selection, ease of build, minifig playsets). The very fact that these are all construction machines doesn't imply it has anything to do with Technic... There are more Technic elements in some Ninjago sets :P Anyway, this section isn't propper place for discussing such sets, at least I think so. Quote
D3K Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 Using a couple of Technic bricks, pins and axles doesn't make it Technic. I wouldn't call them Creator either.. IMO all these are pretty far from Technic, yet some of them are probably a little bit more advanced than most other City sets. Another good example of sets like these is the 7905 Tower Crane I do however like 7632, and would like to own that set Quote
GoldVillage Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 If above sets could count as "almost technic" (pretty far away imo..) then this would too; Quote
Vorkosigan Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Some of the suggested sets (the cranes particularly) do have "functions" as well as using some technic parts. I can see where Richard is coming from. Quote
neonic Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 IMO it's not realy 'Technic'. But must say that those 'technic' parts looks good. It looks like bit of of a 'bridge' between City and Technic. (maybe a little bridge....) Quote
dr_spock Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 They are not Technic, they do contain some Technic pieces but the majority of the structure and build is not Technic parts. 7632 might fit as an old stud build if it had more Technic bricks in the cabin and body. The inclusion of minifigs also puts it outside of what is traditional Technic versus system build. You'll find many other themes now use Technic pieces for stronger connections, structures, motion, function, etc. Those themes are not Technic either. Quote
Jim Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 It looks like bit of of a 'bridge' between City and Technic. (maybe a little bridge....) Which is called Creator (not completely, I know) If above sets could count as "almost technic" (pretty far away imo..) then this would too; I don't see your point. The sets mentioned use quite a few Technic pieces and have (limited) functionality. I think the OP posed a valid question. Some of the suggested sets (the cranes particularly) do have "functions" as well as using some technic parts. I can see where Richard is coming from. Exactly. Quote
GoldVillage Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 (edited) I don't see your point. The sets mentioned use quite a few Technic pieces and have (limited) functionality. I think the OP posed a valid question. No they dont have any mechanical functions (i.e rotating knobs, lever, etc) and the set i posted dont either, but it includes some technic pieces Edited November 9, 2015 by GoldVillage Quote
zux Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Following your logic, any set containing basic brick or plate is City/Town/Creator set. Quote
Kristof Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Agreed with GoldVillage (and his a bit sarcastic yet valid remark). I'm surprised how many people actually accept the idea that those sets could be possibly called Technic... I don't see one single reason why. For me these are conclusively typical examples Lego City construction site sets. Using several technic pieces here and there is rather common in most System sets nowdays, still nobody comes to claim that i.e. some SW sets should belong to Technic product line. Therefore I think that this whole thread is a bit weird and out of place and that it should have been moved into Lego Town forum in the first place. Otherwise it means that you can start threads about whichever set saying 'Hey, this set is so cool it could almost belong into Technic don't you think?' Quote
dr_spock Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 CITY vs TECHNIC crawler crane comparison. Can we spot the differences? Quote
RohanBeckett Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 that's easy.. one is yellow, and cheap ...the other is red, and VASTLY overpriced on the second hand market... Quote
GoldVillage Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 That yellow city crane does actually has some kinda functionality (a winch) but so has the 6080 king's castle for example... so where do we draw the line? Quote
allanp Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 (edited) Pretty much every Lego set sold on the shelves today have a couple Technic parts thrown in which allows for strength or movement of something. I suppose you would consider the nexo knights castle a Technic castle? The city crane is focused mostly on play and slightly on function, which is why city sets are far more likely to come with minifigures so kiddies can act out......crane.....stuff. However the Technic crane is firstly focused on function despite it also having inherent play value. Hence why this crane doesn't have minifigures but it does have more strength and stronger strings and ratchets on the winches and more winches so that it can far better function as a crane. dr_spock Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 I think the operator/driver/pilot cab can be one differentiator. Except for 42033, ever notice that Technic sets lack front windscreen for the driver/operator/pilot? There is no transparent part, just open air. Here is a MOD I did a long time ago. Does it look like it can fit into a CITY layout? Picture 4434 by dr_spock_888, on Flickr that's easy.. one is yellow, and cheap ...the other is red, and VASTLY overpriced on the second hand market... LOL. That's a great answer. Quote
