Hi all, first post here.

I'm wanting to build the 8043 excavator but don't really want to fork out the massive prices used kits are demanding on ebay, so wondering whether anyone can advise on which currently/readily available kits I'd need to buy to have the (the majority of) correct parts for an 8043 Excavator build?

…or whether it'd be more straightforward/less costly to source a parts list and do the rounds buying only the ones required?

Try looking at rebrickable.com. It will tell you exactly what you are looking for.

42009 has 62.5% of the parts you need.

If you add 42024 or 42006 you will be up over 75% of the parts needed.

Hi,

Well, it depends how accurate you want your 8043 to have.

If you wish to have it 100% accurate, I'm afraid, cheapest option would be to buy set itself. Otherwise you would need to hunt for 3 pieces of 8109 set, just to get those rare #5 and #6 yellow panels (and some other parts as well).

Another option would be to build it white as these parts are common.

And yes, as mentioned above, try playing with Rebrickable - add some sets and check which pieces you are missing. pieces you still need can be easily obtained on Bricklink.

Depends how much cheaper you're trying to go. If you're patient, there are plenty of good deals for used 8043 sets. Yesterday in Paris, someone put one for sale for 150€ (http://www.leboncoin.fr/jeux_jouets/876546038.htm?ca=2_s) That's cheaper than any one of them on Bricklink. If you buy the PF elements alone, it will quickly become more expensive, especially with multiple parcel shipping costs since those parts are bulky.

I'm presently building Jurgen's Ultimate 8043. It has a few more parts than the standard 8043. An extra XL motor, a third IR receiver, and transmitter, etc. I don't have a very large reserve of unused parts because I keep the finished models. That said I've spent about $550 on parts for the yellow version.

Hi,

agreed....the most expensive parts are the long #5 and #6 panels in yellow....the prices are mental!

try building it in white, very cheap to source the parts.

buy the power functions parts off lego shop....IMO your cheapest bet is to buy 42028....you will get alot of parts from that for just 40 Euro.

if you need the motors and remotes of course get 42030, it will also include many of the parts in correct color.

Edit: Rebrikable says 42030 satisfies 8043 by almost 70%

the most expensive parts are the power functions...after that its the #5 and #6 panels in yellow.

i built the A and B model buy buying all the parts over time, nothing is rare per se...just needs a bit of effort to source and gather all the parts together.

depending on how you do things it might end up costing you 200 Euro.

I suggest building the 8043 in a different colour, unless you like spending crazy money on those yellow #5 and #6 panels:

the prices are MENTAL!.....i made a thread topic about them panel prices. i got mine brand new off an ebay seller in the US. i got the panels for 2 Euro each!!!

:-) .....the seller had no clue as to the value or rarity, he had parted out a few sets of 8043 and 8053 to sell off the parts.

mine came in around 250 Euro once i bought in all the parts, from different ebay sellers, over time, and the separate postage costs for each seller etc.

so if using bricklink it might be done cheaper.

that why i suggest buying direct from the lego shop...they have all the power functions parts and over 55 Euro you get free shipping.

4 medium motors, battery box, 2 IR receivers and 2 remotes.
