Jim Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 When is a crane a crane or a hoist a hoist ? What I'm thinking of is often called either Wikipedia: A hoist is a device used for lifting or lowering a load by means of a drum or lift-wheel around which rope or chain wraps. It may be manually operated, electrically or pneumatically driven and may use chain, fiber or wire rope as its lifting medium. The load is attached to the hoist by means of a lifting hook. Quote
SpaceSoccer Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 I would like to build something that resembles an up-sized version of 8270, would that be appropriate? Quote

Erik Leppen Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 (edited) I'm not so sure about extending the deadline. The deadline is set, and known to everyone. Everyone can make some sort of a guess how much time they have over the coming two months. People should adjust their model and scale to that time frame. You can start building a 1:8 scale LTM1500, but it won't be done in time. So if you want to win, don't build a 1:8 LTM1500. Edited September 10, 2015 by Erik Leppen Quote
Jim Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 That's true. In my experience, the more time people have the later they will start "because they still have enough time" (I for one work best with a little pressure) And by the way....why am I mingling in the discussion....Milan will decide Quote
Seasider Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 So Jim (or Milan) how is a crane different to a hoist ? Quote
Jim Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 So Jim (or Milan) how is a crane different to a hoist ? A hoist is a type of crane (imho). So a hoist is crane, but a crane isn't necessarily a hoist. Why does it matter? Quote
Milan Posted September 10, 2015 Author Posted September 10, 2015 (edited) So Jim (or Milan) how is a crane different to a hoist ? Do you want to build something specific, which was not covered so far? Regarding the deadline, Jim has always left a grace-period of few more days (even if he did not need to), to help thise few more entries get to the finish line. We could discuss this later (a month from now), but please, for now lets stick to the current deadline. Edited September 10, 2015 by Milan Quote
aminnich Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 I for one have been building nonstop (after all my college work is done) because I'm worried I won't make the deadline in time Quote
Jim Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 I for one have been building nonstop (after all my college work is done) because I'm worried I won't make the deadline in time That's the spirit! Looking forward to your entry Quote
Epic Technic Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 Just want to check, in a container crane, it has a grab attachment to attach to the containers. This is allowed right because it's main purpose is hoisting. Quote
aminnich Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 That's the spirit! Looking forward to your entry Thanks Jim, this will b my first contest entry! I hope everyone likes it Quote
Milan Posted September 10, 2015 Author Posted September 10, 2015 Just want to check, in a container crane, it has a grab attachment to attach to the containers. This is allowed right because it's main purpose is hoisting. Yes, it is allowed. Quote
Epic Technic Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 Yes, it is allowed. Ok thanks, Quote
Thirdwigg Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 I vote for keeping the deadline as originally stated. Build smaller people. Quote
Epic Technic Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 What happened to the pro beginner categories from TC7 ? Quote
Kiwi_Builder Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 (edited) +1 Because it means that those people like me who don't have as much experience/parts as the people with pro tags can have a chance at doing well (Just look at ZBLJ's progress so far ). It makes the contest seem more doable and will cause more people to enter the competition. Another factor when people vote is the fact that I can imagine some people's votes will be persuaded by if the entry is made by a well known and popular builder. Milan Posted September 10, 2015 Author Posted September 10, 2015 (edited) Two updates of the main Information post, please follow them when and if you create your WIP topics: WIP topics may be created 2 weeks after the beginning of the contest WIP topics should contain actual plan or progress presented, and should not be used as a "Idea reservation" Edited September 10, 2015 by Milan Quote
aminnich Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 My boom is complete..... now just coming up with a way to lift it... It might just break 2 Large LAs in half..... HAHA Quote
Kelkschiz Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 Sooooooooo... Speaking of lifting, cranes and stuff... Perhaps they should rename the Droste effect to the Liebherr effect... Quote
Jim Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 What happened to the pro beginner categories from TC7 ? Currently there are no prizes (yet). So there's no need for two categories. Quote

Thirdwigg Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 Does future or concept crane fit within fantasy crane, and therefore not allowed? Quote
Milan Posted September 11, 2015 Author Posted September 11, 2015 Some freedom is certainly allowed, but as we noted before, try to stay within known types of cranes.. What exactly you have in mind? Quote
