Hobbythom Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 (edited) Having had to pack away my Lego collection because of the birth of my first child I now primarily build using LDD. A great program but you can get carried away easily and build things using rare bricks in non available colours. I decided to challenge myself to build something 'realistic'. By realistic I mean a reasonable number of pieces, a solid construction (no one-stud-connection for heavy constructions) and a minimum usage of parts in a non-available colour. Because I used to build modulars before packing away the collection, I ended up starting a digital one as well. Inspired by the Dr. McScrubs minifigure I decided to start work on a hospital. Now, I wanted to build the kind of old hospital which you find in a lot op European city centres: former houses for the old, the poor and sickbays run mostly by the church. Nowadays I lot of these buildings have fallen in to other uses, but why not build a functional out of LEGO? Update time: Having almost lost all progress due to a corrupt save file if not for a member of the Eurobricks forum I recently had the chance to continue work on the clinic. Although I am not really happy with the part above the gate I focused primarily on the third floor. I am reasonably happy with the smaller windows but not so much with the big one. In terms of interior (which doesn't let itself well for rendering) there is now a pharmacy and reception on the first floor and a psychologists office and staff room on the third floor. Picture time: Feedback appreciated! UPDATE 11/9 Spend some more time. After having build a majestic staircase I realised this messed up the floor plan of the upper floor to much, so I settled for a elevator at the rear of the building. Some more pics: Feedback again greatly appreciated. September 6th After some two hours in LDD, this is what I've come up with. Feedback is greatly appreciated. The next step will be planning the stairs and/or the elevator. Edited October 2, 2015 by Hobbythom Quote
mikes_bricks Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Looks very nice. I tried to build one, but looks very boxy compared to yours. I would recommend an elevator due to limited space. Quote
Hobbythom Posted September 11, 2015 Author Posted September 11, 2015 Thanks, I tried a fitting staircase and indeed it occupied to much space! Quote
sens1992 Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 Great work so far! The elevator would be a great way to get upstairs. Can't wait to see the finished product! Quote
mikes_bricks Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Looking good. I like the progress. Not too sure about the design of the section above the driveway. it doesn't quite match the rest the façade. eagerly awaiting more photos as the building progress's :) Quote
Ron Dayes Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 The entrance is very well made, very original part usage here! Fits right into the modulars! But in general, i find this building to small to serve as a hospital. i would use at least 2 of those baseplates next to each other, and stretch the entrance section over it. That will give you some actual room to place a few more bedrooms and an operating room on both top and bottom floor. Also a reception + hallway with seats on the bottom entry could find place then. Since its LDD, you got the space;) Apart from that, this is really a good looking WIP, would like to see it finished;) Quote
Hobbythom Posted September 17, 2015 Author Posted September 17, 2015 Thanks for the replies. As to making it bigger: my goal is to build something that could (In theory) be a set. This means limiting the size en detailing. In regards to the section above the gate: I am aware of the difference. At first I had the same windows above the drivethrough but this looked odd somehow. Because it is an asymetrical building I figured it could have been a later addition and therefore a slightly different style. Quote

jobiwonkinosi Posted October 4, 2015 Posted October 4, 2015 Oh man, this looks so good! Any chance you'd share the LDD file when you're done? I'd love one of these in my street! Quote
Sir Stig Posted October 4, 2015 Posted October 4, 2015 Looks very promising. Have you tried extensive use of windows for the part above the gate? Making it about level with the rest of the floor with a flat roof. That could emphasize and distinguish the later addition. You could have it as the cafeteria and dayroom/visiting room. I also believe you can make better use of the space. For instance running the corridor along the back would give you a much bigger office than you currently have. Perhaps this could be the examination/surgery room. Given that you want to keep it a size that could be a set, you have to weigh what capacity it should have. Do you plan on having major surgeries you also need a post operative ward. Quote
mikes_bricks Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 Its coming along nicely. I like the fact that if you are not happy with part of it, you want to change it. Complacency is the killer in my city. That and laziness. :p Quote
Hobbythom Posted October 5, 2015 Author Posted October 5, 2015 Thanks for the feedback! I am glad you guys like it. The part above the gate is not yet done. But for now I think I'll let it rest until I've completed the main façade. Hopefully that will put things in perspective and grant me new ideas! Quote
