jensbrix Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Just went out sailing with my family in law, which got me thinking: have any of you ever seen a LEGO Technic sailboat? I thought it could be a pretty cool idea for a future "flagship" set. Lots of oppurtunities for new parts and functions, ie. sails, pulleys, gearboxes switching between different ropes and lines for power function compatibility! What do you think? Quote
paul_delahaye Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 I see a lot of kids losing a lot of expensive power function parts in the middle of a lake and a Big claim against LEGO for them not being waterproof, but for the AFOLs, it's a valid item to add to the wish list thread. Paul Quote
Jay Psi Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 (edited) There's only one example that I can think of, but it's a great example from a fellow Eurobricks member! Here's the video, courtesy of the creator Kelkeschiz. Hopefully he'll see this topic and answer any questions you may have: I don't think Lego would release a motorized sailboat (for obvious reasons), but hopefully with the assortment of hulls a Technic boat isn't too far away. Just like you I think LEGO Technic and sailboats are a solid match. I would love to see a LEGO Ideas set emerge. I tried to enter my MOC on LEGO Ideas but it was rejected because it contains non-LEGO elements: the sails. I have looked at the LEGO inventory but I couldn't find a LEGO part that would work well as a sail. To be honest, for a sailboat to work properly, you need some actual sails made from suited material. I am still working on improving the design and I also have plans for building different kinds of sailboats. It's lovely to see sailing LEGO :): Quote
syclone Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Here is this summer mania again... I searched in youtube Lego boats and none of them used sails like yours...Awesome model! Quote

It would be really cool to see some sort of keelboat MOC that would tilt when in strong wind. I think there's a lot of cool mechanics that are kinda untried in LEGO - I can understand the problems that will occur with water and electronics, but I guess TLG could sort that out at some point :) Quote
Kelkschiz Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 (edited) Thanks. Indeed a keelboat would be very cool :). Monohulls are of course the quintessential sailboat. I primarily chose for a trimaran because I wanted to take it out on a lake and wanted to have a very stable platform. With all the PF-stuff on board, capsizing or taking on water would be a really bad thing. Btw, did you see this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6F1UntzUgJs. It's perhaps a little more like what you are planning to do. Edited July 30, 2015 by Kelkschiz Quote
TheNextLegoDesinger Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 i would like to see this boat in lego its a 4.20, which means its 4m20 long at the waterline link http://www.2dehands.be/boten/zeilboten/open-zeilboten/zeilboot-420-238108371.html Quote
freakwave Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 Wow, I like this trimaran! must be fun to work with it! Quote
aeh5040 Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 The sailboat is amazing! I'd like to see more details... For those who don't like mixing PF with water, another possibility that I've always wanted to try is a land-yacht: Quote

In fact thinking about that, it wouldn't surprise me at all if it turned out that a LEGO land-yacht will beat the speed of any e-motor driven LEGO vehicle given the right design and weather conditions. Thanks - these pictures are very helpful. Quite a masterpiece. Where do you get the sails? I really like that land-yacht idea of yours. In fact thinking about that, it wouldn't surprise me at all if it turned out that a LEGO land-yacht will beat the speed of any e-motor driven LEGO vehicle given the right design and weather conditions. Indeed. I remember reading somewhere that for many years the only way for a human to travel over 100mph was in an ice-yacht. Quote

Well, I bought some suitable material, I am not sure what the English name is, in the Netherlands we call it 'parachute stof'. Then I made a sail-plan and handed the design and the fabric to my mother and after a couple of days of waiting, ~Pooooof~ some sails magically appeared. What would we do without mothers :) Quote

I used to scale it up a bit, and use larger wheels, and with a decent bit of wind.. they'd go pretty fast! I imagine building it with studless these days, would be even lighter and faster... Quote
