NuckElBerg Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 (edited) [K - C04] The Finishing Touches Location: C04, Aeristus Tags: Land Vehicle, Vehicle, Building (the hangar, the judges will once again have to decide if it counts), Kawashita I have actually wanted to build a skeletonized mech since a couple of weeks ago, and now the time has finally come. The mech is somewhere around 830+ pieces, not including background or minifig. Since I got some scolding (hehe) from Bob a couple of weeks ago, I've put a lot of focus on buildability, rigidity and poseability, and I'm fairly certain it would be possible to build the mech and pose it essentially any way you would want IRL. C&C welcome, as always! --//Alpha Level Encrypted Private Log Begin. Date: 2007(38)15. Scramble code: ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... [Encrypted].//-- [Alpha Level Encryption... Checking Security Clearance Level... ... ... Passed.] When exploiting a new and uncharted galaxy, there always seem to be some kind of emergency. One minute you're doing frontier science, developing a teleportation drive never before seen in human history, and the next, The Board insists that you drop everything in order to develop new weapons to fight M.A.N.T.I.S. with on the frontlines. *Sigh*, wouldn't it be better if these kinds of tasks were handed to lower level employees? I mean sure, I guess I'm kind of in their debt since they gave my quite a promotion despite The Heart of Awsomnium being destroyed, but in the end, it's just a title and some extra credits (which in the end go back to Kawashita, I mean, who else would I buy things from?)... No matter what, it's always quite nice to finish up a "little" project. Sometimes you just want to jump in there with a screwdriver and put in those finishing touches yourself. In the end I must say I'm fairly satisfied with the VBHAR (Very Big Heavily Armed Robot) - 207. With its standard loadout, consisting of a heavy duty arm, and a combined gatling laser and missile launcher, it can quite easily destroy most types of enemy craft. Thanks to its high mobility, including a newly developed anti-gravity ring (Note to self: we should seek to replace this with teleportation technology as soon as possible), it should also be able to avoid most incoming damage. Right now, it just needs some custom plating and then it should be ready to go. --//Alpha Level Encrypted Private Log End. Signature: Lt. Gen. Q. Scramble code: ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... [Encrypted].//-- More pictures and comments under the Spoiler-button! Unrendered screenshot of the VBHAR-207 in firing stance. The cannon. For it to be able to fully rotate, the missiles on the back have to be moved. There is however, lots of room for them around the hips. The cockpit. The cockpit opened. The (non-cannon) arm. One of the feet. They actually bend quite a lot like real feet. A leg. The back (including missiles). The anti-gravity ring hinders some of the movement of the head and might be replaced in later versions. Edited July 20, 2015 by NuckElBerg Quote
Big Sal Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Man, I don't know how you have the patience to build these huge, dynamic builds in LDD. Even making a small model drives me crazy, especially when you have to start using the hinge tool. So kudos on another awesome build! Quote
Commander Turtle Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Nice mech! I'm always a fan of bionicle/hero factory parts being used inventively, here it makes a good technical build. And Sal's right, the hinge tool is annoying enough on 2D hinges, don't know how you have the patience for this! I also enjoy the irony of calling it "The Finishing Touches", as the final build of the week. Quote
robuko Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 That's a very impressive build and render. I like the way you have made the knees especially. Great stuff! Quote
pombe Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 WHAT THE #$%$@%@? WHAT? MY BRAIN CANNOT COMPREHEND THIS MUCH AWESOME! Quote
Commander Beltar Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Great build again NuckElBerg! I'm always surprised at what you can accomplish in LDD, "One minute you're doing frontier science, developing a teleportation drive never before seen in human history, and the next, The Board insists that you drop everything in order to develop new weapons to fight M.A.N.T.I.S. with on the frontlines." I love that line. Great story too! That mech looks like some it can pack a real big punch...! ~Beltar Quote
NuckElBerg Posted July 21, 2015 Author Posted July 21, 2015 Man, I don't know how you have the patience to build these huge, dynamic builds in LDD. Even making a small model drives me crazy, especially when you have to start using the hinge tool. So kudos on another awesome build! Thanks man! I guess as you do more and more builds, you start learning how to get around the limitations of LDD and really utilize its advantages. Still, some parts remain very time-consuming, such as working with hinges. For example, ball joints do not stay in place when you move other hinges connected to them, so you have to disconnect all parts connected to the hinge you want to move, adjust it, and then reconnect them again (for example when bending the knees in this build). Then you have to redo that a couple of times until you get it right, and then do that for each hinge, so yea, it does require some patience, but it's mostly just knowing what the limitations are so that you don't f*ck things up unknowingly. Also, I generally do my builds in one long session, usually somewhere around 10-14 hours long (this was around 14h I think), and after a while, you just get into a certain flow and stop thinking so much about time consumption. It's more "okay, now I've done this, next I'll do that", and so forth (this probably has a little to do with my ADHD as well; one (to many unknown) symptom is that when you really get into something, you have a very hard time stop doing that). Nice mech! Thanks Turtle! I've never used these kinds of parts before to be honest, so it was quite a thrill for me as well! Some parts of it (connecting odd angles, etc) really s*cked in LDD, but overall it wasn't that bad. As for the patience, well, my reply to Sal pretty much answers it, I would say. Haha, didn't think of that actually, but yea! That's a very impressive build and render. I like the way you have made the knees especially. Great stuff! Thanks robuku! Great build as usual! Thanks Umbra! WHAT THE #$%$@%@? WHAT? MY BRAIN CANNOT COMPREHEND THIS MUCH AWESOME! Hahaha, thanks pombe! Great build again NuckElBerg! ~Beltar Thanks Beltar! I try my best! It feels a bit odd, thinking that I only started with LDD a couple of months ago for the first week of AG, and that the only builds I've actually done are for AG. I still have a long way to go however, so I continue to try improving (and one day, I might be as good as, for example, Bob!). Haha, well, it was meant to be funny, but maybe not that funny! Yea, as soon as it gets some real armor! And who knows, one day it might. Just....wow.. Quote
Blackhawk STX Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 That... Is... AWESOME! No, really... I love mecha, and this one totally rocks! With just a few modifications, you could have a superb Gundam. Actually, I take that back. Go for the gold and do a LED Mirage or the Knight of Gold from Five Star Stories. Now THAT would be unspeakably cool... Quote
aeralure Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 Fantastic mecha NuckElBerg! Looks near infinitely poseable and such a huge scale! LDD definitely makes hinge work challenging - I'll second that - but you made it look easy. Quote
Mike S Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Wow! That thing is huge! Nice build! I especially like how you built the feet! Quote
