jonwil Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Does anyone know of a mod (with instructions or really good photos) for the Lone Ranger train that shows how to add connecting rods to the Lone Ranger train? Or alternatively another similar 4-6-0 US pattern locomotive that has connecting rods (and that has instructions available? Quote
lostdriveway Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 There are 2 sets of instructions on the Railbricks website that are for modding the Lone Ranger train. Haven't done it yet myself but its on my to do list. http://railbricks.com/instructions/ Quote
jonwil Posted June 30, 2015 Author Posted June 30, 2015 Those require non-LEGO pieces. I want to keep this particular project purist :) Quote
JopieK Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 @jonwil, but those our by our fellow EB-er Zephyr. Sometimes LEGO does not have what the community wants. Sometimes LEGO then realises that it is indeed a good idea and produces it themselves. We have seen that before of course (BBB-wheels, different animals, etc). Quote
jonwil Posted June 30, 2015 Author Posted June 30, 2015 Also and more to the point though, I wouldn't be able to get the parts in question in time for when I need them :) Quote
Murdoch17 Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Also and more to the point though, I wouldn't be able to get the parts in question in time for when I need them :) You can always replace them, I believe the rods in question can be replaced with the proper length of Technic liftarms. Just look in the back of his instructions for details. Quote
Gideon8 Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 (edited) It is unbelievable how few resources there are for your topic. I too have searched for long time and changed my Constitution Train's connective rods' structure many time with disappointments. I too want to keep the locomotive as original as possible. Finally I found an idea I absolutely love, which comes from msbbanl of YouTube. My structure requires some tuning of the two technic liftarm: 41677 at the end of the black "wand" piece to ensure that the moving piece does not get stuck against the wheel. It is not hard to tune those technic pieces. I am happy as long I can maintain most of the original build. PS. I also use a long frictionless technic pin 32556 for the middle wheels. Murdoch17 Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 If we are comparing methods of modifying the basic model, here is my version, based off Zephyer1934's method with a Tony Sava-inspired tender attached. LDD file for those who are interested: http://www.mocpages.com/user_images/80135/1433889432m.lxf As for running: no aftermarket parts or cutting required. She is one of my best engines, and hasn't had a problem with any official track from either the 9V / RC era, or 12V / 4.5. era. It is possible to motorize the engine with a 9V motor by replacing the two tender bogies with the motor fixed in place and two pony trucks on either side. Power Function would require a car loaded with battery box / receiver, and the motor being part of the tender / being pushed by said battery car with motor being installed there. I hope this helps: I'll put together an LDD file if anyone wants a motorized version as described above. Quote
Hrw-Amen Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 You can look at the pictures in my flickr album. I have added rods using only LEGO parts. Link:- Quote
jonwil Posted June 30, 2015 Author Posted June 30, 2015 Thanks for all the information guys, I think I should be able to come up with what I want now (a 4-6-0 patterned after the one in Back To The Future 3) Quote
zephyr1934 Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Looks like my job in this town is done, now to mosey off into the sunset... in all seriousness though, yes, as Murdoch17 noted, you can easily replace the custom rods in my Lone Ranger mod to use regular technic beams. The one thing though about that mod is that it turns the engine into a 2-6-0. Quote
jonwil Posted July 1, 2015 Author Posted July 1, 2015 Yeah I need a 4-6-0 not a 2-6-0 :) I have some good ideas though now :) Quote
