AOW Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 (edited) Dear all, As the faerie tale used to quote: “…Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the Ugliest of them all ...” Which from the official Lego Technic sets do you consider to be the ugliest? Please provide your feedback for both Model A and B as well. I am quite interested in this – we could separate them in to two categories: Studded and Studless Edited June 13, 2015 by Jim Changed font back to default Quote
RohanBeckett Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 (edited) Interesting question There have been other topics relating to lousy design and mechanics of various sets.. ..but ugly? Well.. not counting Universal sets, as some of those models were pretty weird... but for regular sets, I'd say: 8417 Mag Wheel Master is the ugliest Technic motorcycle... 8253 Fire Helicopter is pretty bad 8434 is one of my least favourite sets, but it's B model is one of the few I've never build.. I flicked through the instructions, and thought 'this is bad, and with zero functionality' When you can't even beat Technic's first 2 choppers (852 and 8844) 25 years later.... To be honest, I've skimmed through the last 10 years' technic models on brickset, and can't really see any majorly ugly models.. most of the recent ones are really quite good RB Edited June 12, 2015 by RohanBeckett Quote
allanp Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Yup. What DrJB said. For the studless era I'de go with 42029 pick up truck. Quote
Rishab N Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 I'm going to look only at modern sets which is kinda hard as everything is so streamlined with panels and stickers now, but I'd say the worst looks IMO is 8436. Very unrealistic design too Quote
Jay Psi Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 (edited) No (lack of) love for 42039? I get that it's supposed to be a mix of modern LMPs, which themselves are not known for being pillars of aesthetic design, but even by those standards 42039 is ugly (it is a very odd mix of Toyota TS030/40 at the front and older closed-top LMPs such as the Bentley EXP Speed 8 at the back), which makes it my contender for the least attractive set! Let's not forget that the set could have been much better looking as well ... Edited June 12, 2015 by Jay Psi Quote
Phoxtane Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Ugliest of them all? ... It has got to be 8277 That robot seems familiar. Quote
sm1995 Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 For me, it has to be the 8070. It may not be the ugliest all time, but compared to it's predecessors ( 8653, 8145 and 8448) it was major step back in design. That awful front end, exposed battery box and the hideous spoiler( if you can even call it that) completely ruin it for me. Quote
Rijkvv Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 (edited) @Jay Psi: I don't like that one either. I think LMP cars are ugly, especially compared to Group C cars (those were the days). But even then: I think Nico71 for example has designed a far better looking LMP. As for the 8070, well, since it's called a supercar I would say one of it's predecessors is 8880 and you can't convince me there's a car that looks as good as or better than 8880. I'd rather see 8070 with a working gearbox to switch gears instead of electric functions, but even then when I see this^ picture, well, hideous indeed. While I prefer studded sets and still can't get used to studless sets, I would actually nominate a studded set: Edited June 12, 2015 by Richie Quote
Blakbird Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 While I prefer studded sets and still can't get used to studless sets, I would actually nominate a studded set: You beat me to it. I was also going to list 8244. Quote
MaxSupercars Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 (edited) I like 8070 Supercar! It isn't ugly... No way! MaxSupercars Edited June 12, 2015 by MaxSupercars Quote
Legocity2713 Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Ugliest of them all? ... It has got to be 8277 Wow yeah, thats gross. Very incomplete looking. That takes the cake for me. Quote
Erik Leppen Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 (edited) Really? I liked that set. Sure it's crude, but it had a certain no-nonsense purity to it, IMO. Anyhhow. There can of course only be one clear winner. I mean... really? Some honorable mentions: 8419? 8248? 8454? 8255? 8830? And the color scheme of 42024: Edited June 12, 2015 by Erik Leppen Quote
mahjqa Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Really? I liked that set. Sure it's crude, but it had a certain no-nonsense purity to it, IMO. I'll grant you that it's all very subjective. For example, two or three of the vehicles you've posted have that charm for me that I just don't see in the 8865. And there are tons of reasons why the 8865 looks the way it does. Cost being a big one. The eighties being another. Doesn't stop it from looking awkward, unfinished, and pretty much unlike any real car I've ever seen. Quote
dr_spock Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I didn't think the 8070 looked that bad. The rear seemed an after thought to accomodate Power Functions. Nothing a little "plastic surgery" can't fix. Maybe we could have a topic or contest on the ugliest thing we MOCed and dare to share. Quote
allanp Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 (edited) No, because I'de win! Edited June 13, 2015 by allanp Quote
Lipko Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 8865 is beautiful, still my favourite official supercar set. Sure, the protruding wheels made it totally unproportional, but somehow I still see it as the "sexiest". Quote
AOW Posted June 13, 2015 Author Posted June 13, 2015 (edited) Ugliest of them all? ... It has got to be 8277 No, because I'de win! B Modell 42000 In the 8277 I am not sure which on those models are most ugly, I think all especially the "Cat" allan -> this does not count, even as it is so ugly that eyes are in pain just from loocking at it The B model of 42000 upss.. "thay's one ugly n,f, " :) cheers Edit: - My selection Studded sets: Model B from 8853 - dam it is ugly Model B from 8838 - it is not the most pretty one as well - they could add Model Team wheel to the set.... Model A from 8446 - well not sure what that is... Studless: Model B from 42008 - looks like it is incomplete Edited June 15, 2015 by AOW Quote
