Starwars4J Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 August 6, 2007 - Ridley Scott, the brilliant filmmaking mind behind such extraordinary films as Alien and Gladiator, is venturing into rather new territory for an upcoming movie based on the classic Parker Brothers board game Monopoly. ... And the universe let out a thunderous, collective "WTF!?" This is the guy who is rumored to have turned down Halo because he didn't see enough potential for a story. The news first broke back in June that Scott was interested in directing a comedy-thriller based on the game. Now, Scott has dished a little to the Los Angeles Times about his thoughts on the film. "Monopoly is still the most popular board game -- I might be misquoting! -- in the world. So it's really finding the universe for that game," he explains. "Because clearly it ought to be humorous and for the family -- the funny way it brings out, particularly when your uncle suddenly gets Park Lane and -- in England, we have Park Lane, Mayfair and Barclay Square, what's it in America? Park and Madison? So you watch people change. You're witness to Jekyll and Hyde. Somewhere in that is a hysterically amusing and I think rather exciting film." Oh, boy. While actresses Scarlett Johansson and Kirsten Dunst have been rumored to be on the casting wishlist for the project, there is absolutely no hint at what the film's story might entail. X-O This will either be horrible or win an academy award. Source Quote
Wobo Ihi Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Freaky. But then again, they even made a Cluedo movie in 1985... Quote
Siegfried Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Well, when I heard that he had very little ideas when he started Gladiator and that it was heavily tweaked while being filmed I thought it would be a disaster. I ended up quite liking it. Thus I have to say do not underestimate the power of Ridley Scott.... Freaky. But then again, they even made a Cluedo movie in 1985... I didn't know that. Is it good? xwingyoda Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Please don't !! The past has shown us that 90% (at the very least) of adaptations of books, video games and remakes are pure crap !! Monopoly is a board game whith NO story at all, except be rich and ruin your loved ones - you call that a Hollywood nice moral ?? Hell no !! I am really fed up by Hollywood's totall lack of imagination there is absolutely no hint at what the film's story might entail. No really ?? Go figure why !! :-| What next ? A crappy Sims movie ?? Or even Better, an epic 3 hours long Nintendogs movie *y* *yoda* Quote
Zzz Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 What next ? A crappy Sims movie ?? Or even Better, an epic 3 hours long Nintendogs movie *y* *yoda* oh no... you stole my idea about the nintendogs movie... :-D so I will start a script of hide and seek - THE most famous children game in the world... *wacko* It really scares me, I always thought (cause of Alien, Blade Runner and Black Rain), that he is kinda cool guy, but I guess he has no ideas at all what to do... with his money... When I think about what kind of movies Robert Altman did, especially at the end.. that was interesting... whatever.. will the title be changed in japan into "itadaki street"? ;-) Quote
Siegfried Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 What next ? A crappy Sims movie ?? Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there is a Sims movie planned! *wacko* Quote
xwingyoda Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there is a Sims movie planned! *wacko* D'oh !! Oh the Humanity !! *yoda* Quote
JINZONINGEN73 Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Please don't !!The past has shown us that 90% (at the very least) of adaptations of books, video games and remakes are pure crap !! TRUTH! And yeah, he probably saw a script he liked about some money-hungry bastards ruthlessly fighting for financial superiority and said, "Well hell... if I slap "Monopoly" on the title, it might just sell!". Brainbox Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 You know when people say 'they'll make a movie out of anything'? And until now it was just that, a saying. Well, um, this applies, as does the Sims Movie. I think I'll reserve judgement on this one. I mean, it can't be easy turning a game into a film. And the universe let out a thunderous, collective "WTF!?" Hmm, I wonder why. ;-) Quote
Shadows Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Clue was actually a tolerable movie, but the game (Clue/Cluedo) had a plot and lots of characters. It was treated as a comedy and filled with interesting actors. Monopoly has ... Mr. Moneybags plus the cop and criminal. That's it. I mean, unless we end up with an invasion of huge CGI tokens representing everything from a battleship to a thimble, what else is there? Whoever thought this up should go to jail, directly to jail and no worries, they'll be lucky to scrape any money out of this ill-conceived plan. At least they can make products out of it. Monopoly: The Game! Wait, they've done that. Um. Monopoly: The Movie Edition of the Game of the Movie of the Game! YES! *walks off, shaking his head at the things people come up with* Could have at least picked something exciting like Yahtzee! Set it in Vegas. It's a convention of high rollers, all come together for the ultimate showdown. Nic Cage, Shia LeBouf (sp?), Sean Connery (he needs the work), Chuck Norris (just because) ... imagine the possibilities. *runs* Quote

Don't you mean, 'they'll be lucky enough to scrape enough money out of this to buy Old Kent Road.' ;-) Quote
xwingyoda Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Actually the only way that could work (and could be great) is if they have the main character beeing another Jim Profit >:-) That could be interesting hehe. The perfect money making man and genious bastard :-D But overall I do sense another crap movie with a lot of stars and glimpse :-/ *yoda* Quote
UniqueBuilder Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 This sounds terrible.. Actually even worse than terrible.. :-( THE only time a succesful movie was based on a game must have been Tomb Raider.. But this.. It just got to fail. 8- Quote
Lt. Col. Thok Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Freaky. But then again, they even made a Cluedo movie in 1985... Hey, Clue actually has a plot. Monopoly is a game were you run around buying shtick. No movie potential there. In the words of the almighty Comic Book Guy, "Worst. Movie based on a game. EVER!" Quote
hewkii9 Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Well at least the dude producing the Sims did Eragon and Norbit. Saw either of those? Quote
red Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Sooo, the idea sounds horrible, a movie from monopoly :-D they even said its going to be a comedy/thriller... Interesting... Well, I think they will make most money off of it at the theaters, because everyone will go just to see how they made a monopoly movie :-P @hewkii9~ I haven't seen any of those :-) Quote
Asuka Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Monopoly is a board game whith NO story at all, except be rich and ruin your loved ones - you call that a Hollywood nice moral ?? Hell no !! *yoda* Well.... yes! :-P Especially because in Hollywood most of the time money comes way before morals.... X-D Quote

5150 Lego Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Well at least the dude producing the Sims did Eragon and Norbit. Saw either of those? Eragon was ok, but Norbit sucked. Soiguess we have a half chance of the Sims being decent. Well, i just can't see Monopoly working as a movie. Like others have said, wha tplot could you possible have? And he turned down halo??? Makes me even more nervous! 8-| But i guess to be fair, I won't pass judgment intill i at least see a trailer, or find out a plot. Quote
JINZONINGEN73 Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 But i guess to be fair, I won't pass judgment intill i at least see a trailer, or find out a plot. I know, right? You have all these M1'ers thinking it's just going to be two hours of an overhead shot of a game in progress. Pfft, it's not supposed to REALLY be classic Monopoly. As long as it's got an old guy and 2 dice in it somewhere, it's still Monopoly. </beingsilly> Quote
xwingyoda Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 ... ...was that the actor with a French name... and the character slept at night naked in a cardboard box? About the french name I'm not sure that Adrian Pasdar is typical French but he has an amazing apartment but sleeps naked in his secret room naked ;-) For you who haven't seen the 8 only episodes, go and watch out, its just brilliant !! A monompoly movie like that could be fantastic ;-) And Sam Elliot as the oldie would be cool :-P *yoda* Quote
Starwars4J Posted August 9, 2007 Author Posted August 9, 2007 This could maybe work as a Jumanji type of movie Quote

Lord Admiral Helden Ravensdorn Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 The Halo universe doesnt have enough potential or following for a story, but Monopoly does, eh? I hope it flops. Horribly. Quote
