what paint do i need for transparant pieces?

I might try to customise something for myself but i need to paint transparant pieces. The thing is i'd like the paint to be transparant as well. Like glasspaint still is shinethrough i want that for my pieces too. And of course some durability. It's not really for playing but i dont want it to get scratches easy.

Anybody some advice?

You can get transparent paint from any B&Q or Homebase. It's right next to the Tartan paint.

Use varnish? I use a spray acrylic varnish.

Varnish like nailpolish? It is also transparant most of the times, right? Or is it too thick? What brand acrylic varnish do you use?
