There are several older/retired Technic sets I think i'd like to take a try at building. Bricklinking all these sets will get very pricey. I'm curious if anyone knows of any other sets that might contain high counts of Technic pieces. I've parted out a few Galaxy Squad sets that had some. My theory is to hopefully save a few dollars by stripping the Technic pieces out of the sets and adding the rest to my bricklink store. Or do you think it would more cost effective to just continue buying what I can get deals on, take what I need, sell the rest, and just order everything else. Any input would be appreciated, thank you.

Join rebrickable add your set and see were you are. Then you have a good idea of you need for mocs or set and start collecting. Bachaddict is right the cheapest is to buy sets

DrJB is spot on, I am a Technic / Bionicle fan, so I naturally bought most of these sets. They are masterfully done, have a very high count of Technic parts, and can be acquired at a decent price. I still miss Skopio, but that one is very rare, especially in Eruope.

Also I highly recommend the 8108 Mobile Devastator, those huge lime wheels are found only in that set, and it also holds many Technic & Bionicle parts. From Exo-Force, I would also add 7721 Combat Crawler X2 to the sets above. There are others, of course, but that's for you to decide. Good luck in your endeavor!

Most of the sets I'm thinking I'd like to build are mostly the tractors/harvester and some of the trucks like the 9397 logging truck, 8285 tow truck, 8258 crane truck, along with some of the contraction equipment. Actually that sounds like a lot doesn't it. I know some the newer ones I can get cheaper as a complete set. I guess on the other hand paying $200 for something weather as a complete set or brick linked it doesn't matter in the end.

We got this for my son recently '70165 Ultra Agents Mission HQ'

and I was impressed that it came with :

2 x 5by7 Beam Frames

12 x Black Flatpanels

and

6 x Silver metallic 11M Beams

plus many other technic pieces (oh and 8 wheels)

I built 8258 and 8285 via ebay from buying new parts. For 8285 i bought a second hand set to get the unique Metallic Silver parts, i then bought as many of the part inventory in brand new condition as i could. I belive i had over 95% of the parts brand new....the wheel hubs and the 77535 connectors were the hardest to find brand new.

I have been collecting parts to build old Technic sets myself, i have found lego Racers to be an excellent source of older parts. You can buy alot of the Racers sets brand new in box still, for example i bought 8140 and it had 4 of the old Black panel types i needed for 8285.

For the Combine Harvester what i plan to do is buy a second hand set cheap, take all the unique parts that cant be replaced with new parts and wash them....then buy all the other parts brand new. I have built lots of old Racers and Technic sets this way.

My most recent project is building 8649, i plan to review that set when i start to build.

if you're buying an old set anyway, why bother buying new parts for it?

From my experience, used/assembled sets, once washed, typically have good quality parts ... but of course, it's your $$$ ;)

Almost any UCS set will have a pretty good quantity of Technic parts, but they really are becoming more widespread. I helped my daughter build a Friends set that had multiple rack gears, an axle and two gears to make two panels/doors move in opposite directions when moved. I was pretty surprised to find them in that theme!

Which set was that?

Very nice find, this set has the largest number of large black panels (12) since like EVER :)

Almost, the set with the absolute largest number of black panels (28) is the FLL 2012 Senior Solutions

Thank you everyone for the responses, lots of helpful info in here. Hopefully more than just myself will benefit from it.

A little off topic. Getting back into Lego is VERY OVERWHELMING I just want so many sets, trying to make a realistic want list and it keeps growing and shrinking. Oh well that is half the fun I guess. Doesn't hurt having them on the want list, maybe I can move them to an active project list on day.

Because i want a **brand new** set, or close as possible. I disagree about parts looking the same after washing. They dont compare or look the same as brand new parts.

New parts are shinny and have no scratches, whereas used parts look used and have obvious time blemishes.

I buy second hand sets because there are usually parts unique to that set which can only be found in that set.

I was just checking out 70228 - Vultrix's Sky Scavenger, and while it probably doesn't have a huuge amount of technic bits (roughly 1/4 of the total), some of them are pretty new and useful. It has 4 of those black axle/pegs with 2M axle, 4 dark bley 1M "pin joiners" and strangely, 2 cardan cups which seem to serve a mere aesthetic purpose. I was actually searching for sets which contained the latter, and thought "what the hell is Chima doing here".
