gylman Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 I find the pictures of Vladek's castle quite disappointing. A typical childish castle. In general, the current state of castle architecture is quite sad. The quality of the build is totally inferior to castles like 6090 (Royal Knights), 6276 (Eldorado), 6085 (black monarch), 6074 (Black Falcon), and even lowly 6097 (bat lord). I took apart 6080 (King's castle) last night, and it was painful (physically, on my hands) and time consuming to rip it apart becuase of how well constructed and interlocked it was. The last 3 Lego castles, King Leo, Morcia, and the upcoming Vladek look childish and build childish compared to the castles of 1980's to 1995 (6090). Even 6090 was not that great to build - it just looked good. That is my ultimate lego wish - a beautiful and interesting to build UCS type castle. ya yah, I could build my own, but they are never as nice as what the Lego people design, and hunting down the parts you need when you have some special idea is an expensive pain. Oh well, sign me up to the whiny adult AFOL club. "it's a kids' toy" "it's a kids' toy" "it's a kids' toy" (he says to himself again and again) Gyl Quote

Yes, I somewhat agree with you there. I think the problem with the last 3 large castles is the use of the bigger pieces reducing the number of inter-locking pieces. This makes the overall appearance bulkier and the design less sophisticated. Quote
The Middleman Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 Royal Knight's is my favorite (first large LEGO for me, that and the Red Beard Runner), and it's superior to any castle since then. Still, this is a step in the right direction. Maybe not a leap, but they're getting there. Quote

Besides, its only a minor gripe. No rule says ya have to put the ornamentation on, or you can't add extra detail to the design to make it look less childish. Maybe that sounds contradictive. Quote
The Middleman Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 At least it doesn't have an abysmal piece count like some castles we could name. Realizing that high-piece high-price castles sell well might put them on to making more, perhaps a nice gray one. Quote

Call me old fashioned or a traditionalist, but I prefer the older sets with less colours and smaller pieces. I think the sets in the early 90's were spot on. Quote
The Middleman Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 Like I said before, Royal Knight's Castle is the example of a perfect castle. Give us something like that in the new blays, we'll be all set. I actually think Vladek's Dark Fortress is leaning towards ninja-ish, though, with those large slope pieces. It reminds me of the Flying Fortress. Quote

Governor Mister Phes Posted March 25, 2005 Author Governor Posted March 25, 2005 I'm pretty sure it's final. You going to get one? Over 800 pieces isn't going to be cheap and even the smaller sets can be quite pricey. Quote
The Middleman Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 It's probably going to be $100, I'll be surprised if it's over that. I'll get one. Quote

Is that in US dollars or Euro dollars? The Castle of Morcia with 632 is US$89.99 at Lego.com, so thats around 200 pieces less and $10 difference. Methinks its going to be a bit more than $100. However! The Castle of Morcia is US$89.99 and At$149.95 at Lego.com! But when $US89.99 is converted to Australia dollars, its only A$115.75 Obviously Lego hasn't acknowledged the Australian dollar has risen in the past couple of years. So they're going to charge me more than its worth in the US! Another good reason for me to go to eBay and not Lego.com. Obviously the Australia dollar fluxates, but not that much they can't update its value on their website to reflect current market value! eBay does it automatically afterall. So I'll assume that the same price disprepancy will exist with this set too. Quote
ImperialJohn Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 All these BIIIG sets. I think LEGO should make more "pick-me-up-as-you-pass-by" sets. 3-5 $ right at the counter :$ And use the Vignet's as inspiration (Instead af LEGO factory *sick*) And they could do that with almost all themes. SW, castle, orient, viking and so on. Now that would move !! At least into my home. :) Quote

While Vladek's Dark Fortress has a fair amount, there are a lot more smaller pieces. Additionally, LEGO markets Knight's Kingdom to smaller children, mostly, so there probably won't be a large price tag. Quote

Still I'd try and get one of eBay when they're first released as they'll be adundant and cheaper. Quote
