Back on topic ;)

As you say, it would not be complicated to make a quite nice and easy MOC on a great theme that is lacking some serious sets :'(

For sure, I consider getting rid of the long thing at the front of the ship (my appologies but I do not the real term :$ ) and replace it with a canon (just maybe).

That long thing at the front is the bowsprit. If you look at the other larger Pirate ships from the Classic Prate theme you'll notice most had a spinnaker attached.

Thanks mister_phes for the vocabulary lesson ;) (I admit one was needed :-D ).

The bowsprit looks great on a big ship, but just complicate the smaller ones (its a question of taste anyway).

It seems quite pointless on Captain Kragg's Craft without a sail attached to it. It serves no other function but to place the diminuative Scorpion Figurehead and take up more space!

Yeah, I miss the old pirate sails that were actually strung up and worked. And made sense.

If I can find a Captain Kragg's Craft on sale I'll modify it into a old Pirate set that makes sense - that's if I can find a suitable sail for a spinnaker. And if I can find one on sale for the right price. I'm not willing to pay over 75% of the price!

I wasn't so sure about the new Pirates sets.... but from that picture Mr Phes posted of Captain Kragg's.. well, there might be a good amount of stuff to salvage! Would his pirate hat be too big for a proper Minifig to wear? Actually the only things I don't like are the silly logo on the sail (actually I like it on it's own, just not on a Lego pirate ship. I'd put that on my car!) and the figure himself. I could happily use the rest of the parts. Hmmm, this may not be so bad after all.... until they re-release some proper Lego pirate stuff.

I suspect there may be a number of savalagable pieces from the 4+ Pirate sets. However its the design of those sets is what I find makes them appalling, not so much the actual pieces.

Big pieces would be quite useful for designing large sets, however there needs to be many smaller generic pieces to provide structural integrity and design ingenuity. Otherwise the end result is what we see in the current 4+ Pirate sets - a bunch of large pieces tacked together with little apparent thought into their arrangement.

Well that's what I see anyway...

It's been over 2.5 years since this has been replied to. The 4+ pirate theme was, honestly, about the same as Belville. The smaller accessories and random parts could be, for the most part, salvaged and used very slightly only when neccesary. However, every single other element can be deemed useless right off the bat.
