I think your best result, especially for a *big* dragon, will be to build something yourself using a mix of system and constraction parts, but as for "official" Lego dragons, my favorite has always been the very fierce and posable Viking dragon from set 7017.

As for pure looks, that might go to the new Smaug, but I really don't like those huge, rigid neck an tail pieces. Those along with the barely articulated legs I think really limits what you can do with it… but the new wings are nice. :)

LEGO just released a Creator set called Red Creatures that goes for $15, and includes parts to build a large red dragon along with a scorpion and a snake.

Yes, 31032 is nice! I think that dragon body along with a sculpted head (like from 7017) would look cool. Not that the brick-build head isn't well done, but one of the other heads might make it feel more creature-y along the lines of the trends larger official Lego creatures have been following over the last several years.

My favorite as of now is the Ultra-Dragon from Ningago's Epic Dragon Battle. However, if you want a more traditional Castle dragon, I would say to build your own, including the head.

I own two green armored Fantasy dragons and a hungarian horntail. I consider Smaug the ultimate dragon. The horntail is not detailled enough. The green one is nice, but inferior to Smaug I think.

The even more Ultimate dragon would be an airbrushed Smaug in dark green and brown. Or a dark green brickbuilt body with two heads from the molded green dragon.

Smaug is certainly the best I have seen in a Lego molded creature. If money is no object, it would certainly be worth it to give him a try. The model has received overall great reviews.

Over the years we have come across a few dragons. Some in green colour, some in red. Some I don't remember...

Smaug is really ahead of his predecessors. The design is elegant and fitting. The folding wings are just great. You can position him in many different ways (if you're into photo comics or brickfilms).

And Smaug looks just great.

Smaug also has my vote. If he just had four legs and maybe in green he would be the best dragon possible and I'd buy several.

Smaug has solid joints and wings, great printing, and the set he comes with is not that bad at all - overall a solid purchase.

Although I prefer brick build creatures in general I must say I'm a huge fan of license themed maxi figs. And Smaug is just...well tremendous is the right word. I fell in love with the first picture I saw. I already have the set but I'll wait until christmas :D

He is really shattering and in no way as chubby and comic like as the latest castle dragons. But he still has this lego appearance we all love.

And his wings are a milestone in design.

And I'm sure it's possible to replace the wings for arms (there are a few in dark red from the fantasy era dragons) and putting them on the back, if you want a four legged beasty.

I went through the animal body part category on bricklink for quite a while to See if there was a Way to built a massive dragon from all elephant/dinosaur/whatever parts available, but nothing seems to work. Maybe jurassic World will help.

I have some of the dragons from the Fantasy Era sets; I also have the current Dragon Mountain set, and I really like those dragons - they are all similar, just changing the colors.

Brick built doesn't seem to be popular in this thread, but I also have this set, which is quite a nice build (IMO). Folding wings, poseable, light brick to light up the fire, giant shackle with chains around it's neck (which can be removed, if that's not your thing, of course).
