If anyone has played the game Shadow of the Colossus for PS2 (I HIGHLY recommend it) this MOC is based on the bird colossus. I changed a few things from the game, namely the main character's weapon and the shape of the bird's tail.

Getting girls to play with/buy LEGO
mcfarlandman replied to FiletOFish's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Thanks for the link Rick - I searched "girls" instead of "girl" and missed that The forum gods may do what they wish with this one. I definitely agree on the minifigs - not only have I seen lots of girls going for them, but there's also actually a lot of girl minifigs in them. I've actually had girls ask me to pick them up certain minifigures once they've seen mine (easier said than done...) A "nice" fairytale theme could go a long ways for girls, boys, and AFOLs. If the Fantasy line was Lord of the Rings, I picture this as more similar to Narnia - lots of animals and adventure minus any troll battle wheels... -
Getting girls to play with/buy LEGO
mcfarlandman replied to FiletOFish's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I was browsing the LEGO aisle the other day with my girlfriend and we came across one of those pink tub lego starter sets and it got me thinking - why isn't lego as popular with girls? My girlfriend said that girls who might play with lego don't want pink pink pink - if they like that they'll go for the barbies/bratz dolls - and therefore the "pink tub" wasn't the way to get girls into lego. She suggested a fairy tale theme (mermaids and fairies) and a zoo theme. Thinking back to my childhood, my little sister was always most interested in my lego animals. She built them barns and pastures and "habitats" as she called them. So what do you guys think? As a math/science teacher in training I'd love to see more girls interested in building, math, engineering and the like (areas that I feel like lego and other construction toys give boys a leg up in). What could lego do to appeal to girls? Obviously including more non-helpless/captured female figs would help along with including females in those golden $10 range sets. -
I really love the design here and props for being brave enough to not do minifig scale. I really hope it doesn't get looked over for that. Best of luck!

Way to take a tough concept and fly with it - Awesome!

I had trouble with that too. I wanted to be somewhat accurate to the movie but I also thought the movie didn't capture the charming Lovegood weirdness very well. I tried to strike a balance by having the dark exterior (as seen in the movie) and colorful plants and interior. I definitely see where you're coming from.

A tribute to one of my favorite Harry Potter characters - the always lovable and quirky Luna Lovegood! After counting multiple times, it came in at somewhere between 925-950 pieces. I'm particularly fond of the tilted second story. The Lovegoods keep some interesting plants! Here we have Luna and her father Xenophilius. Luna claims she's not related to any cheerleaders... I think the Prince of Persia robes look great on Xenophilius. Interior Shot - The top floor is Luna's bedroom complete with pictures of her friends (Neville and Hermione pictured). The second floor is Xenophilius study. It's furnished with a bookshelf, reclining chair, and a telescope. The first story includes a dining area, bust of Rowena Ravenclaw with headdress, and the Erumpent Horn (which will later explode). Thanks for putting on this contest and best of luck to everyone! - Wish I could take better pictures! -Erik Edit: Replaced some photos with less blurry ones.

My thoughts on the evolution of LEGO Castle
mcfarlandman replied to Hive's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
While I agree that, looking back, Fright Knights does look silly, when it came out I was 10. I was in the height of my good vs. evil phase and I couldn't get enough of both Fright Knights and UFO for similar reasons. Up until that point my lego collection was a mass of knights and spacemen with, in my opinion, no one to fight. I didn't really distinguish between different factions since I could only get a couple small sets a year (those few humans had to band together to survive). With Fright Knights and UFO lego introduced "bad guys" and while some may argue that this started LEGO's continuing trend of being more battle oriented and violent - I saw it as drawing away from human vs human conflict that, as a kid (and now) isn't as appealing to me. Philosophical rant aside - I think Fright Knights deserves credit for having the first (and only?) vertically designed large castle and giving us this: http://www.brickset....ail/?Set=6007-1 - There was no better way for a 10 year old to spend $4.50 - a black dragon, a cape, and a minifigure that looks like the "Dark Lord". Yes, please. -
LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 3 discussion
mcfarlandman replied to Klaus-Dieter's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Just got back from grabbing some at the Fred Meyer in Bellingham, WA. I was able to "feel out" 4 elves (and I left a 5th there for someone else :D). Some things I noticed - -The gorilla head has holes for the minifigure's eyes to show through and there's a zipper printed on the back of the torso. -The hulu girl's skirt wraps around and is made of the same material as the capes. It doesn't come together at the ends as well as I'd like. - The samurai has a very cool floral printed robe under the armor. - The back of the chief's headdress is black where his hair should be, not white like the old Wild West headdresses. -The speakers on the boombox are actually round with texture, not just printed on - really cool! - The elf ears are part of the hairpiece and they're AWESOME! -
Good call on the 1x1 round plates - I added them I soon as I read your post Captain Blackmoor! Thanks everyone for the comments!

A library and fine dining. The courtyard.

Hope you all aren't tired of seeing Spartan Themed MOCs. After poking around here I realize that this certainly isn't the first or the best classic Greek Temple, but I don't think I've seen a Medusa yet! Don't look into the Medusa's eyes. A poor petrified soul. The Medusa.

Royal Knight's Castle probably because it came out in the prime of my childhood set oggling days. Looking back it still looks great though!
-
Very impressive - nice job getting all that purple!
-
Great job! I love the grim future - terminator type style.
-
Love it. I like that everyone seems to just be having fun as opposed to a more serious "base". Makes me want an elf faction even more.

Congratulations Fugazi! A valiant effort Bluecoats... maybe next time :D Great contest - thanks and congratulations to all!

I pray my entry for the second round brings to light the great many offenses the Bluecoats have dealt the crown (His majesty Ole Kirk Christiansen - a true Redcoat if I ever knew one!). May justice come swiftly to them all! May this round be and bold and bloody as the first! - Admiral McFarlandman

Thanks everyone for the comments and compliments! I mean... Yarrrrg!

Harrrgh! Here's My Redcoat entry - had a ton of fun making it. Remember - Keep it dirty ya scallywags ;) P.S. Due to my outdoors job I only have a chance to use the internet on Friday nights and Saturdays so if I don't respond I'm not necessarily lost at sea...

D2C Designers requesting feedback for 2012 models
mcfarlandman replied to CopMike's topic in General LEGO Discussion
1. Yes and No. I buy them for the model, but eventually everything becomes parts. 2. Individual 3. Notre Dame Cathedral 4. A large scale space set (not star wars) or anything medieval or castle related (Medieval Market Village was excellent!) 5. I like the idea of the town modular buildings - they are smaller and cheaper than sets like the taj mahal but can be put together to make something grand. Oh, and an Elves subtheme for castle would be fantastic.
