  1. I think that in the context of a UK STEAM event you should either try to make your engine look and work as authentically as possible or build it into a model of a traction engine or an old fair ground ride or something. That would be quite a cool thing.
  2. Good topic but I have not answered the poll as I don't think it is as simple as "yes" or "no". Maybe there should be a third one that says in moderation or something like if it is absolutely necessary (like in star wars of boinicle for instance). I think cartoony violence is ok in very considered amounts. In the star wars games I think that where it got to the scene of lukes hand being cut off was very well handled. It told the story, but made a joke at the same time, exploiting the fact that minifig hands are designed to come off.
  3. I don't think you will have much luck with the current lego compressors as these engine take up vast amounts of air. However if you don't want to spend hundreds on a real air compressor or don't want the noise, and you only want relatively short bursts, you might want to try moddifying one of those gardener planter sprayer thingys http://www.transtools.co.uk/store/prod_138...r-5-litre-.html You can get quite alot of pressure out of one of these
  4. I had the same problem with my UCS imperial star destroyer meaning the two bottom panels that are held up by magnets and hinges would separate at the magnets. Built it twice and correctly both times.
  5. I completely agree with everything you just said. Legos values are still very much alive and well in the lego city, creators, technic, and many other lines. The only difference now is that there is a choice between these and sets of a more violent nature (which are also great ) Besides I don't think that if a boy buys an indy set he'll only ever build scenes from indy movies. He'll use his imagination and build spaceships and forts and hospitals and fairground rides and all kinds of stuff. An indy set is only an indy set after you've built it. Before then it's a pile of bricks with which you can build whatever you want just like any other lego product. The values of lego live on !
  6. Just read the update for 1994 and WOW! That was well worth the wait. All 8 sets were reviewed increadably well and as for 8880! There have been many reviews for this set but yours is the best by far. I have always considered that as one of my top 3 sets of all time and you have really done it justice. Well done. Can't wait for 1995 now! (Only one away from 1996 and THE SPACE SHUTTLE!).
  7. Ooooooooooh 1994 is gonna be goooooood! I check back most days for updates can't wait for the next one. Then I won't be able to wait for the next one and especially the one after that! nevermind about how long it takes, it's always better to do it good then to do it fast, and yours is VERY good my friend. If only I could convince my boss of that One day you will have created the most extensive and up to date information on every technic set ever released, it's gonna be sooooooo awsome!
  8. Yes it would be very cool to have an automatic. What if lego did it in a family saloon or something. Cant be more boring than the endless tractors they keep coming out with! If I understand you correctly you can achive something similar by using the newer style axle connector http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/6538c as it does not have any ridges.
  9. Cool, the cherry picker is a great model. Well I like that is has a gearbox but it is basically the one from the 8448 which has a few flaws, for instance, it cannot handle much tourque due to some gears being not quite close enough (which would be required if you wish to motorise it), it takes alot of the motors mechanical output power to function (resulting in much of the motors power being wasted, to a lesser extent the same problem with the CV joints in the hubs when being driven at an angle) and changing gears is not as smooth as it is in the 8880. Now please don't get me wrong this is a great MOC, however, with lego's capability to improve parts and design and produce totally new parts, I would expect a new supercar from lego to not have these problems. Fully RC would be good (especially if powered by a motor with a high power output and high rpm) Automatic gearbox would be good but i would also love a manual with a much smoother gearchange mechanism or a paddel shift gearbox. I agree with you on the gull wing doors. What about those doors that open up and forwards? I know there is a disscusion on www.technicbricks.blogspot.com concerning the question of how much would we spend on a hugh (2500-3000+ peice) technic set (of anything, not just a supercar) and what would we like to see from it. Obviously what people would want to see from a 350+ euro set is much more than what we have discussed hear. It's well worth having a look (along with the rest of the site). But iv'e heard no rumours regaurding lego releaseing such a set or a supercar of any kind. Where did you hear these rumors?
  10. They do say that the wooden structure is there only for health and saftey reasons and that the lego bricks are not actually touching them. They are not holding the house up but will help to prevent injury should the house fail. They are also using wooden floor boards (which is understandable as I guess they could'nt get enough 8x16 baseplates for the floors) but they will hopefully be supported by beams made of 100% lego that are not attatched to the wooden structure.
  11. I saw that model a while ago and thought it looks great, is one of the tidiest MOCs iv'e seen. Wouldn't be surprised if the guy who made it worked for lego at some point. But if I must nitpick I would say that there isn't enough hear to make it the supercar we have all been waiting for. Dont get me wrong, it's brilliant, for a MOC.
  12. Quentin played a great character in dusk till dawn and is credited with writing the screenplay but, for what it's worth, he did not direct Dusk till dawn. I guess that is why that movie is not mentioned as being his. Still it's a great movie. My dad got it me when I was 12 and told me nothing about it, he just said watch it, so I did. I did not have a clue there was anything to do with vampires in it all the way through the first half of the movie, it was great
  13. Yeah that's the one!
  14. Great review thankyou for posting. Are you sure about that peice count tho! I liked this model very much. My only gripe with it is the gearbox cannot handle much torque (which is why I always design my own when building MOCs) and the gear change mechanism is nowhere near as good as the 8880 mechanism.
  15. Well it is Quinten Tarentino who is prabably the marmite of movies, but I think his movies are great and will be seeing inglorious bastards at some point. So what do people hear think of some of his other movies? Pulp fiction: Great film, kept my attention throughout and had some very cool characters which I think the film may lean on just a teeny bit too much to male it a good film but it is still a great movie anyway. Kill Bill 1&2: Both good with lots of action and violence and the way she introduces each character is great. not his best and at two movies is a bit long but had some very good moments and is deffinately worth watching. Deathproof: The girls!!!! the car chase at the end is also a contender for the best car chase ever put on screen. The lengthy dialogue between the second group of girls that starts the second act is a bit too long though.
  16. Awsome site. You cover everything to do with the models but I have an idea. If you think it's a good idea (I can appriciate that your site takes a tremendous amount of work is it is!) you could include pictures of the box designs and such as it would be interesting to see how we got from the very nice boxes (with a see through lid so you could see all the peices and even a tray that shows you the special peices and a little diagram that just gave you a teeny tiny taster of the mechanics without giving much away as to how all the model works and so on) to just a box (with a lid on only the largest of sets). I really do like your site very much and whilst I don't wish to rush you of anything I do check back at your site most days to see if the next year has been posted. It's great! Can't wait for 1994 (8880!) but most of all can't wait for 1996 (8480!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) There are sooooo many others I can't wait to see either. T H A N K Y O U V E R Y M U C H F O R T E C H N I C O P E D I A ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
  17. I suppose there are a few ways. One is to create a line that's just for them (like belville was). I wonder if it would be best to make it totally girly with pink everywhere and ponies and princesses in castles and such. Or would a completely different approach be better like a theme that revolves around a group of female spies. What do you think? Another way is a little more subtle whereby they realease sets aimed at girls within an existing theme or many themes like city (or bionicle. They could have a pink one!) It would be interesting to see what ideas people here have for sets within existing themes that might appeal to girls. There could be lots of city sets (that boys might want aswell so that the countless police and firemen, er firepersons, might have someone to save!) like: the vets with lots of animals or a zoo, a california beach (with womens volleyball!!!!!!), a hairdressers/salon/spa thingy, an all girl rock band on stage with a large audience/ticket office/backstage area/food and drinks vendors/etc (think of all the minifigures!), a shopping mall, a school maybe? or just some nice suburban houses with gardens (including instructions to build ten different looking houses with the same peices). What do ya think?
  18. I don't think it has as much to do with which demographic Lego sets are aimed at as people think. Yes they are mainly geared towards boys but there is a very simple reason for this. In general boys like building and constructing things more than girls do. For many reasons to do with spacial awareness, insticts from when we were cavemen and so on they just....do. That is why they are geared more towards boys, because they are easier to sell lego to. I hate "political correctness" especially when a simple truth must be distorted to become PC. The truth is boys and girls are different. That doesn't mean to say that Lego should not release some sets that are aimed towards girls because of cause they should. I just wouldn't expect the same kind of sales figures that you would get from some other products aimed more towards boys. So in short this aiming of sets towards boys is not a causal effect, but a reactive effect of boys likeing Lego more than girls. Thats just the way we are.
  19. My guess would be around about christmas time on the bbc.
  20. WOW The parts look very similar to mine (mine is larger but I only have 5 models built up where as you have all of them!) I have used a number of these stanley ones http://www.stanleytools.com/default.asp?CA...ional+Organizer http://www.stanleytools.com/default.asp?CA...ional+Organizer where each compartment it it's own little yellow tub which (is expensive but) deffinately worth it. But your collection of sets is just increadable wish I had a display like that. I noticed you have my favorite model, 8480, top and centre along with it's b-model. Very nice!
  21. I've been lookin for the ad from 1992 of the 8868 air tech claw rig. I can vaugley remember it sort of building itself and it also had the 8836 sky ranger i think but i'm not sure. At the end the 8868 crane arm moved the technic logo into place and a voice-over said "lego technic....the dynamics of mechanics!" Anyone remember it or know where I can find it?
  22. Oooooh a ghost ship! thats a great idea could be really dark and spooky with loads of skeleton minifigs and such.
  23. 1) Using parts and materials only supplied in any and all lego products in any theme as they come out the box. No glue. No cutting/modifying of parts. No competitors parts. 2) Yes. 100% of the time. 3) It depends on the use of impure items. If it is a custom sticker (for authentisity) or chrome plated part then that looks impressive and really nice although not 100% pure. A MOC that uses a part(s) that has been made completely from scratch to be used solely as a lego part and to the same quality, tolerances and standard and out of the same plastic as a pure lego part is VERY impressive and as close to being pure without being 100% pure as you can get. However the use of cut, filed, glued (modified in any way) parts and non lego parts is cheating and therefore unimpressive, I see them not as lego MOCs but MOCs made with the help of lego. I frown upon them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  24. That would be awsome! A hugh and very highly detailed pirate ship with 4 very tall masts and mind boggleing rigging and sails that can be stowed away, lots of cannons, working rudder and anchors, upper and lower deck and at least 2500 parts (and maybe a slighty smaller version for the good guys!) . That would be sooooo cool!
  25. You couldn't really approach him for a conversation or anything. He came over to us, with a megaphone! . He said he was happy with the pace of the building of the bricks as it was going faster than anticipated and that the house build will take about two and a half weeks. He also said that there is a parrallel universe made of lego and the front door of his house will lead to it! Ha ha. Another Guy told me they are currently trying to design a beam strong enough to support the 1st floor (is that 2nd floor in American?). Do you think they read the first post in this topic! They should try using 8x16 baseplates instead of 2x4 bricks and have it about 24 bricks high (and 15 feet long). Surely that would be pretty strong. Also they should find a way of supporting them so that any flexing of the beam (which if designed well should flex long before it breaks) will not cause any flexing or bowing of the walls (ie by having them placed on top of the inner wall with a small gap above the beam to allow for some movement) as this could be disasterous and very hazardous. Hear are some pictures (not mine) of the bricks. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/surrey/8179678.stm There really wasn't anything else to see as the house is going to be built in a different location. I shall try to post some pictures soon tho.
