Are LEGO Trains Classed as "Real" Model Trains?
CBFasi replied to Paul B Technic's topic in LEGO Train Tech
In my view yes they are model trains, I have N and L ! Both have distinct differences, but some of those differences are no more than comparison of scale. L has the issue of not a huge range of trains, stock to buy, you actually have to design and make it all yourself, along with everything else. The challenge in the traditional model trains is the building layouts and scenery. There is nothing to stop a person taking L trains as far as they can go in similarity to traditional model trains, that is except the blocky visualisation and sheer cost! -
It does however seem as though he does not ship to Europe. (but someone stocks them as his website indicates )

I may be a PF user but this track looks like it will provide the variations that LEGO failed to do, in particular half length, different curves, and maybe some better junctions (I am thinking of the crossover one that does not let both tracks run straight at same time)
-
I got caught by this, was not clear until I actually physically saw and tried that I found out parallel straights using them was impossible. As for Curves, yep they are a great challenge, yes I thought of heading towards flexi, but thats almost a cop out.. I am also lucky to have a large amount of corners and in the near to medium future should not need more, maybe by then LEGO will bring them back..
-
Looks rather good, the sizing is already giving me ideas for variations. Gone and ordered the instructions. If satisfied, will buy set for my Birthday in July (Unless I get lucky with money then earlier!)

Wondering if anyone has come up with a successful modificatin for Emerald night to deal with the incline /corner problems
-
Some carriages are being built to go with it, but will take time as I am awaiting parts
-
The gaps are awaiting a small oversight, got the parts for the main body but need a few parts to turn the 2 into 3 wheels on the undercarraige. Also I was more concerend with top than lower, will workout what I can do with the lower...
-
The high speed train visualisation on the side was just a qucik idea of a way to break up the plain sides. Also being brick built adds some much needed weight or the engine goes just too fast and flies off the rails on the corners (in testing with battery, motor it did that!) I am working on the carriages now, at least up to the point where I wait for more parts to arrive..

What's with all the Technic hate?
CBFasi replied to Ratbat's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
My niece who is 7 built the huge Technic dozer, with a little help.. Ok she had some help to ge the parts to join, but we both enjoy building using the full range of lego, technic has some rather useful parts, in fact often the main models are built using technic with the rest hiding the technic! I remember Technic when I first met it, was the Technic Pneumatic digger back in the early-mid 80's I think In fact right now I am built a minfig scale At-At based walker and its so far predominanlty technic, especially since its the only way to get the walking motion.. Technic is definately not gone for me.. -
Well the parts arrived yesterday, took 2 hours to build from the mlcad programme, also had to make some minor changes for under roof re-enforcement. As said is 7 wide, and this uses the RC Bugger motor, and the battery space is suitable for either the actualy battery back (as seen) for which as you will also see sits in a hole to lower its height.. or the new Re-chargeable pack will fit if you do not want the hole... Anyway less talk, lets see it... Side views, spot the battery pack hanging... Front quarter Rear Quarter So what is inside.. not much, but it fits!
-
In the not too distant future I will post pictures of some of the solutions I have found in this delving into 7 wide trains.. The solution for the old battery looks rather good
-
I think I may have worked out a way to solve the problem of the height of the battery pack, have it rest in a hole so it is actually hanging below the main floor, bit like the old train plates with cutouts.... using technic to stop it going to far through the hole..
-
I actually used the method shown here Its working quite well, along with that railbricks bogie with gearing. The more I look at the size my engine and the need to be to hold the battery box and motor, a Santa Fe variation may have to be the right way, aleady about the right length scaled up. Will see how things work out and maybe get more pics
-
If it was not for the battery box it would be a very suitable motor, also still needed a better train look around it..
-
Yep still rather new to 7 wide concept.. Where can I find instructions/guides to various designs done in 7 wide, looking for ideas to build my own engines and rolling stock, but with my 'limited' range of bricks. (My imagination is still pretty dead and needs some help) Tried search here but it does not let you search when you got less then 3 characters in one of the search parts and 7 is only 1 character ! Hope there is some help out there.

Well I had this motor sitting around and I thought why not see how it performs in a train. http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?P=5292 Well design about is poor as you can get, but it shows that a 7 wide train can handle this motor, and what was most surpising was the speed and power from this motor.. Uses a slight variation to the wheel trucks design from Railbricks Magazine 6, page 63-65 Yes I have the motor direct connected to the vertical axle, the only thing that stops the motor from moving around is the fact its a fraction under 5 studs wide and fits nicely in the 5 wide gap of a 7 wide design Biggest issue is the height of the old battery holders (the new rechargeable battery is not exactly cheap, and is with the Emerald Night at the moment) Had both this and the Emerald night chasing, this had 3 44long carriages and the Emerald Night carrige and it was outrunning Emerald with ease ! Original idea was a powerful freight engine, but turns out to outperform what was going to the be passenger runner in speed and load capability ! Shows that yet another motor can be used for trains, not sure if anyone else has done this, not exactly serached, but this was a spur of thought test last night just to see if it worked. Just wondering if anyone has an ideas as to what type of actualy engine could use this and allow the motor, IR control and battery unit to fit.

Had not realised about the images size limit until after I had done the post, at least I did not post the orginals (over 3k pixels wide!), will remember for next time, even smaller (and makes it eaier on my server) (Resize now carried out) The motivation was that it didn't quite look right behind the 7 wide engine, being relatively new to trains its a good time to shift to 7 wide as I have little stock built up in this field. The lengthing was indeed based on the cable problem, I saw what happened when the cable got caught going round some corners (causing some derailments) and had wondered how to solve until I started this adjustement, the length was a spur of the moment solution.

What made you get out of your LEGO dark age?
CBFasi replied to BearHeart's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Played with Lego 1981-1989(age 14), moved overseas for 3 years and by Lego box was put in storage... Came back and as by this time I had lost the interest for Lego. Back in 2002 I visited my sister in Germany and we went to Toy'R'Us with my neice and she liked the Lego and brought a kit, I too could not resist... was the Huge City Contruction Crane (the one shaped like a T). I have not looked back since, and sort of have over 100 times Lego than I had when I was kid already.. -
Ok what you see is the post LLD build, still awaiting the parts in proper colours to arrive... (and some parts I do not actually have in any colour) Width increased from 6 to 7, length of storage area increased by 1, also increased height by 1 layer. This latter change was to solve a problem with the cable from the battery to the IR receiver, it solves that issue of the cable getting caught.. Some pictures. Sorry I have yet to work out how to get the sodding camera to manual focus again so its not clear on some (never misplace manuals!) Back of the tender, ladder moved to side and light centralised This shows rather well the increased width and length, the increased height means a cover could be built if wanted. Rather blurred but you might just make out the cable goes out the doors of the tender to the engine. This shows the above much betterr (and yes I missed a 2x1 plate, just noticed !) The underside, no deeper than the original (good advantage of the method used by the guy that widened the Emerald Night Carrige) Spot space for parts I am waiting for, but the pins will sit in these holes as are anyway, just a bit flexible... Also the first time I used LDD in anger, pity some of the parts it lets you use are not possible to get on BrickLink, but I exchanged them for other sizes, hope it works out.. The battery btw is sittng on 4 of them offset plates, so it wont move much even with that space on sides...

The MOC Trains will likely end up more fictional, but based on real, but with LEGO RP requirements, such as ability to carry certain loads etc. The related terrain will keep on evolving too (v2 is already gone, v3 underconstruction, awaiting some kits and parts)
-
Yours is one of the sets of pictures that set me off thinking about 7 wide, along with the link I already provided. The more I think about it, 7 wide is likely the way I will go, with the odd 8 wide for oversized loads, at least 8 wide vs 7 wide wont look to bad as 8 vs 6.. Time to start planning and working out what comes first when it comes to purchasing parts.. (already havea reasonable number of wheels etc, just need to build bases and bodies)
-
Ok here goes... Emerald Night, a rather nice looking train (ok understatement) Now its tender looks narrow, (in fact it is, only 6 wide compared to cab of 7 wide) Its carriage again looks narrow (seen someone else seen this.. http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?...l=emerald+night ) Now which may look better with Emerald Night, doing 7 wide to fit with that cab. Doing 6 wide, standard LEGO sizing.. Or actually going to 9 wide (since Emerald night is actually 9 wide in total!!!) Now I dont want to start the 'famous' debate of which is better, but I am looking for an honest assessment such to make best visual use of the Emerald Night Engine. If this means adjusting the tender and rolling stick to 7 wide then so be it If this looks even better as 8 wide then again, so be it... Worth noting the layout board is only 4ft(1.2m) deep so I am using 2 full turns with 3 straight gap between the 90deg turns, I cant do it any wider also is only 8ft(2.4m) long. (I am thinking 7 wide as the 'special' loads can still be 8 wide without major overhang)

Well new here. Had a Dark age (1989-2008) Came back (thanks to my neice, who also likes lego) Found Bricklink and well... I staying! I had vague memories of playing at a friends back in the early 80's with blue train tracks and trains. Never actually had any trains as a kid. After the Dark age I brought what I thought was a large amount of the 4.5v grey trakcs (until I saw here I thought was a lot, now its tiny). Brought the instruction sets the thw small and medium size loco, got some train bases, but did not got much further at the time.... then.. Along came Emerald Night.... My own Christmas pressy to me, even held off opening until 26th.. Well I now have a layout on a 8'(2.4m) x 4'(1.2m) board, it varies but Emerald Night (at 9 wide) is now showing a small flaw in my earlier purchases.... It cannot pass its own carrige as the 8 width tracks under the old 4.5 system with the junctions are right next to each other, no clearance at all... Safe to say I have started purchasing the newer tracks to solve this (eventually will be selling off the old tracks). Thankfully I am that new I am still on debate of 7 wide or 8 wide to fit in with Emerald Night (6wide carriages just makes that engine look HUGE). Trains not only part of Lego I enjoying, pretty much, Star Wars (built yard with train feeds to build a minifigure scale AT-AT that I hope will walk!, City (around the space in the yard layout), Boats (including an simple yet effective oil rig trial that floated using two the large ship hulls) I am thinking of rebuilding the yard to basically turn the small tunnel into a underground station like setup as there will be two of the modular setups above it when done. Having issues with batteries on camera so no piccies of the latest version of the train & AT-AT etc yet.. But I can show is the rig (last years build) and some of the version 1 images of the layout. (that crane can lift the whole AT-AT construction at the moment, old 4.5motor used to provide weight when crane not in use, else the line (21lb fishing line) slackens. Once batteries are re-charged I will get piccies added to show the layout as it currently stands (version 3 adjustments already in planning) Also stuck in North Cornwall, UK so not exactly had opportunity to see any LEGO shows etc as a AFOL, I can but dream and the pictures I see from many others that are clearly much better skilled than I (I am still getting used to SNOT concepts etc!!) Oil Rig Picture 1 Oil Rig Picture 2 Oil Rig Picture 3 This room is also the store room so other stuff may get seen in the pictures, in background.. Layout 1 Picture 1 Yes thats an 8 wide special transport container in the background, turned the Heavy Haulage tipper into a unit for carrier 20ft containers, maybe a flaw here in that old 8 wide container, its well out of all other LEGO standard builds. Flatcars etc clear sa they gettign used to deliever parts frequently from the boxes at the end hidden behind me in this picture Layout 1 Picture 2 Layout 1 Picture 3 The legs, gearing locked down with racks to keep it stable, it does move right under manual movement, yet to build the connecting rods etc and the full motor setup, all to be delieved by train.. Layout 1 Picture 4 Layout 1 Picture 5 Even more Sci-Fi Association Layout 1 Picture 6 How to avoid using too many 2x4 bricks.... use 2/3 33deg slopes ! and also you can see the support to stop the crane toppling over as its joined to baseplates resting on an upper surface Layout 1 Picture 7 Hopes.. To build a small desiel shunter like the Hornby one I had as a kid, I think much like an 08 .. will be ideal if done right with the XL PF motor in it.. Cab to have minifig in, rest is filled with motor etc..
