I remember getting this set when I was little and adding it to my other islanders sets, but I had like three King Kahuka's. Great review!

I think a Napoleonic theme would have been so cool, but at least we got the soldier's faction in the pirate's theme. I also think it's interesting that there were no shakos in this prototype.

I think the new smaller sets are on par with the old smaller sets, but Soldier's Fort and Brickbeard's Bounty are pretty bad compared to Eldorado Fortress and Black Seas Barracuda. I never noticed how similar the 1989 and 2009 lines were. It's really awesome seeing them side by side.
