Fun build! The transparent pieces above the colored ones gives a great effect!
Suggestions for taking pictures in the dark will sort of depend on what kind of camera you are using, but here are some basics that I use...
*Use a tripod (if you aren't already). Even a cheap one will help, and use the self timer function on the camera. This reduces shake.
*Does your camera have the ability to adjust the ISO, if so set it to 100 to get rid of the noise.
*another option if your camera allows you to change shutter speed is to use dim lighting and a very fast shutter speed to make the picture dark (you're limiting the amount of light getting to the sensor). This will reduce shake and noise.
*I'd also recommend setting the white balance to "incandescent" if you can to get rid of the red tint (or adjust the color balance in something like GIMP/photoshop).
