  1. Thanks :) I plan to build it with real bricks as soon as I reach the final version which is probably 2.0, 3.0 tops. Unfortunately I won't be able to build this in real life for at least a few moths, because, well, I don't have the money yet to buy the parts, but in a few months I probably will. The other issue why I'm putting off the real life versions is the listed reasons above, where the model still needs some improvement, plus I forgot to list the fact, that I probably still need to work a bit on the piers' connection to the central base. See, the majority of the model's weight is in the pier's and I'm always a bit afraid that when I try to pick it up in real life the pressure will be to much on the bricks connecting the individual piers to the triangular base and it will break apart. So I'm actually still changing some connectors to longer plates/bricks with overlapping connections for better weight distribution.
  2. Thanks a lot guys, I'm really glad you like this
  3. Thanks a lot :) The reason the whole thing got this big because I wanted to get the general outlines of the piers right and I couldn't do that on a smaller scale (if you take a closer look you'll see that I used 1x3, 1x4 angled bricks to get the shape).
  4. I'm glad you like it :). As far as I know it's not a turbine, since Atlantis isn't supposed to have any other power sources other than the ZPM, the naquadah generators the expedition team brought along or the usage of the lightning in the half season double episode in season 1. What I was trying to recreate is a narrow (in the scale of the city itself) path on the middle of the pier with water on both sides (reference at the end of the comment). I'll probably try to replace it with maybe simple 1xn plates, as this was kind of a knee jerk reaction in that little path :D .Plus as I just realized it today, the pier isn't supposed to be hollow, but only have a large "hole" for water to flow in. The underside is solid. What led me to believe it was hollow was the fact, that all piers have water containing pools, rather large ones on these piers. The other thing was the not 100% clear CGI of the stardrive engines (seen on the reference pic of the original post). The CGI paints the active engines in shades of blue, which in my opinion are rather similar, to water effects, so I wrongly assumed, that these piers would be hollow. This is one of the things I intend to fix in the next version. IF I'M right this will look really awesome in brick, I really hope I'll be able to build it IRL in a few months. The reference for the pier as I promised
  5. I just figured out if I simply embed the flickr image's BBCode it will appear as a picture in the post, at least it did in the preview, so I'll do that. Once again, thanks for the help :) It worked fine with the BBCode, and thanks for all the help, here's the topic posted if you're interested.
  6. I built this model about six months ago and it took me about three days to build this using LDD. Back then I wasn't really interested in sharing it, but since I just joined the forum I decided to post it here for everybody to see and to see if anybody likes it. During the build I didn't use any advanced techniques because I don't know any (or maybe I do I just don't know it). The whole model started out as a little experiment with hinge plates as I was playing around with different angles. Then i decided to build a small scale test model of the city (somewhere between midi and mini scale) just to see if the basics design elements of the city would work. Then as the hours passed the model became considerably larger as I wanted to get more details right thus eventually reaching the current size. At the moment it has 2340 pieces and by my count the whole thing is 60.8 cm x 54.4 cm (give or take about 2 cm-s). The weight is unknown, that one one will only be clear after I can build this in real life (which won't be soon). Right now I list this as a v1.0 because it still need some work. The work it still needs by my count: -the bottom needs some plating work especially in the middle -implementation of the city's stardrive on the bottom -and maybe some retouching of the buildings. The first two a pretty self explanatory (if you know the show or seen a picture of the city from below if not then here's a picture of it) the buildings might require some explanation. I did the buildings last, after the base structure was done. There are a lot repetition in the buildings (especially in the small ones at the end of piers, those were made by the cloning of some templates I made on the first pier I've done, although I used different patterns for each pier) and that I want to change up a little bit, mostly in the city central. Another thing I might change a bit about the buildings is the large amount of yellow trans pieces. They are supposed to represent turned on lights all over the city after sundown and I thinks they look good, but I also think I may have used a bit too much, so I'll definitely look into it. As soon as I'm done with the revisions and I deem it to be a final version I will try to build it and when that happens I will post it here along with the updates on the general design. After all my text, here are some pictures and the rest can be seen on my flickr here. The overall look of the model from an upward angle. The same from downward. View of the city from above. And under. A close up of the two pier types I used and the city central from above. A close up of the middle of the city and the central tower. Close up of pier type 1. Close up from pier type 2. As I said there a a few other pictures on my flickr about the city (I took 14 total to start with). I really hope you guys are going to like this and hope you have some thoughts to share on the model.
  7. I was trying to link this for exmple, I thought it would work with the simple flickr link, but it doesn't so I think I'll grab it from the html/bbc code and thanks for the help guys, I'll report back if it works.
  8. Hi, I just registered yesterday and now I'm trying to post a new topic in sci-fi about my MOC. I used the insert image tool to link to my flickr where I uploaded the pictures of it (originally in png format, because I made them with LDD's built-in photo tool). When I try to upload the topic I get an erro saying "You are not allowed to use that image extension on this board.". By my count, I already had the 5 posts required to be able to post links (there is one in my topic), so that shouldn't be the problem. Might it be the original png format? My other (lesser) problem is that I can't watch other people's profiles. When I try I get this message: "[#10245] You are not permitted to view member profiles.". Is this another restriction for new members I don't know about or is this something else? Thanks in advance for any help.
  9. It looks really good and it's good to see that someone restores a classic set. Keep up the good work :)
  10. Looks really great. I love hove the tall walls make the whole thing much bigger on the shots.
  11. Great job. I think it's pretty damn impressive especially on this scale.
  12. I really do enjoy the forum. There are a lot of great stuff here and even more amazing MOCs.
  13. I don't know if anybody else noticed this, but I was trying to make a picture in LDD with built in tool. After I set the background and took the picture I checked it and there was no background on the picture. After trying a few more setting in the "preferences" menu, I figured out what caused the problem: I checked "high-quality rendering of bricks placed in the scene" and "advanced shading" was on max. If these two weren't used, the background appeared on the final image.
  14. Hello everybody, I just joined the forum. I've known about it's existence for a couple of years now, but I never bothered to register until now. Why you may ask? Maybe I wanted to share my MOCs, or wanted to join a conversation, or I was bored or maybe I just wanted to use the search function. Anyway, I ended up registering and now I'm writing my intro post. About myself: I'm 23, I'm a Hungarian native and this isn't my real name (shocker huh?) I just generally use the name above on the internet for personal reasons (yes, I do hate my real name). My main areas of interests are Marvel comics, movies, TV shows and of course LEGO. I had three sets when I was a kid, but when puberty hit I generally lost interest and I even gave away my sets (something I regret to this day). Then about two, two-and-a-half years ago my interest sparked again, but I wasn't in a financial situation where I could afford to buy new ones. This led me to try LDD in which I build mostly official sets, mostly Star Wars (often UCS-s). But then earlier this spring my situation changed and now I can afford sets (not nearly as much as I would like, but for that I blame my insatiable hunger for LEGO). Right now this is my collection: (sorry for the miss of a clickable link, but since this is my first post, the forum wouldn't let me post URLs) http://brickset.com/search/?OwnedBy=Lantaar. If you take a look at it you'll see that I have mostly Star Wars and Marvel Superheroes sets. Star Wars because it's frickin' Star Wars, I don't think I need to tell more. Marvel Superheroes, because as I mentioned it above, I'm a Marvel fan. Other than these themes I generally like anything futuristic/space/sci-fi related with some medieval/pirates. The only theme I don't really like is City. It just simply bores me. Other than official sets I also built some MOCs in LDD, but nothing I feel is good enough for sharing except for one (which I'll post as soon as I can get flickr working) which is a rather large model of Atlantis from Stargate Atlantis (more on that when I get flick to work). So that's about me, hope someone will read my lengthy description and finds it at leas a tiny bit interesting. Jay Logan a.k.a. Lantaar
