Very impressive town, I like it a lot.

What book are you reading right now?

the good things that TLC have done!
msavageesq replied to hollisbrick's topic in General LEGO Discussion
The Lego I grew up with was awesome, late 70s and 80s - as a child it gave you the opportunity to let your imagination run wild and create the world as you wanted it to be. It tested you and challenged you, where other toys often served things up ready-made for you. As a townie fan, seeing the return to that kind of stuff again (gradually) alongside all the other licensed themes etc. is wonderful, particularly as I watch my kids pursue it as enthusiastically as I did/do. Particular things that stand out? I suppose creator and the factory facility from the current line. The compromise between out and out 'reality' Playmobil style stuff and the old Lego quirks of single-person vehicles is a nice direction that offers the best of both worlds. -
That's a very good MOC indeed, it inspires me onwards in my efforts to build a decent fleet of vessels. The Divers theme must have completely escaped my notice, I guess in the time I was 'away' from Lego. I particularly like the living quarters. Until a grey hull is produced though, my warship will have to wait. Well done.

Seems like TLC are not taking too kindly to images of new sets being placed online, if this thread and the Agent's one are anything to go by.

Awesome, absolutely awesome. Well done. Not usually into the Pirate's line, but that's an inspiring ship. Mark.

Thanks for that tip, I've got it to work! I appreciate your help. By the way, looking at your location - my wife went to Wisconsin once, on a school exchange from Germany - 1995 perhaps? She speaks very highly of it.....

Excellent MOC - my eldest got this for Christmas, but we find it difficult to play with as it dwarfs the town and the roads. I might just have to secretly MOC it while he's at school, or if I can get enough parts, turn one into two with the spare trailer :-) Brickmaster: Can I ask, do you have a technique for getting two side-by-side in a 6-wide vehicle. I have made two fire appliances as 6 wide scale, but cannot satisfactorily position two minifigs next to each other, without one being 'loose'. This is using normal doors, (i.e. small red, with fire signs on), rather than the non-doors as featured on Heavy-hauler or more recent set. Thanks.

I'm working on a city/town with my sons, that is suitable to give me MOCing opportunities and satisfaction of a realistic sort of town, whilst retaining easy playability for the children to enjoy Lego, both in terms of 'whooshing' it around, but also learning to build with it and express themselves. This is not necessarily as easy as it seems, but it is great fun. Current builds: 1. Our harbour/marina/lifeboat house section and a conversion of set 6482 (got off of eBay and not best pleased with) into a decent heavy lift helicopter. 2. More residential properties to give the extensive civil defence authorities something to do :-)

I always thought the difference was that a ship can carry a boat, but a boat can't carry a ship? This doesn't completely hold water though, as the HMS Nottingham (a ship by anyone's estimation) got brought back to the UK after a disagreement with some rocks off of Lord Howe Island, on the deck of a larger ship. Did that make it a boat?!? :-o As another point, the Royal Navy always refer to submarines as boats, not ships.

No one answer applies really. At the moment, I mostly buy sets I particularly want as they will add to the town project we're building in some fashion. Amongst kits the kids receive, unless they're really dire, I try to encourage them to build them and keep them intact, whilst making sure I continually pick up a selection of different bricks and parts for them to be creative with their own designs and ideas. I also get plenty of stuff off of Bricklink to use on my MOCs. At the moment, there are so many kits I want that I am working my way through the list. Eventually I hope to be at the point where I can buy multiples of some kits, in order to build the alternate versions for variety. So, in summary - build them, play with them I suppose.

Great review, thank you. I have this on order for my youngest's birthday next month as our first venture into Creator. Looking towards the Town House thereafter, and then perhaps Town Plan or the Town House.

Thanks all for the welcome. It really is a great resource, I have picked up a lot already. When we get a bit further with the town, I'll post some pictures. I think the 6 wide vehicles are a good compromise. 8 wide is a bit big for the stuff we have already, (as I say mostly left over from my youth), but 6 just fits and is more realistic. I've built a couple of fire engines in 6 wide and managed (just) to cram four crew into one of them, which again adds to realism. Hope to be able to contribute more to the forum as time passes.

welcome, from another newbie...

Hi all, I've been perusing this forum for some time and have made one post, before discovering this intro section, so Hi from the UK. I'm mostly interested in town and city lego and contemplating getting into trains. At the moment I'm schooling my children in the arts of Lego and trying to integrate my existing collection, left over from childhood, with the new 'larger' scales, such as the town house and the 6 or 8 wide vehicles. Regards, Mark.

Hi, I'm new to this excellent forum, but not new to Lego. This thread has been great, reading through people's very good and often original ideas. Alas I have few to offer myself, other than to second the ideas above about a coastguard/lifeboat theme (mostly because my sons are lifeboat obsessed) and also the winter sports theme, which would be amazing (we are currently making our own one, we have Santa & his sleigh, a snow-mobile and a skier, but alas would not photograph them as few of our buildings are ever colour-coded. I'm just expanding the collection again as my children grow into Lego.... For myself, I would like to see a return to the small 'pocket-money' sets, such as I remember from my youth. If we could afford these in my childhood, I'm sure they would be affordable now and spread the Lego message and market. I suppose the only downside was, I used to frequently end up with two or more of each. Sets I am thinking about include Four wheel drive Medical car Tyre change and a personal favourite, which to the present day is the closest I've come to owning a convertible: Convertible I am aware that things like the current doctor's car are out there, but in the UK these can be quite difficult to source. Infact, I wanted to buy a police car and doctors car for my sons a month or so back as a reward for their good behaviour. Neither Toys R Us or Woolworths had them. Makes me sad to see how little Lego is available in the shops these days compared to my youth...... (cue chat about 'the old days' etc.....) Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all on here.
