  1. Battery box + receiver + 8886 cable = no 9v tracks, though I'm not sure why you wouldn't just use a pf motor given they cost half as much as 9V. M.
  2. Oh that would be great! But something I would have to do long term if I go that far. Now I just have to source another ir receiver as I'm supposed to be building a train with the one I have now... oops :-P
  3. Thanks freak, that's exactly what I needed. My track will be simple for now but I may be able to borrow stops and switches from another lug member if needed. I do have both styles of power cable too. The rc idea is great, I might have to do that, it'd be nice to have some speed control too and maybe hook in the pf leds. Matt
  4. Thanks... i think i will need a little luck ;) And sorry to be a nag guys, but the point of this thread was simply to confirm what parts I need to make the train - 1 motor, 2 bases, 2 bogeys right? As far as I can tell there's no other "special" parts required, just build your own train from there. And obviously the track - but that side of it is simpler. If anyone can just confirm my thoughts on the parts needed, that would be great. Matt
  5. My Lord, I submit to you my latest creation ..... the never ending plains of Avalonia! Ok, so maybe not, it might just be me showing off my new display frame.... but.... there will be an Avalonian creation to fill it.... it'll be BIG! Matt
  6. Some great tips, thanks! For starters I'm just going to build a basic oval, using ramps instead of straight to make it more interesting/cheaper. It'll be integrated into some kind of town display so supports will be built from the buildings it's running through. Won't be any points/tricky bits for a while though. Main concern at the moment is just ensuring I'm ordering the right parts - the 3 listed in the op - to make the monorail train itself. Matt
  7. Ah of course, 90 is what my brain was thinking, but its not what my fingers typed :-P
  8. Hi all, Just planning on a small monorail loop to go into some displays :) I have nothing at the moment, just planning what I need! For the train itself, it looks as though the monorail specific parts needed are: motor x1 base x2 Bogey x2 And I have several of the 9V monorail battery boxes already from other builds. Plus track etc - and on that note can someone confirm that the corners are 45 degree bend per long corner peice? The stock pics on BL look like they won't be - but the inventories suggest that they are (4 corners to an oval track). Cheers :) And ... really shocked how relatively cheap the monorail parts are (except long straights) compared to what even a used monorail set will sell for. Matt
  9. Revenge on Nocturnus! Like I said - there would be repercussions for their raids on my forestmen. Revenge On Nocturnus by Matt_Henry_Aus, on Flickr More in the thread Mat
  10. As some of you may have seen, I had some issues with raiding Nocturnans.... well, good old Sir William had something to say about that Revenge On Nocturnus by Matt_Henry_Aus, on Flickr Revenge On Nocturnus by Matt_Henry_Aus, on Flickr Revenge On Nocturnus by Matt_Henry_Aus, on Flickr For Avalonia! 11. I think just some general organisation of titles/tasks etc would be good at the moment. I notice a few people haven't been added to the guild membership either *cough* me *cough* :P What would be good is a) tasks/titles available b) requirements for task/title c) list of people partaking in said tasks or holding titles, and whether this also precludes others attempting the same At the moment, I've read through about half the thread... and all of the above is absolutely clear as mud Matt
  12. Thanks all for the comments. The watchtower received a delivery of new guild flags today - we'll rebuild and hopefully the fear of messing with Avalonia will keep them away in future. I'm quite sure my mistake in the past was not flying the colours. Expect an update over the next couple of days! Matt
  13. Enter Sir Willy! William De Bleys - LEGO Avalonian Forestmen Leader by Matt_Henry_Aus, on Flickr William De Bleys is the leader of the local band of forestmen. Being a light moving force a horse is simply a hindrance - so he got himself one of those fancy griffin things ;) William De Bleys - LEGO Avalonian Forestmen Leader by Matt_Henry_Aus, on Flickr His unique saddle is rigged to carry the all important bugle - a trademark of any high ranking forestman and is also flying the forestmen colours (yes yes, still waiting for BL to send me a sand green :P) but in general William prefers to travel light. For Avalonia! And down with those scummy Nocturnans and their watchpost burnings :( Matt
  14. Oh there will be repentance - of that you can be sure! It is funny... she was hiding in the LEGO room all sneaky and quiet, it's like when a toddler isn't making any noise you know there is trouble brewing. Thanks :) And yes, a forestmen tower is never going to be overly complex. I have some ideas in mind for more significant structures (I won't spoil it yet) but again, not massively complex stuff in the end compared to some of the more traditional castle builds. Matt
  15. Yeah I did low railing on my last moc too, doesn't bother me too much :) They are dangerous men, so who really worries about occupational health and safety ;) And Taz - cheers I missed that... will have a dig around the lego tubs and put up new pics with the flags. Matt Edit - will be updated with flags in about a week, had to order some....
  16. Heh thanks ;) Yeah I really like the crazy amount of foliage, but it takes an obscene amount of parts. Every bricklink order we do at the moment we're ordering extra parts for the trees - mostly use the tree leaves, 3 leaf plant and bamboo, with some naked flower stalks for texture.
  17. There be wild men in them there trees!! Strolling down a nice forest path, you check your belt to make sure your tidy little sack of coin is there and all of a sudden you hear a horn and the whistle of arrows and crossbow bolts!! What, wait??? where did they come from!! LEGO Forestmen Watch Tower by Matt_Henry_Aus, on Flickr Check the grass... they aren't all in the trees ;) LEGO Forestmen Watch Tower by Matt_Henry_Aus, on Flickr Captain of the watch with his trusty horn - somewhat of a veteran and has obviously seen better days. LEGO Forestmen Watch Tower by Matt_Henry_Aus, on Flickr More photos in the flickr gallery And questions/comments please post :) Cheers, Matt
  18. Avalonia for me - well it's really the only place forestmen fit, isn't it ;) Also going to enter into some personal competition... as my wife has signed up for Nocturnus
  19. Space is an issue regardless of what kind of setup you use. A small lego loop can be almost the size of a dining table or at the other extreme as big as you like (big is easier done with PF trains). The one serious space advantage is that at the end of the weekend you can pack your track into a tub, put the trains on the shelf and that's it. If you get into model trains then you've still got a massive slab of display to store. As i mentioned before, our LUG typically only displays at train meets and you see all the model train guys turn up in their specially built enclosed trailers that can hold a few sections of layout without damage - it's all a big ordeal. We have one member who brings a trailer (standard, nothing special) which carries all the tables and also the stands for the kids to view from, and everyone pretty much just brings their section of the display in boxes
  20. First wooden dumpster I've ever seen :P but.... now that you've said it... it's hard not to look at it that way hehehe Matt
  21. That sounds like it'd be great! You'll have to post up when you're done so we can all have a look. And thanks everyone for the positive comments :) Matt
  22. That's not a bad idea! Not tonight - just spent too much time cutting up boxes from all our lego online orders :P But will fix it tomorrow. And I'm pretty sure they did have similar sets back when the forestmen were current, but not exactly the same either. Matt
  23. Another quick-MOC from me tonight :) Silly Santa had a bit too much sherry and slipped off the roof! Careful Santa! by Matt_Henry_Aus, on Flickr Careful Santa! by Matt_Henry_Aus, on Flickr And no, there's no snow, it's summer down here y'hear???! Matt (posted in town because i don't really know where it fits.... but it has a bit of a house at least )
  24. Just a really basic build that I'd had sitting in the back of my head for the last couple of weeks :) We had some forestmen turn up from ebay yesterday and that just tipped me over the edge into actually building something! Sat down this afternoon and half an hour later I had this :) Lego Forestmen by Matt_Henry_Aus, on Flickr Lego Forestmen by Matt_Henry_Aus, on Flickr Lego Forestmen by Matt_Henry_Aus, on Flickr Enjoy! Matt
  25. Definitely lego :) Especially if it's for fun - not for show. Our local LUG generally displays at model train shows for the lack of actual lego/scale model shows in our area - though we do make sure there is a strong train presence. It started off with the model train guys being all grumpy at us because it's not a "real" model train, and i think secretly because we drew bigger crowds than them ;) More recently we have been getting more and more of the model train guys coming over and asking about how it all works etc and I think they are starting to take us pretty seriously now. Probably the advent of EN/Maersk/modular sets etc which we have running/on display gives it some more adult appeal too. Matt
