That did it! Thanks very much. That will be a useful technique for me going forward. For the chain example, I found that I also had to copy the constituent parts (the official chain link and chain end parts) into the unofficial parts folder as well, which surprised me. From my other reading on the topic, I thought LDCad would find the needed (sub) parts if they were in any library folder. Maybe I'm still doing something a bit wrong? Here's the folder structure I have: LDraw Parts chain end chain link Unofficial Custom Parts my new custom chain part chain end chain link But the main thing is that it's working as I need it to. Thanks again for your help.

Thanks Roland. Both of those options (I'd been using the drag and drop one for a while and I'm happy to learn how to add templates) solve the convenience problem, but I'm also trying to get the part to show as only one part in the part count of the LDR. Do you have any suggestions for that use case? Thanks as usual for your responsiveness!

I've been using LDCad for several months after switching from Studio, and I love it! So much power there. Thanks @roland! I'm trying to find a way to save an assembly of parts, for example all of the components of a minifig torso or a chain curving just the right way, as a .dat file so I can use it as a single part. I've played around with detaching content and renaming an LDR as .dat (the syntax looks very similar), but I haven't quite got it working. Before diving into the deep end of the pool with LDPE, I'm wondering if there's some trick to doing this in LDCad. Thanks, cj

Thanks! I've had the little wind-up version since 1977 when I was little kid. I was so enamored with the LEGO version that I ordered chromed bricks to match it as closely as possible to its ancestor. Then came the tracked version, because my kid loves anything with tracks. Soon it will be an army . . .

I've been lurking around Eurobricks for a few months, getting a bit of advice here and there from this great resource. I live in France, just across the border from Geneva. A bit over a year ago, when my kid was two, I started gathering a some used bricks from colleagues whose kids were outgrowing them. Then I started trying to organize them, just a little, to see what I had. And then I discovered Rebrickable and LDraw and Studio and LDCad and LPub . . . And so, a year later, I have a wall of little labeled drawers of well-sorted Lego, an inventory on Rebrickable, and a dozen MOCs posted there, some of which I designed for my kid, some of which are really just for me. I seem to most enjoy functional Lego, like the key organizer I built, or the Lego Idea maze set for which I have built a couple of mazes. GBC seems to be a whole other world whose siren call I can hear . . . And as the little one gets older, I think the light at the end of the tunnel is most definitely an oncoming Lego train.

For some reason, the site won't let me sent private messages, but I did manage to track down Polegon's email and he does still have some printed instructions for sale (5 euro). They really are an excellent piece of work, with a lot of thought put into how to map out different configurations of the modules. Thanks @Holodoc and @Hamster for trying to help!

Does anyone know if the instructions are available somewhere for purchase or otherwise? Polegon's BrickLink store closed in 2011.
