  1. This also happened with the EV3: a similar home and education kit with the same hub/smart brick got released close to each other. It makes sense as it can be quite expensive to develop the brick and firmware. And why not re-use what you did for education in the home market? My main issue is the simplification the new mindstorms set has gone through. It seems to be more focused on the 10-18y age group and not so much at the AFOL community. I'm considering my options: what will 350€ buy me Lego wise: the new mindstorms set, the Liebherr digger, or... Let's see when the first review videos come out, only then I'll be able to decide if the new mindstorms set is worth the money.
  2. Cool! At first I thought they were box pictures, but now it looks more like pages in a brochure. Can anyone provide translations of the texts?
  3. I also noticed the remote control symbol on the box. Since no physical remote is shown I guess they mean via smartphone and not a Bluetooth remote, unfortunately.
  4. That could very well be the reason, but if it's an internal irreplaceable battery as suggested earlier in this thread, why would they change the color and need to have it tested again?
  5. Nice find! But although the tests are done a year later, the battery is exactly the same type as in the Spike Prime set.
  6. I feel as mindstorms is becoming more the home version of the education sets, with the same target group. It would be really nice if there would also be an AFOL mindstorms line with more advanced features. One upside is the compatibility between all the new motors (I like the control+ motors from the Liebherr better than the spike prime 'sideways' motors. It also seems that the micropython pybricks interface will be consistent between the new mindstorms, control+ hub, powered up hub, and even the ev3 hub.
  7. Somehow it hurts my eyes, but it might be the colors and layout used for the Chinese market... Only benefits I see so far are smaller hub en slightly smaller motors, as well as the battery pack. Looking forward to more details...
  8. Oh wow, thanks a lot! This is great documentation to find, I couldn't find it on the official Lego website and thus didn't know of it's existence. For me it also shows that the 2020 mindstorms kit will be also supported through pybricks. Finally a python library that works on all recent mindstorms kits. Looking forward to more powered up components such as the Bluetooth remote control...
  9. And about a week ago they released image v2.0 with new features/structure (for instance the brick is now a class instead of a package).
  10. I too find it unfortunate, but on the other hand I feel LEGO is moving towards 1 control system 'to rule them all'... Let's see if they manage to stick to this one for a while :)
  11. Hi all, I was trying to get bricknil to work with Lego's micropython image on the EV3, e.g. to control the EV3 using the bluetooth remote, and let the EV3 in turn control a train. However, I'm starting to fear bricknil isn't micropython compatible, is it? If not, any work-around ideas how to get communication between the EV3 and powered up elements working? I'm running v2 of the microPython image from LEGO. Cheers, Joos
  12. Good to know, spend plenty of time trying to figure out if it blocked somewhere.
  13. Today I build my first ever prototype MOD: an EV3-controlled Mack Anthem. It needs some finishing to properly hide the EV3 brick and IR receiver but I can't hide my enthusiasm any longer :) There is a small issue with the steering, where steering left works fine but when steering right the turn is far wider. Can't seem to figure out how to fix this, I made sure to firmly mount the motors and cogwheels which helped somewhat but not enough. I've posted some pics in this Flickr album, more to follow (on mobile now). Please let me know what you think, and what I could add or improve.
  14. Thanks, I already found those, very addictive to read :) It sure is sunny here ;)
  15. Hi all, I'm Joos, nickname GrandiJoos, from the Netherlands. I'm just coming out if my dark ages after finally buying the 31313 EV3 mindstorms set earlier this year. And a second hand 8043 RC excavator (Ultimate edition :) ) just last week. I'm mainly trying to automate stuff using the EV3 set. My recent attempt to motorize (and add sounds and lights to) my 1994 8880 supercar failed. I'm currently trying to EV3-ise my 8043 which seems to be easier. I'm 35, Dutch, male, father of 2 girls who luckily also like Lego, married (to a wife who does not really understand Lego but gives me showcase space in the living room), and data scientist for a profession. Hope to have some fun here sharing a common love, and joining a community.
  16. I know, that's why I assume/hope that the 51515 will also support this, hopefully upon release already.
  17. Indeed, although I'm looking forward to a new mindstorms set, I'm also curious. I hope the motors, and sensors, are smaller than the EV3, as well as the smart brick. Looking at the upcoming control+ elements I certainly hope they are compatible (and not Yet-Another-Elecrical-System). Furthermore, I also hope they add extra features not present in the EV3, although not really sure what that could be. Native Python support would be great, and actually feasible given the micro python release for EV3 by TLG. Finally, the Liebherr is a bit steep at 450€, I hope the 51515 will be a bit lower in price. So far for my ideal-world expectations ;) Can't wait for more details!
  18. Ohoh, if this is true I better start saving... Looking forward to further updates on this one!
