Thanks for your detailed reply. I struggle to understand why Bionicles are more popular than trains. Hopefully when I have enough spare Lego ill be able to copy some of the MOCs and also hopefully get creative myself.

Why isn't Lego so dedicated to Lego trains like they were back in the 80's when they sold electronic switches and signals etc? Obviously there are elaborate workarounds, but it just feels like they don't care anymore. Unless im mistaken Lego don't even sell straightforward boxes of straight or curved track. Obviously you can buy the track you need on eBay secondhand but the point is Lego don't bother producing what would obviously be popular, again giving the impression they don't care. Looking at the train accessory offerings on Lego.com is almost depressing. Sorry to be so negative. It's just that after returning back to Lego trains after 30 years I hoped to see some progression, but the minimal offerings look like a backwards step. Fingers crossed that they have some new and exciting offerings in the pipeline.

Hi. The only other space I have is floor space, but that'll require a layout that somehow wont interfere with the footfall in my home..... no easy task! The passing siding format was something I did consider but I wasn't sure if my loop, which only has 4 straight tracks on each side, was large enough. I believe 1 switch = 2 straight tracks in length. A guy I regularly follow on YouTube (Bananenbuurman) had an interesting solution to space issues in this old video

Ahhh ok cool. I don't have any switches yet, but ill go ahead and find some. They'll obviously be useful to have anyway. I see they sell a pair of switches on Amazon for £14.99, which also includes extra curves. Thank you

Hi Thank you for the suggestion. I remember seeing the brick crossing you mentioned, so that sounds a good idea, but in order to keep some space in the centre of the table ill try the siding. I do have some extra curved and straight track. I'm not really down with the lingo yet so please can I ask what a 2 stall siding is?

Hi 30 something years ago I was a lego mad child (see: Hello! my name is.... intro). I particularly loved Lego trains and so one day for Christmas my parents got me the 7725. Sadly money was tight at home so the 7725 was as far as it went when it came to trains, so I cherished that model until the day my parents mysteriously gave all my Lego to my cousin. Anyway, 30 something years later I decided to take a trip down memory lane a buy another Lego train. Obviously we're now talking infrared not 12v, but none the less I was thrilled to get it set up and running. I don't have any immediate plans to create the giant Lego train layout I never had as a child, although never say never For the time being I am happy to have a more interesting coffee table! Hh I do have one question though: Obviously this is an uninteresting oval layout, but while im stuck with the coffee table for the time being, is there anything I can do to expand on it? One thought I had was to put a switch-track on each side so the train could cut across, however im not even sure this oval layout is large enough to do that. Failing that I suppose I could at least use one switch-track that leads to some buffers. Cheers

Hi thekitchenscientist. I have yet to properly look into Mindstorms, but hopefully that will all change after I get over my reliving childhood Lego train memories. That said, I think I've seen the two combined on YouTube.

Hi all, my name is Shane. Lego played a big part in my childhood. My favourite models were the 8860 Technic Chassis and the 7725 Train. I also loved Space lego and....... hell I loved it all! I remember when I was around 10 years old, my best friend and I decided that when we were older we would live in a big house with a giant Lego city inside. Unfortunately though reality eventually set in, my Lego was handed down to my cousin, I became a teenager, and that was the end of that. Now 30 years later and I got the urge to get my hands on some Lego again. I don't know why, perhaps it's partly to relive some of my childhood memories. So far I've got myself a few small Creator vehicles, the bike Shop & Cafe and the brilliant High Speed train which is currently wizzing around my coffee table. If anyone asks ill just say it's for my nibblings to play with :) I don't currently have any spare bricks to build my own creations, but im sure that situation will soon change.
