Hmm, I have both the models. I also modded both the trucks. The 8285 was changed more intensively because I wanted to have it motorized. See my thread. 8285 MODed Recap : I made the truck RC, I motorized the functions and I made the tow arm all pneumatic. With this modification I like the tow truck more. It gives a bigger possibility of functions and it offers a way of towing your other creations. The tow truck has, also in it stock version, more functions to play with than the crane truck 8258. Also, it's tow arm can actually lift something.

I think we'll see a boat sooner as a plane. In Lego City we allready have seen a fully floating boat, so it is possible. Flight is way more difficult. The motors aren't strong enough and the batterypacks are to heavy .Maybe the PolyLith pack has enough power, but the motors haven't. EDIT The only thing possible in a way of flight is a Zeppelin or blimp as seen in Legoworld 2011. And then it is still not very easy to find helium everywhere.

[REVIEW] 8070 Supercar
Dutch_EE replied to Blakbird's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
After having a lucky break, I could buy the set for peanuts (50 €) I build the hotrod, but I wasn't happy. A hotrod needs to stand forward, as the back-wheels are often larger. That is why I changed the back-wheels to those of the 8448 supercar. Making the rear-fenders a bit larger was easy, and just used left over parts. Enjoy -
I think that a reason to change to 12-20, is that it doesn't give a nice ratio. It's a strength issue. When there is a nice ratio like 8:24 = 1:3, a bit of damage on a gear can give serious problems. This is because each tooth of gear 1 always meshes with the same teeth of gear 2. If 1 tooth of gear 1 is damaged, this means that the same teeth of gear 2 will get problems. If there is a ratio of 12:20, each tooth will mesh with different teeth on each revolution.

There is only one question. The names of the people that enter the models are the names of their VIP accounts. This means that it still could be the original model, published by their original builders, only under an other name. It is easy to check, just look at their sites or send them an e-mail regarding that model. But yes, this looks like copy-paste. I'd rather not apply at all than cheat

It looks like a beach buggy. -
There is a really easy way to solve the problem of both using the compressor and the power take of. Just replace the clutch gear of the Power Take Off in the gearbox that switches between compressor and PTO by a standard 16 gear. The power take of is then always on, but you can still select between the front, back or neither with the second knob (red). When the turntable is connected to the back PTO (which I think is the case) you can then use both the compressor and the turntable or winch at the same time. The compressor can then be switched on by the yellow handle.

PF Power
Dutch_EE replied to cavegod's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That sadly doesn't work because of 2 reasons 1. If you want more voltage you will be foiled by the voltage regulators in the receivers that get too hot at 18 Volt. Also, the motors are not made for such a high voltage. The thread at which the motors were tested went up to 12 Volts, but with this you'll loose all guaranties. 2. If you want more amps you will be foiled by the current limiters inside the receivers. They are set at around 800 mA, which isn't even enough to supply 2 XL-motors at full power (stalled) If you want to parallel 2 batteryboxes for more mAh (more capacaty), that is possible. You're limitations are in the receivers. -

No, if you want 2 functions that each use 2 XL-motors, you can use this system. Batterybox -> receiver -> 1 XL-motor on each output and dubble them up, so again the hole thing stated above. The 2 receivers are on the same channel and thus will operate from the same signal. You can easily have more than 4 receivers, there is just a limitation on 8 possible functions. -
REVIEW: 8053 Mobile Crane

Are these instructions somewhere to download ? Because I can't see the batterybox here. Or are those remotes not for that model ? -
Lego Hydraulics
Dutch_EE replied to grindinggears's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
But also I means that the small cylinder has to travel 4 time further ! That's the reason the power is equal. Pressure = Force / Area Energy = Pressure x Area x Travel = Force x Travel If you decrease the area of the piston by using a small cylinder, you can get away by using a smaller force if you travel 4 times longer, if you assume that the pressure inside the hydraulic system is constant. -

The hole issue of leaking cylinders is also known to me. I've got the old pneumatic digger 8459, with air tank. Every time I tell the system the retract a cylinder I lose (almost) all of my air from the air tank. The high pressure air just leaks out with a lot of hissing and the cilynder hardly retracks. Is there a way to repair such cylinders, or are they no longer usefull ? -

Shipping costs ? Those things would have to be moved from Denmark to Japan. -

I doubt it. Air can be compressed, fluids can't. With the compression, it can happen that the steeringcylinder might not move at all. -
Models for 2H of 2011
Dutch_EE replied to menad's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
One thing I still miss in the Technic trucks is opening doors. The last one was the tow truck from 2006. I know that they are closed for rigidity, but I think it's a missed 'playing' possibility. -
The reason for the second PTO is the turntable. As can be seen from the picture that includes the switches, the turntable can be controlled separately by the yellow switch, the 'standard' PTO is controlled by the red switch. Sadly, because the compressor is also controlled via the yellow switch, it isn't possible to work with the pneumatics in the crane and turn the crane at the same time
