Thanks for the welcome, I have started to sort out my lego collection from when I was younger. Unfortunately my sister cleared the loft out and threw away all the instructions however, I have found http://lego.brickinstructions.com/ very useful.
To help me find the parts I need, I used some old storage drawers I had in the loft to sort the lego into colours to make it easier to build the old sets:

This meant I was able to build my first old set, Fire Breathing Fortress 6082 from around 1993, the base plate is a little damaged but im not too fussed:
