In April I purchased the latest LEGO Technic F1 car, set 42000. Not long after purchasing this set a friend of mine also purchased this set, I ended up building the A model while he built the B model (race truck). Comparing these two models the F1 is clearly the much better set; the race truck feels a little “half done”.

I was recently looking online and undertook some research in to if anybody had designed or built a C model of this set, at that point nobody had so I decided to challenge myself to build my own C model based on this set. When I started thinking about what I wanted to build I had a few guidelines in mind:

- It uses ONLY the pieces from set 42000.

- It uses as many of these pieces as possible (At least 75%)

- It is scaled roughly to the same scale as set 8070

- Looks different to the A and B models of 42000. I didn't want to just make an improved version of either of these sets.

After spending an hour taking 42000 to pieces I had a couple of large containers full of pieces with which to build. I started with the front end where I built the steering scaled to that of set 8070. Next I built the rear drive and suspension system, this is based roughly on the system used in the A model of 42000. Next I built the bottom frame of the chassis which connected these two sections together. The next step was to add the V8 engine and built the frame to hold this. I then progressed to the main cabin where I added the seats and built the frame for the cabin, added the doors and steering wheel. After this I added the rear panels and opening cover. I then went back and added some more details, added some extra beams to strength the chassis and also built the opening bonnet.

In the end these were the features I added:

- Front mounted V8 engine connected to the rear drive wheels

- Hand of God steering via a knob inside the cabin

- Rear auto levelling suspension

- Opening rear cover via knob in cabin

- Opening bonnet (manual) with locking pin

- Opening doors

This was my first time trying to build my own C model and I really enjoyed the process, challenge and end result. Limiting myself to just the pieces from this set was quite a challenge and at times I had to go back and change the way I had done things or the pieces I had used due to needing those pieces for something else. I also tried to keep the colours as uniform as possible, this became more of an issue the closer I got to the end when I started to run out of some parts and some colours. I also had to go back and swap a couple of pieces in the front end; this meant rebuilding quite a bit of this.

In the end I used over 80% of the pieces of the original set and I am quite pleased with it. I resisted the urge to use any extra pieces from other sets and this meant changing how I built some parts of the car, this helped to make me try different things and in the process made me a better builder. I am planning on going back to this in a couple of weeks and see if I want to make any changes to it then. I spent about 20 hours over the past week working on this, now time for a break :)

Amazing job on a c-model! I have no idea where you people get the inspiration to just start building, when I try to build a c-model with a set I end up with an ugly lump of parts and more extra than I have used  That is just gorgeous, it even has panels and everything! Great job Paul_B!
