I have to say that I like the choice in colors. It really adds to the Asian look of the dragon.

Glancing at the MOC I get a Mayan vibe. Something about it doesn't stimulate the thought of Asian culture. (Aside from the presence of dragon myths.) Look at the pattern on the lime half-rounds for instance. To me they represent the Mayan Temples. The colors are very organic, (lots of greens, blues, and yellows) which are a contributing factor to its misguided cultural representation. Then again, I did just see a preview of Apacalypto, so that may have influenced my subconscious. :-P

Did artistic renditions of Asian Dragons ever escalate to this degree of colorful vibrancy?

I always thought so. But then again, I envision a lot of red, green, and black

I concur. That's almost exclusively how I envision historical Asian Culture. One would surmise that TLC agrees, based off of their latest oriental line. (AKA Orient Express) Heck, they aren't exactly renowned for historical accuracy either.

Hey,

Megan posts on Lugnet and Classic-Castle (and others?). Check out her gallery. She has a really great feel for using bright colors and unexpected parts to make fun MOCs. IIRC, her boyfriend (fiance? spouse?) is Mark Stafford, so between them they make one of the coolest MOCcing couples around.
