And secondly, take the second window on the cabin sides away. (The one wich is on the right in that picture)[...]

Captain Becker

I do agree with him on that matter. It looked good in the first version with the straight and than "crooked window", cause it makes the ilusion of a bigger sterncabin, the other way around, as it now, didn't work that well. I would still make the upper deck above the stern cabin two studs smaller (Keeping the Stern with the windows as they are now) and make larger curve with the "crooked windows". But that's quite a tricky build. I didn't master it to my liking, but maybe you find a way to do it :)

I would change the 2nd window (the straight one) into another gun port. I also would change the position of the Mizzen Mast (the one nearest to the stern). Move him two studs to the back (more aren't possible because of the steps.) It would be perfect, from my point of view, If you could change the position of mast and steps.

But in the end, all that matters is that you like your ship!

change the position as in swapping the positions? Because that would mean realigning the lower deck and the battery deck as well as there is a ladderway to the lower deck. But I could use a mast piece with a 2 studs x 2 studs base to position the mizzen mast a bit more astern.

I agree on the window and the curve. Both issues have been mercilessly dealt with And now there is a gunport more. Now I will get to narrowing down the poopdeck a bit more. Thank you both for your feedback!

Now, folks. Before I begin working on the sails and the rigging (just ordered loads of 2x2 round bricks for the new masts, the standard masts are just not suited for doin' an accurate heigth), there is one last chance to tell me to break the hull down and do it completely different. Here is the hull so far, exluding some minor corrections. I'd like to get some comments on the changes.

Nice, the poop deck is smaller now!!! Great, but you could add a skylight there... even if it's a fake one :pir_laugh2:

The additional gunport looks better than the window, but now I guess you should move the ladders one more gunport to the stern.. I would also use black gunports - so you got the Nelson checkers :) But that's just a personal thing!

The Swivels look real nice!!! :pir-wub: I like to see a closeup ...

I guess you'll work on the lanterns again, and the actual ones are just placeholders? Great progess so far!

Keep it up,she's gonna be a beauty!

Now thats a great looking ship! As Aalak said, the ladders could be moved forwards, and also take the black stairs at the back away totally, it just wont look good over there IMO. And mind you say whats that overhanging thing on the deck in the last picture? About the gunports, Dark red looks very good IMO so i say keep them as they are, the ship has already enough Black colour IMO, so it brings some nice detail in there.

Also where the ships "Hole" is, you could add two ladders over there in each side, and take some of those black plates away, just a few, so there is some space between them. Thats again some of my small tips. Waiting for the next update to say some more if needed. Keep it up.

thanks! I am workin' on a skylight right now and I already ordered 20 black flags :pir-sweet:

Ad yes, the lanterns are placeholders indeed. Still considering different options for them, though. I added some closeups of the swivel guns.

I had to bring me to do it but the stairs a gone now. There's a ladderway goin' down now. One question for both of you: By movin' the ladders did you mean the Jacob's ladder? The overhanging thing was just there in order to hold some threads while preparing the hammocks that you'll see now: hammock for the crew, an idea of my girlfriend who made these as a premature easter present. I love them!

I just received my mast-bricks and will start building the thing together now. A question for you rigging experts: How long would you make the bowsprit? The vessel's hull has a length approximately 60cm, about the same as the main mast will be.

I won't call myself a rigging expert, yet... but I would say, it depends one some questions. First: What kind of bricks do you want to use? How long are the masts? For example, the bowsprit of the Ares got a total length of 26 2x2 roundbricks + 2 snot technic-bricks with the X + 16 technic connectors, and that with 3 segemented masts. The hull-length of our ships could nearly be identical.

So, as a result I would start with the masts, since I think the length of the bowsprit really depends on the length of masts. If you got large masts, you need a larger bowsprit, in my point of view, otherwise it won't look elegant. If you'll use three mast segments, you'll eventually end in this area of length of the Ares. Maybe a bit shorter...

Hope I could be of help!

What a frustration that was... turned out that the package anounced by my girlfriend turned out to be something completely else. No mast pieces there, yet. So I did the interior during the last days. Here it is. I am also pleased to announce that the bow is finally finished. I used some old oranges-nets to build some anti-boarding nets that are retractable and I constructed a gooseneck for the spanker boom that I like alot because it actually does what it is supposed to do.

As you can see the ship is divided into three sections that can be easily put together.

Great looking ship already! But there is yet some space for improvment, the bow is looking a but clumay yet IMO: The headrails are looking a bit weird, i recommend you to watch some pictures from ship MOC`s and our member Perfectionist made index: Historical ships and figurheads index also. and the mastpieces on the bow (I forgot the offical name of it) should be a little bit upper and also the figurhead. Keep it up

Dear folks,

I had some nasty days with my masts and now I have the correct heights and positions and they are stable. There's still room for improvement, though. I will try to add tapered mast pieces the higher it gets. And then, then there will be the dreaded rigging!

Are these nets from garlic or small onions? Nice recycling!!!

As for the masts. First of all I like the improvement of the small details. And you are right. The different size of the masts are ok. but they definitly need some more work. First of all the colorscheme I like it and had something similar at the Ares first, but it's not accurate, the question is about what the yellow parts are. I mean black pieces could represent iron rings or things like that, and black color at both ends. The placment of the yards should be changed. Look at this picture for a accurate placing:

Aalak is right about the positioning of the yards, but a ship can also lower them.

So with lowered yards, your ship is already quite accurate, compared to this picture for example.

You could also change the colours like Aalak said, but if you don't have enough bricks or something I'd reccomend you to just remove the yellow bricks (make them entirely black).

And finally, this could be a good inspiration for improving the headrails.

Outside of these things your ship looks excellent so keep it up!

Is the red supposed to represent hanging pieces of meat or crabs or something? Good bit of detail below the deck  I really like that hammock design too. Dont think Ive seen a ship with working hammocks before. Id like to see a closer picture of that cannon in the foreground of your masts picture, looks like a good design as well, keep it up!

I can't decide whether the red pieces are supposed to be meat or lobsters. But they can be eaten, yes :pir-sweet:

Just a small update: I finished about half of the standing and running rigging of the foremast today. I am using three kinds of different threads. Their colour is brown in order to go along better with the LEGO-shrouds.

So, the rigging is almost done. The fabric for the sails is being dyed, I am waiting for the bricks for my cannons to arrive and That's the point where I start making action shots!

Hope you like them!

The HMS Centaur has called at St. Henrietta port to find out that a pirate schooner has been raiding the area and already made some plunderage. The captain takes Centaur out immediatly to hunt down the schooner.

When they find the pirates after a long night's search they manage to get into firing range.

A single broadside wrecks the enemy. While they are sinking, the dinghy is lowered into the sea to take some prisoners.

This is my 100-anniversary-post! So it seemed appropriate to use it for the same thing I started with: the HMS Centaur in the Class Pirates section :pir-grin:

I have done the layouts for the sails and attached them to the ship.

As you can see, I have used a sails plan that reflects stormy conditions so there are neither studding sails nor water sails and the royals are being partially shortened. There are no moonrakers, yet, but I am thinking about doin' some for the Centaur.

The course sails feature are of the same format as traditional topsails in order to enable the vessel to haul-close in stormy conditions.

As the jibs are only made out of paper, yet, there is no need to attach the tack to the bowsprite. This will be changed, of course, once the sails are ready.

At this point I'd like to thank all the folks that helped me coming that far, especially Aslak, Admiral Croissant and Captain Becker! It's always a pleasure to read your comments and they do help me alot while being respectful and friendly at the same time. It's great to be here, cheers to you guys!

I must say that the entire hull looks very good  I like all the details around there and the stern is nice as well.

But to be honest, I think the sails could use a little bit improvement. I've made another paint image to show it:

shiphms.png

So first of all the jibs. They can be made a bit smaller, and many 3 masted ships had 3 of them.

The other sails are a bit too square IMO, which gives it too much of a clipper look.

And as you can see here, the main sails get more narrow at the bottom, rather than wider.

Hope that helps a bit :pir-classic: I see you've got a good piece of cloth already. Good luck!

Ive never actually seen or read anything to suggest this is always the case, I think it is just exagerated in this photo due to the wind billowing the mainsail. The mainsail can be square, or rectangular I guess, and on more modern clipper ships could actually taper out. Of course I could be wrong, but this sail plan is quite useful in illustrating rigging, notice that the mainsail and foresail actually have different tapers:

constitution-2.jpg

Good progress though  The last 2 gunports towards the stern look a little funny to me, maybe the last gunport should be raised one more, or the second to last one lowered one to give it a smoother look. Just my opinion though :pir-classic:

You're totally right! They do get wider, but when they are sailing those sails always seem to get narrower.

To be honest, I also made them go a bit wider on the Vesta, but I 'pulled them narrower' with string.

So I think on model ships it looks better when they get narrower, or make them wider and make the effect of the wind with glue or ropes/string.

Thank you both for your comments! As I mentioned before, the main sails are gettin' wider for the purpose of being rigged for more stability in stormy conditions. The wind has more sail area nearer to the mass centre of the vessel. That makes the ship being more stable in terms of pitching while being on broad reach in relation to the wind direction.

But you are right about the jibs, I'll make them shorter. And there was a third jib, actually. It fell off during photographing, thank you for pointing it out

I love this ship. She's come a long way and my fondness has grown with her. What i particularly like about Centaur, is she isn't exactly the same as so many others, she got character. It's often over looked in modeling that every ship yard , especially across international borders, did things differently, so ships rarely looked quite alike, despite operating on the same principals. She also some how manages to give the air of an aged, experienced man-of-war, not a brand new ship fresh off the stocks. The comic was also pretty cool and added to that mystique of experience in action. Thanks for sharing her and keep up the good work.
