Hobbes Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 Boy, that is difficult... I'll refrain from my vote for a bit and ponder until I can decide. To start a discussion, I'll explain what I like/dislike about the five contestants' entries. Brickster's city, of course, sums up all the memories I have of growing up with LEGO as a kid. I like all the sets that are used and how they're set up. I especially like the town center with the yellow castle. The only thing missing is a train, but then there's a harbor, another sub-theme I like. The blue carpet adds to the harbor town feeling. A real classic beauty. Alex' town is a bit more "modern", and it has a train. What I like about it is the town center (within the track circle). It shows how you can set up something like it with just 4 road plates and a few houses. Well done. Compared to Bricker's town this one lives through the use of the green/dark gray road plates. It would be interesting to see how Bricker's town would look with them but the light gray plates add to the "classic charme". Jayb Fpmq's entry has that "city" feeling, compared to a "town" feeling of the previous two entries. Again it shows how you can use limited space and still make a great looking layout. The two highrises and the elevated train give it kind of a metropolitan look. Great bridge in the background with the "elevated highway". I'd consider this entry the only "city". Kotua's town at first looks kinda unfinished. But the airport in the background gives it an "island town/village" kinda look, it just lacks a few palm trees. Again the green road plates help it. It reminds me of the airport at Plaisance, Mauritius, the only "island airport" I know. Also, this layout uses the classic "scale" of LEGO towns (4wide cars), which I still favor. Salvo Brick shows us not an entire city or town but a part of it. I especially like the Esso gas station since it's something different for a change. Houses, and cars, too, are nice MOCs. Although the bank building and the blue one next to it look american it must be a european town since "Esso" is the european name for "Exxon" and "Media World" must be what "Media Markt" is in Austria/Germany (it's the same logo). I've never been too fond of the green/dark gray road plates so far, but the more I look at layouts using them, the more I get to like 'em... All that said, I still don't know which I like best... :-/ Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted June 26, 2006 Author Posted June 26, 2006 Well said Hobbes. Although it would have been nice to see a few more entries, my favorite came down to Jay's Metro City and SalvoBrick's town. I had a tough time deciding on which I like better. I love the trains and the skyscrapers in Jay's city. This is truly a city with a denser design and "metro" look. I really like the subway which adds to the overall look of a city. On the other hand, I find SalvoBrick's town very comforting. The buildings and the overall feel of the town reminds me of something out of an old European town, esp. with the Esso gas station. I also like the green/grey road plates which really add color. I see this town on a cover of a Lego idea book from the 80s. They are all very good, but my vote goes to SalvoBrick! Nicely done. Quote
SuvieD Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 That is some of the hardest voting for a contest I have ever done. I was never much into town but these are great. There is so much variety and so many interesting details in each that it is hard to decide. I ended up going with Salvo though as if I had to pick one to take home with me it would be this. Others had more peices or a better retro feel but this had the color, detail and style that most appealed to me. Though the yellow castle in Bricksters city sure is tempting but so are those tasty skyscrappers. Quote
UltraPrime Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 I chose Salvo because it has a 'community' feel to it, you know - the sort of place where everyone knows your name :-) All of them are impressive for different reasons, butthis one hit me in the right place. Quote
xwingyoda Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 I really thank Hobbes for his great analysis of the contestants' entries ;-) I still am unsure so I will wait a bit before voting !! All these cities have a different feel to theme, and all are really interesting, so I will not precipitate my vote !! Anyhow I wish luck to you guys !! *yoda* Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted June 28, 2006 Author Posted June 28, 2006 Last call for votes. Get your vote in now. So far, SalvoBrick's traditional hometown is leading the way. An excellent choice I may add. Jay's outstanding metropolis is 2nd followed by a nice train town by Alex. My classic city has one vote and Kotua's island-style airport town is at the gate. I'll announce the winner tomorrow evening (6/28/06). Good luck to all the contenstants and thank you for sharing an image or your city/town. They're all very nice. Quote
Hobbes Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 Alright, I voted for Alex. The overall "look & feel" and that he has a train was it for me. Still, I like all of them. I know, that's the standard tacky "excuse", but as a town/train fan there's almost no layout that doesn't look interesting in some way ;-) Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted June 29, 2006 Author Posted June 29, 2006 And the winner is: SalvoBrick for his classic-style hometown! Salvo wins a VIRTUAL TROPHY for his design and build of a traditional Lego town. :-D *y* And to ALL the contestants: as Hobbes has indicated, all the cities/towns are great builds with layouts that make each interesting. A very nice job to all of you. Disclaimer: Eurobricks is not responsible for claims or awards promised by TheBrickster. X-D Quote
alex54 Posted June 29, 2006 Posted June 29, 2006 I'm not the winner! :'-( No, it is not a problem for me! Congratulation to the winner ;-) , and thanks for the people who has voted for me! I think this kind of contest is a good idea to see the creation of the other eurobrikers and the diversity that just few bricks can bring with some imagination. I will let you know when my "new" town will be ready in my brickshelf gallery... Quote
xwingyoda Posted June 29, 2006 Posted June 29, 2006 G I didn't even vote !! Brickster, could you leave the vote longer next time, especially that its not a real contest ;-) Many tks hehe EDIT: I casted my vote for Kotua anyhow ;-) His city is the simplest but reminds me of mine as a kid, so I voted for pure nostalgia !! *yoda* Quote
