Ayrow Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 I posted some quick photos of this in my earlier thread, but thought I'd create an official thread for this. Many thanks to Jay Hurst for the inspiration on this. It's not exact, but there are obviously a lot of similarities. His creations are outstanding and certainly inspirational. I've posted a few photos here, but you can see all the photos at this LINK Enjoy, -Tod Quote
Treadwah Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Utterly stunning, and so imposing against the Emerald Night. Quote
L@go Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Utterly stunning, and so imposing against the Emerald Night. My thoughts exactly. I looked at the first picture, and thought, "wow, that looks big". Then I looked at the second picture, and laughed out loud with amazement. It's a b s o l u t e l y HUGE. And I thought the EN was big. Awe-inspiring! Quote

Picking it up and moving it is a nightmarish chore. Funny thing is, it's completely "to scale". I've stood next to the actual engine in Omaha, Nebraska and that minifigure almost perfectly represents the experience in actual size. It is a humbling experience, no doubt. The diesel counterpart is equally as monstrous and humbling. (I am considering that as my next model). Thanks again. Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 First, let me say welcome to EB and to Train Tech Ayrow (although an introduction in the Train Tech registry is always appreciated). I just stumbled upon this Big Boy and must say that it's a beauty. I especially like the images pictured next to the Emerald and the Super Chief, and it really shows how big this Big Boy really is. I think I'd like to front-page this very nice locomotive. Great job! Quote
lightningtiger Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 AWESOME and BEAUTIFUL at the same time, and it is very big ! Congrats on being front paged 'Ayrow' and keep up the excellent train building.........Brick On 'Ayrow' ! Quote
Nightshroud99 Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Wow! I'm not a collector of Lego trains but I must say, THAT IS IMPRESSIVE! Quote
CarrollFilms Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 outstanding job on detail and design, the whole thing is magnificent, great job! Quote
meyerc13 Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Excellent job! I've visited 4017 at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay many times and can attest to how absolutely monstrous these are. Every railroad fan should visit one at some point, because pictures do not do them justice. Quote
BillytheKid Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Looks very good. Now is the emerald already impressive, but you made the big boy awesome impressive. Have you also pic's when your big boy takes curves? That's the real challenge of legotrains. Quote
Derfel Cadarn Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Wow, great build! Looks awesome and imposing with great detail. Looks like it would really struggle to take curves however. But even as a stationary train in a yard, that's still a great model to have on your layout. Nice work! Quote
Ayrow Posted January 6, 2011 Author Posted January 6, 2011 (edited) Looks very good. Now is the emerald already impressive, but you made the big boy awesome impressive. Have you also pic's when your big boy takes curves? That's the real challenge of legotrains. When I get the nerve to pull it off of the shelf again, I will take some photos of it navigating curves (which it does pretty well). :-) Edited January 6, 2011 by Ayrow Quote
buddy Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Outstanding MOC! The size of it is very impressive as is how accurate and realistic it is. Extremely well done. ~buddy~ Quote
Admiral Croissant Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Beautiful! Definitely worth the frontpage Amazingly realistic and detailed. I especially like the part in the front, looks very complex. And I like the size Quote
Seany Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Extremely impressive, I've always been a fan of the Big Boy Locomotive, and the scale of it against the Emerald Night is quite something, my EN should be arriving in the next day or so, but I'll secretly be thinking as I build it how miniscule it looks compared to your big boy. joelego Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 I love the engine looks great are you missing the grey plate on the second set of drivers?? I also bought the instructions on bricklink for the tender and he threw in the engine pdf I didn't finish mine and it looks like you added a couple of detaials to yours that were not in the directions I hope you are going to give the original designer some cred for this set Quote
SuperChris Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 This puts the Emerald Night to shame. Absolutely amazing! Quote
Gioppa Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 no world...wow!! I MOD my EN in a 4-8-4 and was great form me,but your creation is really impressive!!! Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Very beautiful and well build model! I do think the wheels are too small though, it might benefit from some Big Ben XL wheels. Quote
locoworks Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 can this turn ? 2nd that question, is it powered and can it make the curves?? i would very much doubt it can make the curves, in fact i doubt the tender alone would? but an awesome model all the same. lots of hours in there aswell i bet. Quote
LEGO Guy Bri Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 Awesome Big Boy! Perfect recreation of 1940's American steam power! I've always wondered how the E. Night would compare in size. I need to aquire one of these. Quote
Veeb0rg Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 This thing is amazing looking. I'm just starting back into this, I wouldn't even know where to begin building something as detailed as this. Quote
Teddy Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 This is a very well build locomotive and a good rendition of Jay Hurst his design! I am too very curious how it is powered and how it behaves in switch points in particular. Kind regards, Teddy Quote
