[KEY TOPIC] Official Lego sets made in LDraw

Recommended Posts

And also not on the picture

Yes, sorry for the typo I corrected it. The part is in LDraw...to be honest, I just didn't get it shaped for the build (I was only building the set to be able to mod it for another build). I will update it when I get the hose done correctly.

4558 Metroliner (also 10001) [Trains/9V]

4558-1.jpg

Model with stickers as custom bricks (needs below download)

Stickers for 4558 (unofficial)

Errors:

- no electricity wires for motor are placed

- 973px63 "Minifig Torso with Red Scarf and Train Jacket Pattern" does not yet exist in LDraw - replaced with 973px84

- train wheels do not fit on the tracks as it turns (because it is easier to straighten it for straight tracks by just rotating in MLCad - there are too few tracks included in this set anyways..)

Notes:

- I will try to post stickers on ldraw.org for parts update.

- There is also a Model B which is not included here.

Thanks everyone for all the models and also welcome to the new contributors :classic::thumbup:

I had actually already finished these quite a while ago, not long after I posted the A model, as training with LDCad, learning to do custom parts (the rubber bands were okay, but the rope was really cumbersome because I wanted to approximate the model in the instructions so bad, including the knots they made ). However, the importer I was using to import the models in Blender for rendering couldn't handle the .mpd files with custom parts. But a couple of days ago, a new importer came out, that does have the capabilities of dealing with these kind of models. I used these models to test it out, so that's a double win :classic:.

 When I scrolled through your models, I was like " *huh* he made the knots!?".

Nice work!

EDIT: I also fixed your weird rubber bands. Temporarily download here.

I downloaded your fix, uploaded it to my brickshelf and updated my post. Thanks a lot for fixing it, legolijntje, because I fiddled quite a bit with it!

And yes, the knots where "fun" to do. But it was very good practice, and looks great in the final render as well :classic: .

No problem! It was a few seconds of work really

You've probably seen the handles/levers with a red dot and a green dot in LDcad when working with flexible parts.

Well, they (simply said) control the curvature of the part in that spot, for how long they follow their own path before following the path of the next control point.

I've minimized the two at the 'bottom' of the rubber band, forcing them to almost immediately follow the next control point.

What happened in your model was that the first control point tried to follow its route, but too far (past the next control point). So, the rubber hand had to 'turn around' to follow the next control point.

Well, that's maybe a weird explanation.

In any case, don't forget the green and red dots when working with flexible parts in LDcad, or alternatively go in the properties of a control point (press the box with the XYZ coordinates) and set the "previous control point" and "next control point".

General tip for LDcad; I hope you've turned on part snapping

And personally I find SPN (spin) mode easier to work with than TBL (trackball) mode, it's more like LDD.

10174 UCS Imperial AT-ST [star Wars]

I am glad to present the 10174 UCS AT-ST. … and I can tell you: For me this was a tough nut to crack!

Especially connecting the side parts of the drivers cap to the main model made me kind of desperate: It was necessary to fine adjust several angles successively in small steps by trial and error so as to get a best fit. After each step I had to check the result by visual means. Although I had not been able to avoid some small collisions I am finally satisfied with the result.

General remark: the colors where hard to distinguish in the instruction manual, especially between chrome silver and light bluish grey. I checked with reference photo's, and made sure each model didn't use more of the pieces than there are in the set, but I can't guarantee everything is exactly as it should be with regard to colors!

_____________________

There are those sets you regret not having. Just like everyone, I regret not having the UCS Falcon or the Emerald Night of course, but I don't know if many people remember this set I've craved for ever since it came out. The side models are all great and all, and you can do fun things with them as you can see in the renders. But the Titan himself is just stunning in every way to me. It's very posable, but just in it's static form it already looks so cool! So yeah, I had a blast finally building these models, even though it's only digital. And the fun thing about this is that I get to practice my render skills as well: I got a little experimental with the lights this time, and I think it gives this nice, cold look to the robots.

General remark: apart from the first model, I didn't have official instructions, since these aren't available any more since a couple of years. I did however, work with the official .lxf files for as far as they still are compatible (some techniques are now considered illegal by LDD). In combination with that, I used generated instructions available on brickshelf. They aren't always logical or correct, but close enough, and better than the ones generated by LDD, so the steps in my models follow these instructions closely.

There are 30 models to this set, but I figured it would be less boring to me and easier to track for other users, if I build and post them in batches of five. I don't know if I will manage to do all of the models (I'm still having tons of fun!), but I'm certainly planning to feed my love for trains by recreating the models of this unique gem of a set.

10030 UCS Star Destroyer [star Wars]

28492714291_d005176cb5_c.jpg

Download MPD-File (OMR compliant)

Done with LDCad 1.5.

Dat file for Display Sticker generated with Sticker Generator by R.Melkert and imported into the mpd file as unofficial part via MPDCenter.

To show sticker in LDCad place the sticker image file alongside the model file.

The structure of the mpd file follows the instructions. So we have 135 submodels and around 600 steps.

Errors: hopefully none

20 more models to go! Luckily I'm still enjoying the variety of models and the unique techniques in all of them. I am getting a bit tired of building endless variations of the bogies, but it's still fun, and everything is going very smoothly in the render department now that I have my setup.

So, I'm back from vacation but you guys certainly weren't doing nothing :classic::tongue:

[...]

(This is my first one, so it's small...hopefully I've built and uploaded everything OK...let me know if not!)

Nice to see new people contributing. Welcome! :classic:

Your model looks fine at first sight, but I'm not sure the colors are correct. It's difficult for me to make sure, because there's no inventory available anywhere and the image is just a box-art. But, after looking at

(and based on 'experience' with Lego's color usage), I think (pretty sure) you need these fixes:
  • First and foremost, dark gray should be dark bluish gray (also known as DBG and has LDraw #72) and light gray should be light bluish gray (LBG, LDraw #71). That's for all models since I believe somewhere around 2003.
  • Secondly, your Light Yellow bricks should be Tan (LDraw #19).
  • Lastly, the bricks you actually made Tan should be Dark Tan (#28).

Aside from that, it looks like you've got some slight misalignment atthe light gray pin on the end of the cannon. Not really a big problem, it's difficult as hell to place parts correctly in MLCad.

If you're interested in making more models, I'd really recommend LDCad. It has a modern, fast 3d interface and it has automatic brick snapping (so bricks snap into place, like in LDD).

If you have anymore questions (regarding the model, LDraw, LDCad etc.) feel free to ask or make a topic here in the subforum. :classic:
