[KEY TOPIC] Official LEGO Sets made in LDD

Recommended Posts

Since there are old sets still be adding to this thread, I thought I'd add one of my favourites.

5510 Off-road 4x4

Model Team

5510_off-road_4x4.png

LXF file

Notes:

- The black 1x2 Technic brick (3700) that holds the steering in place created a collision error with the windscreen, so has been placed behind the model.

- The three light grey Technic 1x8 plates with toothed ends (4442) required for the steering have been replaced with 1x8 plates.

- The two light grey steering arms (4261) required for the steering have been replaced with light grey Technic 1x1 bricks.

- The light grey Fabuland shovel (x120a) has been replaced with a minifig-scale shovel.

- No stickers and no string for the winch.

I love your brickbuilt Rex and Hamm! They look great!

Very good work! Rex is fantastic! I was going to propose you an "Hamm" like this, but I see you arrange very well by yourself!

Thanks very much, guys. I just wanted to try and make Hamm as round as possible, although I'm still not overly happy with him, but had to decide between making him small or making him detailed. I'm quite pleased with how Rex turned out, though. Thank goodness for those 1x1 round plates with holes!

Just built 8056 Monster Crab Clash from the Atlantis theme!

8056_monster_crab_clash.png

LXF File

Sole error is that many decorations are unavailable. Parts that should have those decorations have been left blank.

EDIT: And here's 8058 Guardian of the Deep from the Atlantis theme:

8058_guardian_of_the_deep.png

LXF File

Errors:

  • Because piece 45590 cannot be flexed, the lower jaw cannot be attached to the rest of the model. It has been left to the side.
  • Many decorations are unavailable. Parts that should have those decorations have been left blank.

My brother noticed a very egregious error with the index: the set 3829 Fire Nation Ship is for some reason listed under the Town/City theme. It is actually a licensed set from the Avatar: The Last Airbender theme. On a more semantic note, Exo-Force should be hyphenated rather than compounded into one word. And 5971 Gold Heist is misspelled as "Gold Heistu". But the error my brother noticed is the only one that really impacts the index negatively.

Anyway, recently I decided to look at what City sets had not been built, and I was able to complete two from the Construction line.

Here's the larger of the two I've built: 7633 Construction Site from the City theme.

7633_construction_site_6.png

LXF File

I have it here all in one file, but it's really hard to work with in that way, so I'm keeping the download links and images for the individual sections.

Part 1: Excavator

Image

LXF File

Errors:

  • The treads cannot be flexed into place and have been left to the side of the model.
  • Stickers were not available as decorations. Any parts that should be decorated with stickers have been left blank.

Part 2: Flatbed Truck

Image

LXF File

Errors:

  • There is a render error with part 4735 that prevents objects in the clip from being aligned properly. While the dome pieces (58176) could have been attached, they would have been misaligned and I thought it better to simply remove them from the model. They have been left to the side.
  • Stickers were not available as decorations. Any parts that should be decorated with stickers have been left blank.

Part 3: Lift

Image

LXF File

Errors:

  • For the lift to connect to the tower, the tires (50951) must be slightly compressed-- something LDD does not allow. The lift has been left to the side of the model.
  • The 16-module supports (2637) cannot connect the tower and its base without being put in slight compression. LDD will not allow this. They are instead connected only to the base.
  • Stickers were not available as decorations. Any parts that should be decorated with stickers have been left blank.

Part 4: Building

Image

LXF File

Error:

  • Stickers were not available as decorations. Any parts that should be decorated with stickers have been left blank.

Part 5: Crane Truck

Image

LXF File

Errors:

  • String obviously cannot be used properly on LDD, and even if it did, there is not a string piece listed of appropriate length for this set. The string has been left out of the model.
  • Stickers were not available as decorations. Any parts that should be decorated with stickers have been left blank.

Overall, while many parts of this set are ingenious, some don't work on LDD as directed. Regarding the lift, I doubt its errors can ever be amended. But in the meantime, it was a fun build. I'll be back later with set 7631 Dump Truck (the other set I completed) in a separate post.

If possible you should group the whole set in a single lxf file, and show a single image for the whole set, in order to make it more recognizable. :classic:

If possible you should group the whole set in a single lxf file, and show a single image for the whole set, in order to make it more recognizable. :classic:

I tried that when I was originally building it, but it became hard to arrange it so that the stuff was close enough together to keep the image small, but spread-out enough that you could see all the different parts. I might try again now that everything's built, but I'm not too keen on it since the instructions never "recommend" any particular arrangement and it could become very awkward with the many parts that are missing pieces or entire sections.

Also, Zeya, I'm a bit curious about your set "6066 Camouflaged Outpost". You used a lot of modern-day colors in place of the older versions, which doesn't make sense now that Universe mode allows for pretty much any color besides some obscure glitter, metallic, and chrome colors. For instance, you could easily recolor the goblets from 297 Warm Gold to 24 Yellow, the light gray parts from 194 Medium Stone Grey to 2 Grey (old light grey), the dark gray parts from 199 Dark Stone Grey to 27 Dark Grey (old dark grey), and the brown parts from 192 Reddish Brown to 25 Earth Orange (old brown). With these changes, the set could overall be made a lot more authentic.

When I'm not sure about how arrange different parts in a set, I usually try to reproduce the image on the box.

The "preview image" goal is to provide a fast recognition of the set (don't mind every piece is shown perfectly) and the single lxf file is useful for user who wants to download the whole set with one click!

However that don't prevent you to provide extra images (as text links) and lxf files of the single elements of the set as additional download.

The color names on Bricklink don't match the color names in LDD, so I just kind of eyeball it. I had no idea what color the old gray would be, so I used the default light gray on the main color chart in LDD. And there are so many browns, I don't know which is which. How do you determine which colors to use when you make a set?

As for the goblets, I couldn't find the exact part number in LDD, so I used a different part number, and yellow didn't exist as a valid color for that replacement, so I just left it as its gold color. With things like that, I'm not sure if we're shooting to keep it close to the original set, or leaning more towards trying to make the set buyable. I guess now that I think about it, it's kind of pointless to make it buyable since there are so many errors anyway.

Any advice you want to give would be great. I'm more than happy to make another pass and correct some of these issues. (I'll be busy until week after next, however.) I'm just a little confused on the whole color thing in general.

P.S. My 6071 Forestmens Crossing will have similar color issues, and I'll make sure to fix it also once it's clear to me how to determine which colors to use.

You can use Peeron color chart as reference!

Beside issues as "Nonexistant color used on existing brick part" suggests that you don't know about Lego Universe Mode.

In LU-Mode, if a colour is available, then it is available for all existing bricks!

Funnily enough, I'd done 6066 Camouflaged Outpost myself a while ago, but hadn't got around to posting it. The only difference mine has is that there's no printing where it should be, and the old-style hinges have been replaced with the new style. All colours should be present and correct.

Ah thanks. I guess the two important columns are BLName and LEGOName. This will help me so much. And I have been using Universe mode. I just wanted to document all cases of unpurchasable bricks and why, but I'm thinking I'll just stop that and focus on making the model as true to original as possible.

Ah I looked but didn't see it in the index. Oh well.

I'll go back and correct the 3 models I've done so far to have proper colors. That'll happen week after next due to holiday events. Thanks for your patience everyone.

I can't download the file. Is it a problem of mine or other users can confirm it?

If you want to use buyable bricks only, you should use Design by Me mode. But it is surely too limited to create official sets, that are much more rich of pieces.

About old models, remember to report here the update (inserting links to updated topics), so every interested users can download the new version! :classic:

Part 2: Flatbed Truck

There is a render error with part 4735 that prevents objects in the clip from being aligned properly. While the dome pieces (58176) could have been attached, they would have been misaligned and I thought it better to simply remove them from the model. They have been left to the side.

Part 3: Lift

For the lift to connect to the tower, the tires (50951) must be slightly compressed-- something LDD does not allow. The lift has been left to the side of the model.

The 16-module supports (2637) cannot connect the tower and its base without being put in slight compression. LDD will not allow this. They are instead connected only to the base.

Always a pleasure to read your error reports

Regarding not placing the 58176 dome pieces, I'm not sure why you didn't. In my mind the slight misalignment isn't that big of a problem, or?

You are right about the compression of the tires in the tower model. I agree it won't be easy to fix. I suppose one solution would be to temporaily disable/reduce collision volumes for this particular connection. I wonder if this "rubber compression" can be done in MLCad?

The module supports 2637 seem to show yet again that TLG designers can break the rules as it suits them, since this is not a "perfect" triangle.

Well, if anyone cares, the end is nigh!

TLG also released two post-ROTJ-era sets: the 7663 TIE Crawler..

Wow... you bring off a gargantuan work!

but... could be the TIE Crawler is 7664 instead than 7663?

You should rightfully be proud. That's one beeeep of a task you set out to do seven months ago.

So, what's next? Any ideas?

1) Modified torso and headgear for the chef

Why modified headgear for the chef? The chef's hat is available on LDD- it's part 3898 MINI BAKER'S HAT, and appears in the minifig parts category.

Admittedly, the headgear you chose for him looks pretty cute and feels appropriate for a less fancy sort of chef selling... barbecue drumsticks... on the street... for some reason.

EDIT: Also, his drumstick should be dark orange, not reddish brown.
