[KEY TOPIC] Official LEGO Sets made in LDD

That is awesome, and I can't help but notice you have the upgraded graphics. What are your computer stats?

I just used LDD 4.0 with Windows Vista and the highest shading/quality possible

I also really like the shading of the other sides:

Needed to make some small adjustments, like on the top of the cockpit and the hinged-wings, but set 10215 turned out pretty nice:

-snip-

How did you get the wings to connect? I'm putting the last couple bricks in place on this very model and can't get them to connect for the life of me.

EDIT: Here it is! :classic:

10215 Jedi Starfighter - Theme: Starwars

10215.png

Download the LXF!

Only two build errors to report here, one being that the wings won't connect. I'm assuming the the physical model takes advantage of some slight bending leeway with it's wings (Or it could just be LDD's collision detection is a little choppy with it here). The other error is that with the inverted slope at the rear of the cockpit, the Transparent Brown windshield piece will not go into place.

None of your images are working, because for some reason you've got some random numbers in the front (between the http:// and the www). Could you fix that problem in your posts?

I believe it's working now. I honesty don't know the source of the problem. I'm using brickshelf, and I just copy the image location (by right-clicking the photo, select Properties, and copy the Image Location and paste it on the post). Am I doing it correctly?

5580 Highway Rig

Download LXF!

How do you get flexible parts to connect to the model at both ends? I've been trying to do so with some chains on the Castle Giant Chess Set and can't get it to work for the life of me! Same goes for the vine in Flying Ninja Fortress.

Whenever I try, flexible parts never recognize possible connections. Perhaps that tubing piece is just a lot more convenient than the chain or vine, but I'd like to get those problems dealt with as soon as possible.

Here's what I did.

Do not build the wings seperately and then click them to the body. That won't work.

You need to build the wings attached to the body, which is quite tough.

Then make some small adjustments that allow the wings to tilt.

1. Replace a red 2x2 flat slope with two red 1x2 plates:

http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee236/hellomrzebra/LDDScreenShot11.png

2. Replace two lime tiles 2x2 with 1x2 and 1x1 tiles so they won't touch the lime slopes beneath:

Hi Merman.

Clever solution, but (and now I sound like a boring twit), it's quite important in this topic to keep to the orginal model as much as possible. Otherwise someone trying to mod and then re-build the set from the LXF-files, will get confused if the model won't build as intended.

I hope I don't discourage you from making more models.

I too tried to get the wings on to from Daedalus304's model, but I can't even figure out where the problem is. Anyone else want to try to solve the mystery and pinpoint the problem.

I see what you are trying to say, but without these three minor adjustments there is:

- no way you are able to place the cockpit

- no way to have the wings tilted. If the wings stay perpendicular to the body you are not able to put on the top few plates and tiles of each wing, therefore changing the look of the model drastically

LDD has some issues with hinged parts. It is impossible to recreate some hinged effects what would be possible in real life build.

I think I stayed pretty close to the original asking a few sacrifices...

I think it should be OK to deviate from the instructions slightly; many models here do so. What you definitely should do no matter how loyal you are to the official build, though, is make a detailed record of any and every change you made, and include that record in your original post.

In my case, I'm obsessive about accuracy. I will rather leave a set incomplete than make the slightest variation from the official model. If I include replacement parts for unavailable parts, I try to make sure they are in a garish, obvious, and usually non-existent color, and I usually include them only as reminders that there are parts missing.

If I had built this set, I'd probably have left the wings detached until whatever bug was causing the problem had been fixed. Other builders like yourself prefer if the model gives a realistic impression of the completed set, even if that requires shortcuts and improvisations. I'm pretty sure, though, that as long as you make a detailed record of your changes in your original post, Calabar will still be willing to include it in the index.

I totally agree with merman. He kept it as close as possible, while still maintaining the look of the model. He posted his lxf file and even his solution. We all know LDD has limitations. This isn't like leaving off a brick or two because they wouldn't fit right, he'd have had to leave the entire wings off. That would have looked ridiculous and would have been a pointless build.

Well, what we normally do then is to just leave the wings and cockpit to the side and make a remark. Once a brick is fixed in the future, it's easy to go back to the model and just snap on the wings and cockpit. If you have done a lot of custom work, it's more difficult to know what was original and not. So it's basically a matter of keeping the topic "true to the original". But let's also hear what Calabar, our Index chief says :classic:

...Or just leave the wings to the side, as I would have done. It would have looked ridiculous, but my habits come from my experience with actual sets-- if I use pieces other than the ones the set intends in ways other than it intends them, then those parts will be missing from my collection the next time I want to use them. And if I use a replacement part and forget about it, I might never know what I used or never remember to replace it with the intended part when I come across it. But as I said in my last post, different builders have different styles, and I'm pretty sure Calabar understands that.

Don't let Superkalle scare you off. He means well. =)

(candid image of Superkalle surfing Eurobricks...)

I wish I could get the enhanced imagery on my computer. It really looks nice in your screen shots.

Edit: hmm, maybe it's Calabar who's secretly Sheldon in real life.

But now you've gotten the wrath of Calabar upon you - better remove that image

Even if LDD4 looks better than LDD3 did, I should probably point out that those pictures were captured at about twice that size and then resized which makes them look a bit smoother than they do in LDD4.

Great job on those Tore. And welcome to the LDD Forum here on EB. :classic:

Here is another one, slightly bigger this time. Getting those chains more or less right was quite tedious. Only the original model so far, I might do the alternative versions later.

4997 Transport Ferry (main model) - Theme: Creator - LXF file

Some minor errors:

Edit: Tan Technic Axle Pins color corrected from Bright Brick Yellow to Brick Yellow.

I built 8297, the Off-Roader. I made a lot of changes, mostly with the gears (wouldn't get them all meshing), didn't put it the differential because it's not in LDD, no pole reverser either. Some panels don't exist in LDD so I used similar ones. Suspension system is very different as pieces don't exist in LDD. Didn't put the hook and line in there because the string in LDD4 is flexible. Engine is completely different because 1) the crank shaft end pieces in LDD have different holes than in the real pieces, and 2) LDD didn't include the cylinder blocks (even though all other motor parts are in there).

I still think it's looks pretty cool.
